Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.
After a power outage my external hard drive that I use to serve a DLNA server with content lost all the files. The parent directories are still displayed, but there is nothing inside them, and I cannot write anything into them. (creating any file in them does not work.) I assume that I have a corrupted drive but I was hoping to find a way to recover the content. Most of it is backed up, but I have become a bit lazy in the past month, and have not backed up so there are a number of videos I don't want to lose. It seams odd that the directories show up, but the files don't. The drive properties also show that the correct amount of the drive space is taken up (for the videos to be present) so I haven't reformatted because I assume that will wipe out all traces of the data.
I have observed a problem twice now with Apache trying to restart but hanging somewhere in the process. This happens after a power failure; the machine comes back just fine, but not the web server. The machine is on a UPS, but occasionally it runs out of "juice" before someone can get to it (we have a generator for emergencies). When this happens, a ps indicates about three processes running that are trying to start Apache, but they just sit there - this time for three days since the power failure was on a Friday. I can fix this by killing those processes and doing an Apache restart - but that takes human intervention, which is not acceptable.
I suspect this may have to do with SSL, since when I do a manual restart it asks me for the SSL password. There must be some way around this so the system can recover on its own. This system's web site runs under SSL since it maintains medical information that must by law be protected. But it also could be life-threatening to someone if the system can't come back and as a result a person can't get help.
So I would appreciate some guidance as to what I could change that would allow for system recovery without intervention. I'm happy to provide any configuration file info, if you tell me where to look.
I'm wondering what my alternatives are when I lose power to the external hard drive where I have Debian installed. I realize that the best answer may be a battery backup UPS for the external hard drive. It seems that I recall that when a similar scenario happened on my SunOS Sparc workstation, I would simply hit [Stop-A] and then type in the "sync" command. I now have a laptop and am running Debian off of an external harddrive that has its own power supply. When I lose power, my laptop obviously continues to keep running but my session is essentially and understandably hosed because the main filesystem is not accessible. Gnome desktop goes away and I am thrown to the main console login. When power resumes, I cannot login to attempt a remount or anything. When I hit [ctrl-alt-del] thinking that that is less forceful than just holding down the main power on the laptop, I get cannot execute "/sbin/shutdown". Is there a [STOP-A] sync equilavent or some way or keyboard sequence to get to GRUB to issue a reboot command?
I have three machines networked to my desktop which run a bunch of simulations in parallel. As they're running, I connect to them via SSH and screen to keep an eye on the runs and look at the output. They stay usually connected for days at a time. The SSH servers and client are running Fedora 14. Yesterday one of my coworkers accidentally yanked the plug on one of the servers while it was running. When I powered it up again, I started getting some odd connection problems. I couldn't connect to it via SSH initially because I got the Remote Host Identification Changed (RSA host key changed) error. I deleted the key in .ssh/known_hosts, which allowed me to connect, but it denied my password. I then logged into that machine locally, restarted sshd, and removed .ssh/known_hosts again. Now I can log in via SSH without problems. However, the connection dies with a "Write failed: Broken pipe" error every few minutes (as opposed to the other two machines, which stay connected indefinitely).
So my questions are: 1.) why would a power loss affect the behavior of the SSH server? 2.) why do I keep getting broken pipes now?
Partition 1: Windows 7 - NTFS Partition 2: Ubuntu 10.10 - Ext4 Partition 3: Data - NTFS Partition 4: Windows Recovery - meh...
Basically, I have it so that I have one large NTFS partition (Data) for sharing files between Ubuntu and Windows. It works very well. I keep all my Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos on "Data" and then sym-link those folders to my home folder on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I'm afraid to bootup Windows. Sometimes when I boot Windows, files that I made or edited in Ubuntu get lost, unindexed or corrupt. It happens very frequently with image files (.jpeg, .png, etc.) but also happens with PDFs and folders. This means that not only do these files become unusable, but I also can't delete them. Even using $ rm -rf my_file returns a "Cannot delete my_file. It is not a file or directory."
The only way to get rid of these files is to perform a CHKDSK on Data when I boot Windows. CHKDSK always finds a shed-load of files that have gone haywire. I'm usually greeted by an seemingly indefinite list of "Removing index entry xyz from $afxyz" and other scary looking actions being taken out on my files.I keep backups of my files on an external HDD and a remote server, but it's no use when I'm backing up corrupt files.
