Networking :: How To Resolve Packet Loss - Users Are Unable To Login To The Workstation
Apr 29, 2010I have linux workstation. All users home directories are NFS mounts.
Since I am facing packet loss issue users are unable to login to the workstation.
I found the packet loss using mtr from workstation to filer.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Power On After Latest Upgrade Installed / Resolve This?
Apr 4, 2011I'm running 10.10LTS at present, I upgraded via the Upgrade Manager last night, Firefox 3.4 and D-bus stuff if I remember correctly. The system then gave the "restart now or later" buttons and I hit the "now" one. My system, an AMD 3800+ dual core job in an MSI mobo then shut down and, er... died. hitting the momentory action power switch gives an ocasional short noise but I have no power/fans or anything. It's a 480 Watt PSU with green leds and stuff I don't really need but the price was good, so I'm not convinced that it's dead... yet.
Is it possible for an upgrade to stuff the power-up circuitry? Maybe power management?
My next step is to swap the PSU to eliminate this as the "faulty" item. It leaves the Mobo, screwed CMOS and possibly the switch cabling/connector but it's all a bit suspicious. I'm basicially a hardware guy so that's the path I'm following. Unless the upgrade's written to somewhere it shouldn't?
I haven't had time to investigate further as I was dragged away shouting and screaming to a prior engagement by "she who must be obeyed".

Apr 2, 2010Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.
Debian :: Sync Equivalent Or Other Options When Loss Of Power?
Jan 24, 2011I'm wondering what my alternatives are when I lose power to the external hard drive where I have Debian installed. I realize that the best answer may be a battery backup UPS for the external hard drive. It seems that I recall that when a similar scenario happened on my SunOS Sparc workstation, I would simply hit [Stop-A] and then type in the "sync" command. I now have a laptop and am running Debian off of an external harddrive that has its own power supply. When I lose power, my laptop obviously continues to keep running but my session is essentially and understandably hosed because the main filesystem is not accessible. Gnome desktop goes away and I am thrown to the main console login. When power resumes, I cannot login to attempt a remount or anything. When I hit [ctrl-alt-del] thinking that that is less forceful than just holding down the main power on the laptop, I get cannot execute "/sbin/shutdown". Is there a [STOP-A] sync equilavent or some way or keyboard sequence to get to GRUB to issue a reboot command?

May 31, 2011After a power outage my external hard drive that I use to serve a DLNA server with content lost all the files.
The parent directories are still displayed, but there is nothing inside them, and I cannot write anything into them. (creating any file in them does not work.)
I assume that I have a corrupted drive but I was hoping to find a way to recover the content. Most of it is backed up, but I have become a bit lazy in the past month, and have not backed up so there are a number of videos I don't want to lose.
It seams odd that the directories show up, but the files don't. The drive properties also show that the correct amount of the drive space is taken up (for the videos to be present) so I haven't reformatted because I assume that will wipe out all traces of the data.
Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Restart Fails After Power Loss?
Oct 25, 2010I have observed a problem twice now with Apache trying to restart but hanging somewhere in the process. This happens after a power failure; the machine comes back just fine, but not the web server. The machine is on a UPS, but occasionally it runs out of "juice" before someone can get to it (we have a generator for emergencies). When this happens, a ps indicates about three processes running that are trying to start Apache, but they just sit there - this time for three days since the power failure was on a Friday. I can fix this by killing those processes and doing an Apache restart - but that takes human intervention, which is not acceptable.
I suspect this may have to do with SSL, since when I do a manual restart it asks me for the SSL password. There must be some way around this so the system can recover on its own. This system's web site runs under SSL since it maintains medical information that must by law be protected. But it also could be life-threatening to someone if the system can't come back and as a result a person can't get help.
So I would appreciate some guidance as to what I could change that would allow for system recovery without intervention. I'm happy to provide any configuration file info, if you tell me where to look.
Server :: Frequent Broken Pipes From SSH Connection After Power Loss?
Apr 19, 2011I have three machines networked to my desktop which run a bunch of simulations in parallel. As they're running, I connect to them via SSH and screen to keep an eye on the runs and look at the output. They stay usually connected for days at a time. The SSH servers and client are running Fedora 14. Yesterday one of my coworkers accidentally yanked the plug on one of the servers while it was running. When I powered it up again, I started getting some odd connection problems. I couldn't connect to it via SSH initially because I got the Remote Host Identification Changed (RSA host key changed) error. I deleted the key in .ssh/known_hosts, which allowed me to connect, but it denied my password. I then logged into that machine locally, restarted sshd, and removed .ssh/known_hosts again. Now I can log in via SSH without problems. However, the connection dies with a "Write failed: Broken pipe" error every few minutes (as opposed to the other two machines, which stay connected indefinitely).
So my questions are:
1.) why would a power loss affect the behavior of the SSH server?
2.) why do I keep getting broken pipes now?
Fedora :: F11 Can't Boot After Kernel Update / Resolve This?
Jul 14, 2009I just updated my kernel to kernel-2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 on my x64 system, after I reboot my machine, the Fedora loading bar comes up and finishes but then no gui comes up. I attempt to issue commands at the hanging prompt that comes up but nothing happens. I can boot into my older kernel just fine but not the updated one.
What can I do?

