Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wubi - Windows 7 Partition Along With The Lenovo Recovery Partition
Aug 1, 2011I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my girlfriend's lenovo using a live disc. First we tried it out to show her the wireless would work fine (her previous lenovo was not ubuntu friendly at all). She's interested in keeping her windows 7 partition along with the lenovo recovery partition, so I tried doing a dual boot install. I manually moved the cursors setting the disk space on each partition, and we allowed Ubuntu to do the rest. Much to my dismay, the installation failed.
I've done some reading over the internet, and I think in our case it would be best to use a Wubi installation. We're interested in using 10.04, so where can we find a wubi installer of Ubuntu 10.04?
Also, any ideas why the installation might have failed? The iso was downloaded off the ubuntu main site, and we burned it using infrarecorder.

Jun 8, 2010i have windows 7 installed on my laptop and working fine..i want to install Open Suse 11.2 along side. I tried installing by booting with DVD for Suse. But it gave me warning to delete the windows partition.I would like to keep the partition intact with windows 7 and install Suse. Any suggestions ?I can create partition on my laptop but i do not want to modify the current windows structure.

May 25, 2010Using Ubuntu 10.04 with a Wubi Install. Vista Home Premium is the host. I can access all my partitions and external drives with the exception of my windows partition where Wubi is installed. I have seen some suggestion to go to "places" and click on "host", but there is no "host" listed. My windows install is on sda1 and I believe I need to create a directory for it and then execute a command in the terminal but I have no idea if this correct or what really needs to be done. mount my NTFS windows partition while I am running Ubuntu 10.04 in Wubi.

Then going to windows 7 partition and running wubi.[URL]... I have a brand new macbook air (one of the ones that just came out) and I'm tempted to try this, but if it doesn't work, then I will sit on my hands a little longer before I try to get the ubuntu on my mba. I looked around for instructions on how to do it, but I could only find instructions for grub-legacy (that ask you to modify C:/ubuntu/disks/boot/grub/menu.lst) and not grub2 (which doesn't have menu.lst) used by 10.04.

May 5, 2009Having already borked my system once while deciding to nstall Fedora 10 under the influence of a false sense of bravado, alcohol induced, I thought I should ask for a little insight before trying things again. Once I get my system fixed and before consuming alcohol that is.Short version:I thought Id be smart and mount the /home partition I use for openSUSE as /home for Fedora, I mean that why I made /home it own partition right? Well, thatwhen the alcohol took over and I thought I be rilliant(not so much) and just use my SUSE username for Fedora too, since, you know,e already got all my files and settings stored there.
Thus my request for the answer on how to correctly use the same /home partition across multiple OS installations; with the preferred goal of retaining access to email folders, various files, games (WINE) and such no matter what distro I�m using. Would it really be as simple as just not using the same user name for more than one distro? What addtional issues does that solve/create

Apr 20, 2011Im in a live CD session right now and copying the main ubuntu partition to a new partition. basically im doing this to install windows and have a separate partition for STUFFs like videos etc. since i cant have more than 4 primary partitions. win7 takes up 2 partitions and ubuntu takes 1 and an extended which will have swap and "STUFFs". i know how to reinstall the grub but i dont know the other stuffs.

Jul 17, 2011I had some trouble with my installation of Ubuntu 10.4 so I decided to reinstall the OS. (I have my /home on a separate partition).

I re installed Ubuntu on the partition I set aside for the OS. Ubuntu installed, everything works as it should but now all the contents my Home folder is gone! I did not set any options that would of formatted the /home partition during installation I only set the partition to be used for home selecting [use this partition]. I suspect that Ubuntu set the home folder back to the way it comes out of the box I need to recover this drive, its so important that its life or death! How can I recover this partition and the files that where on this drive?

Apr 4, 2010Ok. I have a media server running debian amd64. when I installed it I made separate partitions for root (/) home (/home) var (/var) and swap.
I'm adding some new hardware (mobo and ram) and want to reinstall debian. I would like to keep my home and var partitions intact and just reinstall everything in root (/) partition.
I'm unsure of how to do this during the installation. Do i need to format? how do I tell it to use the /var and /home partitions?

Jan 7, 2011My laptop has two hard drives with XP on the first and Ubuntu 10.10 on the second. Everything was going fine until I decided to reformat and reinstall XP on the first hard drive. Now, when I get to the GRUB screen and select XP, nothing happens. When I originally installed Ubuntu,I had to go into the BIOS and change the boot order to the second hard drive in order to get GRUB, but I could still boot into XP. Now the only way to boot into XP is to go back into BIOS and change the boot order back to the first hard drive. I only use XP for AutoCAD, but I would like for GRUB to work properly. I already tried "sudo update-grub" and it didn't change anything.

Mar 27, 2011I found myself with a deactivated version of windows and after trying everything my only solution was to do a clean install of windows 7 service pack one, so I did this everything worked fine but then the windows bootloader tookover again, so I used this method to fix that:

now is after doing this and reinstalling grub, when I select Win7 in grub I get the no such device error, so I'm pissed because now I can't boot windows when I was just getting back to normal, the good news is I can still boot ubuntu with nothing but a minor graphics error on the way in but that doesn't effect anything anyway.
Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Reinstalled And Now Windows Won't Animate, Performance Bad?
May 30, 2011I dual-boot XP and Ubuntu, and I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 to a freshly formatted hard drive.
However, it put GRUB on the wrong drive (The XP drive, not the Ubuntu drive) and so I had to restore XP's Bootloader then formatted and reinstalled Ubuntu again
(Yes there was probably an easier way to do that, but my way would have been quicker than trying to find out an easier way and I already knew it would work)
The problem now is that my graphics card performance doesn't seem as good on the 2nd install as it did on the first - windows won't animate when minimising etc and there's some lag earing when the login screen comes up.
I installed exactly the same way both times and yet it does something different both times.
How can I fix this problemperformance issue?

Aug 3, 2011This forum might not be the best place for this question, but some people here are pretty knowledgeable and may have more insight than I do about this. Anyways, I'm thinking about expanding an NTFS (Windows 7) partition on my desktop computer into unallocated space. I know that there is a risk when shrinking a NTFS partition due to fragmentation but are there any risks of data loss from expanding a NTFS partition? My common sense tells me there isn't a risk but I want to be 100% sure I won't lose any files.

Is there a tool I can use to resize my existing partitions WITHOUT data loss? I've been using gparted up to now for sorting partition stuff, does that maintain data when resizing (assuming I run from a boot CD or USB rather than a running system)?

Feb 25, 2010What are the advantages of the multiple partition setups other than resistance to data loss in crashes? Is there any other reason to have a special partition just for your boot directory (kernel files and config) than surviving a major crash?
Also, is it possible to make the Debian installer accept an existing set of partitions? Or even alter the size of the automatically created partitions? Does expert mode let you control the partitions? How many other very detailed things would I have to know to use expert mode, though?
Ubuntu Installation :: Online Update To 10.04 - Loss Of Windows Boot?
May 2, 2010Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.
Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.
Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).

1.-I tried using lvpm, but i ended up with a 60 GB new.disk and my hard drive has just 30 Gb (30 gb wubi installation and the 60gb from the new.disk)
2.-i dont know how to shrink windows partition and i dont want to loose my config, tweaks and installed apps my hard drive has 230 gb capacity and i want to leave at least 100 gb to windows

May 31, 2011I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.
