Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Login After Latest Nvidia Activation?

Mar 28, 2010

Running HP DV9000 with Nvidia 8600 card. Just installed Lucid Beta 1. Live CD boots fine. Can't remember, but I believe initial install had login problems. So, I edited xorg.conf to use "nv" driver. Then, login screen worked fine. Activated latest Nvidia driver (v195.36.15) and now login screen is garbled, possibly frozen. I can't CTRL+ALT+F1. No mouse, no keyboard as far as I can tell. Have to hold power button to shutdown

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Driver Fails To Load In Kernels 2.6.32-23 And Later

Dec 6, 2010

I've been using kubuntu for a while, and I've been having this issue since the release of the 2.6.32-23 kernel. Originally, I thought it was related to my raid array and this bug: [URL] I'm still not convinced they're not related, but there is also apparently the possiblity of an nvidia driver issue. Previously, I rebooted infrequently, and I had a spare hard drive installed, so my grub menu would always appear (as it detected an alternate OS on this drive) and it was trivial to select the 2.6.32-22 kernel. Since I installed all updates, including the -35 kernel, it ran update-grub and now I have to press shift when I reboot. Specs/Summary:

Kubuntu 10.04
amd64.
nvidia driver 195.36.24
RAID 1 (linux software raid)
kernels installed: 2.6.32-21 - 2.6.32.25

when I boot with -22 or earlier, everything works great. when I boot with -23 or later, I get the kubuntu splash screen, followed by it switching to tty2, then I get it switched back to where the X screen should be, with the system log displayed, and then it switches back to tty2. After installing -35, I panicked a bit as I'd never had the grub screen not show (not knowing about the shift key), and so I poked around logs and it showed nvidia driver errors. I tried removing my xorg.conf file and rebooted, and I got the desktop to show again. I prefer the nvidia driver as I sometimes use dual monitors.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia - Driver Is Activated But Not Currently In Use (compiz Fails)

Aug 25, 2011

I have a geforce 8400GS and nvidia-current installed. However, the Additional Drivers app advises that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and that the driver is activated but not in use. I know other people have complained about this problem, but for me this is breaking 3D content and I can't get compiz to work either. When I try to start compiz manually (compiz --replace), I get this error:

Code: compiz (code) - Fatal: Couldn't open display My Xorg has nvidia as device driver. I'm using the NVIDIA X Server settings program to setup my two monitors, so I know that this is what is in use. In addition to the compiz problem (which I can get over), sometimes I can see the desktop background through the active window. It's hard to explain so I'll take a screenshot when it happens again. Things I've tried:

1. Installing nvidia's latest drivers - The installer was extremely picky, constantly complaining about other modules and drivers. After I finally managed to remove everything it didn't like and install it, X wouldn't load.

2. Reinstall nvidia-current - tried multiple times with no change.

3. Link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.41.06 - didn't make a difference.

Debian Configuration :: NVidia Driver Fails With Built Kernel?

Jul 30, 2011

I've posted here before (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66322) about problems arising from my attempts to get an nVidia driver to work with my custom kernel. Now those problems are all fixed, and I'm back to where I was: the built kernel boots fine, but the nVidia driver fails.

The custom kernel is as near to the stock one as I can make it, I'm just trying to find a working build process at present, before trying to build a later-version kernel.

I used sgfxi with "-! 40" to build the nVidia driver for my custom kernel; it reported that everything was fine.

With stock kernel - 2.6.32-5-amd64 ...

OpenSUSE :: Post The Version Of Nvidia Card That Fails With The 260.xx Driver

Many people are having trouble with the latest nvidia drivers. I think there might be a pattern and that might lead to a solution; even if that solution is "give up with that card you're using." So, here's the first:

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing NVidia Driver For Geforce GTX 275 Fails

Aug 20, 2009

I have just installed openSUSE 11.1 64 bit on my system. Subsequently registered to get an auto-update repo and auto-updated until no more updates were offered. Then I first tried YaST to install NVidia drivers from the NVidia repo (added their repo), but sax2 wouldn't recognize them. So I downloaded their 190. (beta) drivers, installed the kernel source code and gcc 4.3. Then I switched to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), closed the x server, ran the driver install as described (gcc 4.3 is installed). Installer said that all is fine (I checked the log to be sure). So I ran sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia, but the driver still isn't recognized.

I just updated to 2.6.33 kernel and I am using an Intel Mac with ubuntu 9.10 running native. I upgraded because the new kernel has sound working for the imac (at least through headphones). Once the kernel was updated to 2.6.33 the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which I had activated through systems -> administration -> hardware drivers is now inactive and will not work. systems -> administration -> hardware drivers says to look in /var/log/jockey.log, here is the last part of that file [URL]. PLEASE HELP OUT. I hate using the Mac os on the other partition.

Does anyone know a way to force a driver activation, or driver install from the command line in recovery mode?Even better, is there a way to force a driver installation from the "(initramfs)" prompt? We're having problems installing the drivers for a PNY GeForce FX 5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card. It goes straight to the "(initramfs)" prompt with the new card installed and, without the card installed it won't allow any drivers to be activated via Administration>Hardware drivers.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect Via Wifi Or Ethernet For Wireless Driver Activation?

Feb 13, 2011

When I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.

My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I've only been working with it for about a week, but I'm learning alot.