Aug 23, 2009I have recently updated my Fedora 11 installation which replaced my older 167 kernel with the newer 217 kernel. However, the 217 kernel will not boot completely. It will show the splash loading screen, and then will switch to a rapidly blinking cursor. This cursor blinks for about 5 seconds and then disappears. I can access terminals using ALT+F2, etc. I can log in to these terminals, but init commands do not complete (something about a binary handler). I'm not sure if something is conflicting with an update to X or what is wrong. The most recent kernel that I managed to get to work was Kernel 167, however I cannot find this kernel for download.

Jan 24, 2010I have installed Fedora 10 on VmWare. I created another user besides root. I am able to login to that user using GNome login and i can switch to root using "su" command and perform the additional tasks.
Now, for one lab assignment, i need to login as root using GUI. But whenever i am trying to do, I am unable to do that. Is there some additional things that i have to do to login as root from GUI?
Ubuntu Installation :: Power Fail During Upgrade / Resolve This?
May 3, 2010The other evening I was in the lengthy process of upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to version 10.04. It had downloaded all the packages and was in the process of upgrading when a thunderstorm blew in. The power failed momentarily. The system crashed and the installation did not complete.
The system is dual boot to Windows XP. From GRUB when I try to boot Ubuntu the display goes dark, after a few seconds of the white Ubuntu logo. If I hit ENTER I get a flashing Cursor. I can boot to System Restore and get the Recovery Menu. I don't know if there is something I can do from there to repair/finish my upgrade, or even revert to version 9, when I could restart the upgrade.
Can I burn a Live CD for version 10.04 and finish the upgrade? This would salvage the settings, printer drivers, and other programs that I have installed. If I have to make a brand new installation I have to rebuild all of the things I spent many hours getting setup.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Loss Of Sound After Update?
Jan 26, 2010I just installed 9.10 Karmic Koala and everything was kosher. I installed Amarok and the libxine plugins etc and was getting sound and able to play my mp3s, I let the update manager run and voila now without any sound. Machine is a gateway desktop using Realtek High Definition Audio.

Jan 21, 2010I am trying to install Fedora12 on a usb hard-drive, the first problem I encountered was that the hard-drive would not boot stating "kernel panic: unable to create root device", this is just using the standard fedora 12 install and mostly clicking next (although I add my vista to the grub and tell grub to install to /dev/sdc which is the location of my usb hdd).
I have also tried livecdtousb (wont boot in stick and wont recognize removable hd as removable)
I have tried setting up disc encryption and installing with no LVM.
The drive has this same problem with ubuntu 9.10 however ubuntu 8.10 installs perfectly and I am guessing earlier versions of fedora will too. The problem is that I would like the kernel features of Fedora 12 (mainly modesetting) without this issue.
I have played about with grub and quite like disabling LVM and using the uuid of the drive to select the root partition, my boot partition has 500mb, I have a 2gb swap space 50gb ext4 root partition & 27gb fat32 partition code...

