I know I should be able to do an online update using cl zypper but would much prefer to use Yast's sw manager as it's easier to review and respond to package issues that always arise (because of packages made by me or dl'ed from obs but from repos not enabled in the repo manager)currently running 11.2
View 9 Repliesin the last few days, Kpackagekit, which I use to update my system (openSUSE 11.4) had some difficulties to
1. install updates for flashplugin, because whenever you accept the license, Kpackagekit closes, and starts from beginning = a never ending cycle is started
2. fetch updates from Packman. It always throws a message with connection timeout - in Zypper and YaST no such problem occurs
Thats why I have fiddled around in YaST online update and found a feature "automatic online update". For that you need an extra package yast-online-update-configuration. I installed it and configured it to do automatic Updates.
So now I have a question on how it works. Because I have some additional repos activated: KDE updated Apps, KDE extra and the KDE release 4.6 repo, which brings the most recent KDE updates for KDE 4.6.
These repos have priority 90 whereas all the other repos - Packman, OSS, Non-OSS, Contrib etc. have prio 99.
Will YaST install all the updates from KDE with this setup? I am asking, because when I did online updates in Yast before, with prio 99 for the KDE repos, it did not update them, unless I choosed, "Packages --> update all, if newer version is available". I would like to set Kpackagekit into silent and just stick with YaST for that, but have an automatic system update.
I got a workstation with openSuse 10.3 pre-installed. After I did the Online Update from YaST2 and rebooted the machine as requested by YaST2, the system came to fail starting up an X session.

When trying to open YaST Software Manager, it downloads/refreshes repository information, but then, just when the loading bar indicates that the manager is about to open, a warning window pops up which says: "There was an error in the repository initialization." The program continues to open, but only packages that have already been installed are visible.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi had the problem that i couldn't surf access the internet while DNS and PING worked well. That i solved with ipv6.disable=1 at boot time. Now i can suf the internet with a browser but YAST is still unable to access the repositories which are accessible with a browser. Can someone please help me what the problem with YAST is?

On my work computer I installed Opensuse11.2 in VirtualBox. However online update or installs which are downloaded through YAST2 are not working. I get the message "Failed to download media ....." and that's it. I configured the proxy and when using the test proxy button it tells me that the proxy works OK. If I copy the link from yast into Firefox I get to the site of the repositories without problems only Yast cannot connect. Neither from the GUI nor from the console. I had no problems with Opensuse11.0 and previous versions. WHat is the problem?

Otherwise appears to boot, as I can see the drive from my laptop via samba. I cannot get a display in either normal boot nor in failsafe. I am also not able to get a terminal screen.Grub boot includes VGA=0x31aAre there any other boot options I can enter to at least get to a terminal?

I was updating all the installed packages on my system yesterday via YAST. The package manager seemed to hang when downloading a small update for YAST itself (related to ncurses, I think) so I hit the abort button. The package manager quit but now it doesn't work. Trying to start the software management module (Qt version) give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in qt-pkg
Check the log file!
So I then tried the console version of YAST. The software management module doesn't work here either. It give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in ncurses_pkg
Check the log file!
I Googled a bit and came to the conclusion that for the second error I should try the following command:
zypper install yast2-ncurses-pkg
But this just gives me another error:
zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.619: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So now it appears that both YAST and zypper are corrupt!
Yast online update is installed, but no repositories were configured. On previous installations, they were.
Is this a known problem, and how can I pull in the full list?
Not sure this is the right place and I feel really stupid for asking this but, I want to change the frequency of the online update checks but, for the life of me, cannot find out how. During install, I can configure it but I now want something different. I thought that there was a topic with yast under software but no. Only "online update" which basically give me manual update. I click on configure but same screen appears.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running OpenSuse 11.1 (this may be the thing that causes me to finally update ) with KDE 4.4 (specifically, 4.4.4 release 5). Recently (maybe the past month or so... give or take a week or two or so... first time I really remember it happening is when I realized they changed the repository for KDE 4.4 from factory to stable and switched them) >90% of the things I try to install via YAST fails with the following error... this example is me trying to upgrade avidemux from the Packman repository.

how certain packages such as glib, yast2, etc. are part of "Online update" i.e. new versions show up there, whereas certain packages are not (e.g. NVIDIA drivers). Is it a setting on the repository, the package, or does the new version need to be labelled specifically?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer (well actually Ive done it twice, once with full DVD image and once with network install). Everything was OK until Ive made update (yast/software/online update <-- BTW kupdate applet isn't working, just update bar appear and stuck on 0%). i haven't installed any additional packages, only the defaults (KDE desktop). after update only fail safe option is working (booting normally and looks like normal desktop, no visual differences between normal and fail safe booting, if there should been any). When I've tried to find solution for this problem, very ofter answers were -> graphic drivers problem (im using ati hd 4670 AGP <-- yea, AGP . well when i start normal boot green screen with lizard logo appear, then screen goes black for a second or two, then the green screen come again, and after another few second screen goes black permanently with working hdd for 30-40 second (hdd led blinking) BTW i have windows7 pro (booting fine) on this machine too, it was installed as first system on hd0,0. opensuse was installed on stand alone PATA disk (secondary EIDE master, ODD on slave). how to gather info which u all need to get this problem more detailed. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was using tripleboot system in one hard drive. That included Windows 7,Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04. And yesterday I decided to added openSUSE 11.3 at another partition. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 grub2 as bootloader.
At first there was no problem. All OS detected well, but after opeSUSE online updates last night my openSUSE partition won't boot. First, at boot I chose openSUSE and it said "Boot kernel first" and nothing happens. And then I boot to ubuntu and ran update-grub then I saw grub no longer detected openSUSE partition.
I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:
A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.
Yast-gtk sw manager - is there a way to reinstall an rpm? There is in the qt version but can't see how in gtk.

Got this most recently while trying to upgrade WINE from YaST Software Manager. Got a similar message for a different package that I recently installed, and just used zypper to do the install. I also used zypper to reinstall Yast2, but still got this error message. Running openSUSE 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7, GNOME 2.30.
it's a couple of weeks I can't perform YaST updates from my openSUSE 11.2. The reason is that YaST wants to connect to repositories "only" through IPv6, but my network doesn't support it. I quoted only because I suppose it prefers v6 over v4, but it keeps trying to connect without switching to v4 or returning error.
Even if I disabled IPv6 from YaST/Networking/Network Settings, I still have a local scope address. I connect to Wifi using KNetworkManager. The TCP/IP stack should know that if an interface has a local scope v6 address and a global v4 address, it's a bad idea to keep trying with v6. Italian mirror, garr.it, of openSUSE repository both has v4 and v6 addresses. If I try to ping opensuse.mirror.garr.it I ping v4, but if I try to telnet that host on port 80 it tries to connect to v6. Same if I try to connect with Firefox.
How to tell Linux that I don't have IPv6? I'm connecting from University of Naples wireless network. While unina has IPv6 via GARR's Teredo tunnel (2001:760::/32 as I remember), it doesn't reach students' network because DHCP server doesn't release IPv6, nor Zeroconf obtains one. I just would like to use classic IPv4 until, at least for now.
I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.
Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?
I chose Opensuse as my first distro. The problem is, whenever i invoke any one click installation from any website, (for example vlc), the yast manager is trying to download packages other than vlc which account for about 1.5GB. But I can see that vlc comes to merely 40MB. How to remove those unwanted downloads? and continue to install only what we wanted? I am running opensuse 11.4 with gnome on my notebook