Machine: Win2000 Pro, AMD64 Athlon 2GHz, 2x80Gb HD, 2 GB RAM Symptoms: Running 9.10 with dual boot no probs for ~ 1 year. Decided to upgrade online via synaptic to 10.04. Upgrade went well no warnings, etc. On reboot all OS options present in Grub BUT clicking on Win2000 causes the screen to blank temporarily and then return to the Grub menu ie. no functioning Win2000 boot option. Ubuntu 10.04 boot yields blank screen with flashing cursor, a sudden stream of IO error messages (can't capture it but the lines look identical) then screen flickers and I'm at the purple log in screen and everything proceeds perfectly from there.
Observations: For the first time on any of my ubuntu installs (i've been using since 8.04 always installing from CD though) grub installation asked where I wanted it. In fact, the screen shows all devices with check boxes wth which to make my choice. That is sdb, sdb1, sdb2, ... , sda, sda1, sda2, There was a message that says that if in doubt install on _all_. Being in doubt I checked all the boxes: sdb, sdb1, etc. I noted in the message streams that followed after i continued that some lines had "... this is BAD ..." but since it was all rolling along very quickly no idea exactly _what_ was bad.
Action: I am not a linux newb but I am a grub newb. I fished the forums and googled only to come completely confused about what the problem might be or what to do. Example: have i overwritten my win bootloader? is my mbr corrupted? if i remove grub what will happen? if i remove and reinstall grub will i get windows booting back? if i use my win2000 install CD will it overwrite my whole disk (as many warn) or can i just fix the mbr? if I do the latter what order do i ie use fix mbr then fix boot? The info i've come across so far either doesn't address what happened to me, deals with other OSs (XP, Vista), or is applied to earlier editions of grub/ubuntu. Right now I have not found a clear step by step that addresses my circumstance. Would anyone be able to provide some guidance? I need the windows boot to run some software (Matlab) that btw will not work with XP/Vista (hence the reason i still have win2k).
I used to have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 RC on separate partitions and I could choose to boot into either. Today I installed Windows 7 Enterprise trial version over the Windows 7 RC partition, and lost the boot screen. Reboot goes to Windows automatically. How can I get the boot options back to launch Ubuntu?
There is a disk 500 gb, it is broken on /boot and on /root and on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Whether prompt it is possible to redistribute a disk without loss of data namely it is necessary to make/boot and two equivalent on disk volume.
Whenever I power-down my CPU (not reboot, full power-down) my Ubuntu system will not boot up. No other OS is on the computer, just Ubuntu. Usually reinstalling grub will fix the boot problem. But I don't understand why simply turning off the computer would mess up grub. I have to keep my computer running 24/7 or I have to go through the process of rescuing the system.
I'm guessing it's something to do with the hardware and not the OS.
My mom's ubuntu 10.04 laptop ran out of battery during a software update and now it will not boot.
When attempting to boot normally, it comes up to the login screen but the keyboard and mouse do not respond at that point. Ctrl + Alt + F2 doesn't work.
Choosing recovery mode also does not complete. The last line showing is "Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... Done." Ctrl + Alt + F2 also doesn't work at that point, although Ctrl + Alt + F7 changes to another screen of text with the last line showing "init: udevmonitor main process killed by TERM signal".
I've tried booting from a 10.04 live CD and ran fsck which did not find any problems on the linux partition. I can also mount the partition and view files.
Running 10.10 After a main power failure I can't boot.
It says: ........... [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk [sdd] Attached SCSI removable disk [sde] Attached SCSI removable disk and stops.
I get a (initramfs) prompt and have no idea what to do with it.
Allready tried to install 10.10 again from a CD. But it also hangs immediately when it starts to install. The liveCD feature works OK and I can access the hard disk. I tried to update the initramfs with the liveCD but it says I can't write since I have only "read-only" access. But if I do "sudo nautilus" I have full access to the disk.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 a while back using Wubi. I have it installed alongside Windows XP. Just yesterday the power went out in my house while I was booted into Ubuntu. When I turned my computer back on I still have the option to select Ubuntu or Windows, but now when I select Ubuntu I get right into a grub prompt. Grub used to give me a list of kernals but now it just sits waiting for commands.
My computer was on when the power went out. I am not able to boot into ubuntu 11.4 install since that happened. I also have debian 6 and ubuntu 11.10 installed on the same machine and both boot just fine.
The machine boots as normal but stops with the line "disconnected from Plymouth". After the machine just sits there with a blinking cursor. I cannot start another terminal. Is my only option to reinstall.