Ubuntu :: X Fails To Load With Nvidia Driver: "screen(s) Found But None Have A Usable Config"

May 8, 2010

My system is a Lenovo B500 All-In-One, with an Nvidia GTS 250M video card. nv seems to work okay, but I cannot get the desktop to load with the nvidia driver (nvidia-current, from the repository). I've been hacking away at this for a week and a half with no results. Every time I try to boot with the nvidia driver, the splash screen comes up for a second, the screen flashes a couple times between a "static" screen and tty2, then the screen seems to go to a test mode, where it flashes a series of solid colors indefinitely. Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I see the following:

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Tvout Fails

Nov 27, 2010

My current system (Dell Optiplex 260, 2.8 GHz CPU, 1.5 Gig RAM, Nvidia Geforce 5200 AGP, HannsG HX190 through DFP) was running Kubuntu 9 perfectly, but was lost due to a disk crash and a flawed backup. Rather than trying to fix a badly damaged system, I decided to go straight to 10. Installation went smoothly until I tried to activate tvout, which again worked perfectly under K9. Now, xserver goes into a start crash/loop and the system must be shut down using the power switch. While looping, the TV does seem to briefly go into graphics mode, but the monitor stays dark. The only way to get the system running again is to comment out the 'Screen 1' clause of the 'Section Serverlayout' in the xorg.conf. I even tried restoring the xorg.conf that ran fine under K9, same problem.

Here's the xorg.conf that the Nvidia Server Setting app generates:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Nvidia Driver Installation - Reboots Straight Into Terminal

Oct 15, 2010

I have been bashing my head against the keyboard for over 6 hours now i just got a brand new asus ul30v it uses Nvidia geforce G 210M.

I went straight to installing ubuntu 10.10 on the whole disc. when the installation was complete i was happy and logged in. only seconds after i logged in i was promted that i was recomended to install a driver for my graphic card, for 3d and such. so i followed the installation and was asked to reboot. so i did. but then ubuntu booted straight into fullscreen terminal.

While being in this terminal i have tried to purge and reinstall GDM amongst endless other things, including rebooting several times.

Not being able to do anything about it, i reinstalled, and repeated the installation of the driver. same story over again.

Bottom line is i have rebooted close to 30 times, and reinstalled over 5 times. ive tried installing from the terminal (excactly the same story). tried to download it from their homepage, then install it (couldn't install it because i had to turn off driver X and "terminate all OpenGL applications", wich i dont know how to do. tried googling it, but ended up worse than before..[url]

Im guessing i cant install the driver at all with ubuntu 10.10? i havent tried it with older ubuntu versions because, of course, i wanted the newest version.

I have barely been using ubuntu before, although i've had it dualbooted.

I have found alot of posts with people getting stuck in terminal on boot, but none of the solutions that worked for them worked for me, probably because they had different problems than me.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Cannot Be Used

Apr 14, 2010

A few days ago I installed 10.04 Lucid beta-2 and it came up OK. I then chose the recommended Nvidia driver "version current", which caused my system to come up in low graphics mode. I removed the driver and the system came up with no X11. I gave up.Yesterday I installed again, hoping that newer updates would fix the problem. The boot is now OK with no proprietary driver activated and all updates installed as of now (April 14, 05:30 GMT).

The Hardware Drivers dialog shows two choices: Nvidia version 173 and "version current (recommended)". Both of these show the status "this driver is activated but not currently in use". The only option offered is the button "remove".

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Not Being Used

Jul 4, 2011

I just upgraded to 11.04 a couple days ago, and it didn't go smoothly because I ran out of space, so I had to pause it and grow a partition.

When I got done there were several problems. One of them is that my nvidia proprietary driver is no longer being used. I found it in "additional drivers" and activated it, but it says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system. This driver is activated but not currently in use."

I can run the nvidia control panel just fine, and write an xorg.conf file, but after I reboot the above message stays the same.

My xorg.conf file says to use the nvidia driver. My Xorg.0.log shows the nvidia board coming up what seems to be normally.

The "appearance" control panel doesn't even have the special effects tab anymore.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Activate NVidia OEM Driver On Ancient PC

I was using it for my old scanner (HP, no longer supported by MS or HP), but when my Windows installation finally died I thought it was a perfect time to try Ubuntu. (Xsane running under Ubuntu does support that scanner.) I can get Ubuntu started on it, but when I try to activate/install the recommended Nvidia OEM driver, the system gets sick. Ordinarily I'd not worry about it, but the system only starts into low graphics mode, which leaves some dialogs too large for the display and partially unusable or worse. The PC is a cheap homebrew, using an A7N266-VM ASUS mb. It has some kind of Nvidia chipset on board, but no graphics accelerator.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: X Does Not Start After Nvidia Driver Installation On 10.10?

Feb 16, 2011

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on my new computer: an Asus U33Jc. It is a 64bit machine. Everything seems Ok until I try to install the nvidia drivers. First, I tried to install it through the graphical interface as it popped up shortly after the install. Then, I tried to install the most up to date driver (290.19.36) found on nvidia's website. In both cases I get the same problem.

When I boot the computer it freezes at startup typically at the stage: "Checking battery state..." but not only (sometines before or after). In any case I never get to a graphical interface. I looked at many forums on the web (here here here and here for instance). But no solution work so far. Apparently there is a conflict with nouveau so I have blacklisted it. It seems the computer does not send the information on the good output, so I tried to twick my xorg.conf in different ways without any result.
