Many people are having trouble with the latest nvidia drivers. I think there might be a pattern and that might lead to a solution; even if that solution is "give up with that card you're using." So, here's the first:
7600GS PCI with 32 bit opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.6
The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

I have just installed openSUSE 11.1 64 bit on my system. Subsequently registered to get an auto-update repo and auto-updated until no more updates were offered. Then I first tried YaST to install NVidia drivers from the NVidia repo (added their repo), but sax2 wouldn't recognize them. So I downloaded their 190. (beta) drivers, installed the kernel source code and gcc 4.3. Then I switched to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), closed the x server, ran the driver install as described (gcc 4.3 is installed). Installer said that all is fine (I checked the log to be sure). So I ran sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia, but the driver still isn't recognized.

I just got a new computer and I have been busy setting it up with openSUSE 11.2. I am trying to install the Nvidia proprietary driver for my graphics card, a Geforce GTX 260, but it will not work. I added the Nvidia repository and I am installing the driver for GeforceFX series cards but every time I restart I get a command prompt and if I try to start x it says that my card is not supported. This is really getting frustrating, I need the proprietary driver so I can play DDO with Wine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have spent ages looking at similar problems but not not quite the same. I have installed 11.4/Gnome (x86) and wanted to use my GT430 card. I went here: 'http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers' and used the 'one click' install for current cards. All went ok until I rebooted and I got a 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.846578 seconds' message. I got five of these in succession until the 'gdm[1239]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors' appeared and it popped me down to an init 3 login.
So, I deleted the blacklisting conf file so that I could get back in to Gnome on Nouveau (which I did ok). I then noticed there was no /etc/X11 Xorg.conf file so I ran /usr/lib/nvidia-xconfig to generate one (which it did) - but it made no difference. I am at a loss know after spending 8 hours on this. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. My machine is still at fresh install state so even if I have to reinstall 11.4 it does not matter.

Currently using Nvidia driver version 195.36.31, it's the version that works with Nvidia-kernel-dkms, would updating Nvidia driver to the current 275.09.07 driver version break my setup?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOnly about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
After a disk crash I reinstalled openSuSE 11.2 and as always downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for my geforce 8200 graphics.
Unlike all previous cases, this time the driver does not install. The contents of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log are below. The error refers to being unable to to locate version.h

The custom kernel is as near to the stock one as I can make it, I'm just trying to find a working build process at present, before trying to build a later-version kernel.
I used sgfxi with "-! 40" to build the nVidia driver for my custom kernel; it reported that everything was fine.

I've been using kubuntu for a while, and I've been having this issue since the release of the 2.6.32-23 kernel. Originally, I thought it was related to my raid array and this bug: [URL] I'm still not convinced they're not related, but there is also apparently the possiblity of an nvidia driver issue. Previously, I rebooted infrequently, and I had a spare hard drive installed, so my grub menu would always appear (as it detected an alternate OS on this drive) and it was trivial to select the 2.6.32-22 kernel. Since I installed all updates, including the -35 kernel, it ran update-grub and now I have to press shift when I reboot. Specs/Summary:

kernels installed: 2.6.32-21 - 2.6.32.25
when I boot with -22 or earlier, everything works great. when I boot with -23 or later, I get the kubuntu splash screen, followed by it switching to tty2, then I get it switched back to where the X screen should be, with the system log displayed, and then it switches back to tty2. After installing -35, I panicked a bit as I'd never had the grub screen not show (not knowing about the shift key), and so I poked around logs and it showed nvidia driver errors. I tried removing my xorg.conf file and rebooted, and I got the desktop to show again. I prefer the nvidia driver as I sometimes use dual monitors.
I have a geforce 8400GS and nvidia-current installed. However, the Additional Drivers app advises that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and that the driver is activated but not in use. I know other people have complained about this problem, but for me this is breaking 3D content and I can't get compiz to work either. When I try to start compiz manually (compiz --replace), I get this error:

In addition to the compiz problem (which I can get over), sometimes I can see the desktop background through the active window. It's hard to explain so I'll take a screenshot when it happens again. Things I've tried:
1. Installing nvidia's latest drivers - The installer was extremely picky, constantly complaining about other modules and drivers. After I finally managed to remove everything it didn't like and install it, X wouldn't load.
2. Reinstall nvidia-current - tried multiple times with no change.
3. Link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.41.06 - didn't make a difference.
Every time I boot, I get the following when the Nvidia driver tries to load.

This is a fresh install of Fedora 13, the kmod-nvidia drivers were just fixed I assume cause I tried to install them for a few days and they would fail. Well I guess they finally fixed the Nvidia drivers for 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64 but it has broken amarok..
What is the best place to get an updated nVidia video driver for CentOS 5.5? Is there a CentOS package available that will update it? Or is it best to download it directly from nVidia? Also, I do not have an internet connection on the machine, so it will have to be a manual download and installation.

I upgraded because the new kernel has sound working for the imac (at least through headphones). Once the kernel was updated to 2.6.33 the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which I had activated through systems -> administration -> hardware drivers is now inactive and will not work. systems -> administration -> hardware drivers says to look in /var/log/jockey.log, here is the last part of that file [URL]. PLEASE HELP OUT. I hate using the Mac os on the other partition.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old small form factor PC with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1GB RAM, and an nVidia 5200 graphics card 128MB. OK, so a low-spec machine (but that's the great thing about Linux right? Don't need high-end h/w) but it works just fine, except that it can't play full HD (1920x1080) MPEG-4 video. Very jerky and lots of dropped frames. Same in both Movie Player and VLC.
I can't afford to increase the RAM and as it's a SFF I can't just swap the mobo and CPU for something faster so I'm wondering whether getting a higher spec graphics card would make any difference?I'm using the nVidia proprietary binary driver (latest version) and searching the forums I found a post where someone said that the nVidia driver needs at least a 512MB card for HD video.A colleague has a higher spec nVidia card (7600 IIRC) that he'll sell me, but before I spend any money, is this likely to improve things? How much does the graphics card affect performance, or is it simply a case of the machine overall just isn't high enough spec?
The rest of the message is " located in /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-server/build". The version is Ubuntu server 8.04. Why can't it, and how can I help it along?

Is the open source drive good enough to use or should I install the Nvidia driver? I know that things are generally easier with the default driver, especially for support on older cards, but I would like to get the best performance I can. This is for my Dad's computer, so he won't be playing any games, but if it will help with 2D and video that would be great.
The card is an Geforce FX5200 fanless card, I've heard they are well supported in Linux.The computer is a P4 Dell 3000 with Ubuntu desktop 10.04 32bit.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?
q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.