I was using Ubuntu 10.04 for the last 6 months, recently I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, it worked fine for around four days, Now the problem is When I power up the system using power button, the system do not power up, I tried to boot from cd both Ubuntu and Windows XP, none works, I tried to go to BIOS setup using F2 and F12 (Acer Aspire 5920 model laptop), but i could not, just a blank display appears, here are some symptoms:
1. When powered on - LED indicating pocressor operation glows for a moment and disappears, few other LEDS indicating batter, music play, forward,stop LEDs glows as as usual,
2. Only blank screen appears
3. tried to switch on the wifi and bluetooth buttons, both did not glow indicating it is not working.
4. Paculiar thing is this symptons appears first time, suddenly all stop glowing and after 2 to 3 seconds again the system comes to this state and remains forever.
Questions:
1. Is it possible to be hardware problem? 2. If it a software problem the suspect can be Ubuntu 10.10 version?
today my desktop crashed due to power failure. When i again started the machine and tried to boot Ubuntu i m getting the following message in command screen:- "Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported. I have a box running Lenny and boot with lilo. Today there was a power failure and now the system is stuck on Lilo ..It doesnt get passed that. I tried to boot in single mode but the same thing is happens. How can I fix this problem
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I purchased a new ALFA AWUS036H wireless card. I would like to know if this "1Watt" wireless card is configured for full power. iwlist wlan0 txpower results:
wlan0 unknown transmit-power information. Current Tx-Power=27 dBm (501 mW). It appears to me that I should be able to increase the power. "iwpriv wlan0 highpower 1" does not work. Do I need to patch the new default driver that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the aircrack one following these directions:[URL]...? Monitor mode and a injection tests seem to work fine with the driver I have installed.
I was originally going to install debian on this old iMac G4 and everything was going well. But then I decided, hey wait one second, I could probably find a version of Ubuntu which works on this old iMac, and so... i stopped the installation and loaded the ubuntu 8.04 disc. The only problem is, it will no longer register the boot CD... because i kind of already did the partitioning and nuked the OS X... So now I just see a gray screen with a file image displayed revolving between a question mark and the file finder image.
I'm on HP tx2000 Tablet PC, with nVidia GeForce 6150 Go onboard, 4GB of RAM, Ubuntu 10.04 amd64 Desktop. I keep getting a blank screen after boot splash when I'm on BATTERY POWER. Though I get a blank screen, the screen comes alive when I SUSPEND the laptop by closing the lid, and then RESUME the laptop. Then I can see the logon box and whole desktop.
Usually people get problem by suspending their laptops (usually the screen not coming back after resuming), but now I SOLVE the problem by suspending my laptop. Well like I said I can somehow get the screen right, but I really can't (and don't want to) suspend and resume my laptop every time I boot. Problem occurs REGARDLESS of type of display driver I use. nVidia proprietary, nouveau... whichever driver I use, I get the same conclusion.
I use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running. If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again. The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).
I'm looking for any power monitoring devices for Linux to allow monitoring power quality, voltage changes, and outages. This would be for North American three phase power system. I want to have this data fed live to my own program. It should be something much better than just jury-rigging a circuit to fee the power waveform into 2 or 3 audio cards.
I'm very new to Linux and recently setup a desktop PC with Puppy 5.2.5. only. I chose to have a permanent install on the hard drive and loaded additional PETS and utilities as I thought needed for my use. Last night after immediately booting up the PC I had a power cut lasting a few minutes. When power returned and I repowered the PC, I found during Puppy's boot sequence it reported an error and remained in what appeared to be a console mode - did not carry through and load my desktop. So I inserted the Puppy CD and booted from that but I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with Linux to understand how I can get back my original desktop setup and run once again from my hard drive without having to go back to scratch.
On the last release, I had this app installed where I could pick my power profile. I could use power conservatively, and performance would suffer a bit, but longer batt life,or I could have it automatically detect, or I could have the apps use all the power they want and then some. I'm looking to reinstall that app. What was the name of it?I can't remember, and so far, can't find.
I had unplugged my PC last night as sometimes there's storms at night this morning I plugged in PC and the power light is blinking and the PC wont come on at all tried different power cord, same result
PC is a AMD athlon64 3300+ 2.4ghz SiS graphics

If it is the power supply, how do I find new one as I've never had to replace anything on it or any other PC?
Also, I really need access to the hard drive but it's a weird hard drive and was wondering if I could put that hard drive in my K7 PC, which already has 2 drives in it can a pc have 3 drives? do I have to add/have another ribbon cable for 3rd drive?