Oct 15, 2010Not sure this right place for this. After updating from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 lost internet connection - was instantaneous loss. Wired connection computer to router. Icon on computer shows "wired connection 'auto Eth0'active" The router shows line connected ok. Computer shows connection is established. Connection information menu shows details such as IP address broadcast address and other details. Where do I go from here to reconnect to internet.

May 2, 2010Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.
Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.
Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).
Ubuntu :: WIFI And Sound Loss After Kernel Update In Hardy
Jun 9, 2010I have a Hardy which last night asked for updates that included kernel changes. Today I find I no longer can connect using WIFI and have no sound. The GUIs are just not there and it's as if the controllers themselves have disappeared. For example lshw -C network reveals a Cisco Airon Wireless, but it's not listed as a wireless device, just as network controller.Can anyone advice me on how to approach this? Is it possible to revert changes or something?

Aug 23, 2010I am running Linux Mint Isadora 9 and recently installed a wireless USB adapter. After installing RT3070 drivers for my RT2070 card I got everything working and life was good. Now, all of the sudden I am having a world of problems connecting to the internet. I can connect to my AP fine, but I cannot access the internet. If I attempt to ping my AP by IP address I get severe packet loss. I cannot ping my AP by url [URL] at all so Im guessing there are some DNS issues as well.

Feb 21, 2010i made a video and i wanted to put it on my myspace(video upload) and it justs fade to grey and becomes unresponive. that it goes back to normal but no progress. so then i tried going to image shack and uploading a picture. can't do that either. tried mediafire, videos, vimeo, nothing.
so i tried on my desktop(desktop running 9.10 32 bit. laptop(the first one i tried) running 9.10 64 bit. it didn't work on that either. i know it's not my isp because it works on my ps3(no ubuntu). not my firewall and tried without without my router. didn't work either. i tried upgrading flash on both of them and on my desktop i can upload some pictures to imageshack now. nothing else though. i have tried using both firefox and opera.
i pinged yahoo and this is what i got:

Fedora :: Unable To Update F15?
Jul 5, 2011I have been running Fedora 15 for a about an month and a week ago I started to get messages on two machines to say it could not update. I am using the "software update" package. I am using Fedora 15 64 bit. Installed from a DVD originally on one machine and the other was updated from Fedora 14. Each machine is on a different network. I start the "software Upates" package. it gets the list of packages to be updated and then when I go to "install updates" I get the following message.
"Transaction error An unspecified transaction error has occurred. Under more details; Could not add package update for fedora-release rawhide-15-3 (noarch) update: fedora-release-rawhide-15-3 noarch" The repository for fedora is active in the repository list.
Slackware :: X Crashes After Update To -current / Resolve This?
Dec 17, 2010I recently upgraded to -current from 13.0 on my Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. It seems to have strange problems since then. The X crashes after sometime if I am running a video in firefox (flash based, say .....) in the full-screen mode. When I am not in the full-screen, it seems to run just fine. A similar thread was posted a few days back (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rashes-846796/) and I thought I had overcome the problem using one of the suggestions provided, but apparently, I just had not run full-screen videos ever since (and I thought it was solved!). code...
I should mention that, the crash happened when I was running a video chat on gmail in full-screen mode too. I have the Xorg.0.log for that too, if it is going to be helpful. Also, one thing I noticed was that even Ctrl+Alt+b_space does not work when this crash happens!! (so, I have to go ahead and reboot the system using the power button everytime) This I find very strange, since if at all, I should have been able to kill the process and restart X.
This seems to be an extraordinarily long thread, but I have put in whatever I thought could be useful info I should give. I will appreciate any help in resolving this issue.
Fedora :: Unable To Mount After Update To F12
Nov 23, 2009I've just updated to f12 from f11 and I can no longer mount 4 of my hard drives. The hard drives used to be in a raid array on a highpoint raid card, I removed this partitioned and formatted the hard drives and have been using them for about the past year without a problem. I am using a Asus P5E-VM motherboard. All hard drives are running ext4. The only thing I've really tried is noprobing the effected hard drives to no success.
p.s. I don't want to repartition/format these as they have some data on which I'd prefer not to loose.
