When I right click a file or folder in the Nautilus file manager (Gnome3 on F15) and choose "Properties", I no longer get a Properties dialog. Instead, Nautilus just sits there, frozen.I tried running it from a terminal, and this is the output it generated:

I have installed Virtualbox from their website. I was able to create an XP virtualbox. I have tried several times, though, to download the XP disc to the virtualbox and I keep getting an error message that says it needs 32 bits. I found the display properties box and changed it from 16 to 32, also restarted the computer.I am still getting a wrong machine message with this error message about 16 bit. What am I missing?

Ever since I moved to GNOME3 and every time I mouse right click and select "Properties" in Nautilus, there is no response. In fact it only freezes the browser and I have to force to kill it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI tried Wubi, and all is fine, but when I choose Ubuntu on the boot menu, it shows some dialog, then just blank. its stays blank forever, so I had to shut the computer off.Then, I burned the Ubuntu iso to a CD and botted from it at startup. This at least showed the purpl-ish install screen. After I pressed enter over install, it went to the blank screen again. just black, nothing appeared.I'm not sure what the problem is. My laptop is fairly new, it shouldnt be having an issue to run it.I have 4Gb RAM, plenty of space on the hard drive, and a 1Gb video card...I have no clue what to do, as this is my first encounter with an Linux distro ever. help?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm evaluating OpenSUSE and have installed 11.3 with Gnome (from the latest liveCD) and have it all running fine in a VM at the moment. We are looking at using it for an iSCSI/NFS/Samba server and have it allrunning and it is all configurable from Yast. However I can't seem to get Nautilus to play ball and allow sharing of Samba/NFS shares under folder properties (I'm fairly positive I've done this fine in Ubuntu). All I ever get is Usershare/Gnome sharing (which I believe is Webdav).
I must say I am so impressed with OpenSUSE, the partition manager is just a dream to use and everything works really well it would just be really nice to be able to share NFS/Samaba shares from the file manager. There doesn't seem to be any other file managers in the repositories so I'm a bit stuck now.
I'm looking to have an 'access control list' tab of file/folder properties in Nautilus.

i am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.4 lucid, i just reinstalled the Grub2 after my windows erased it, and now it boots into grub2 but i can only boot into my windows7 loader, ubuntu is not even listed as an option for me to boot into its just a bow with the win7 loader. How can i get the grub2 to load ubuntu back again? i followed the guide on this site to reinstall the Grub2 and set up the dual boot. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have succesfully attached some networkdrives (Windowsshares actually) to Nautilus. It's possible to access these with Nautilus and the Open File Dialog of Open Office.
However .. The "Save To" in Google Chrome and "Open File" in Notecase are not showing these networkdrives. Is this a different browser? Is there somewhere somehow a setting to see the drives?
often we need to add attachments to things, like adding a picture to a gmail when composing or to add a picture to a document. When I try to do this, nautilus shows only folders. It shows all the folders I would expect to see but none of these folders actually contain documents. If I navigate using places and open folders of course all my files are there, I just cant see them when trying to insert a file. Why might that be? Does anyone know?
I notice the "select which types of file to show" pulldown is empty - whats happened?
I have a "Storage" partition in my hard drive which I have labeled as such and added to fstab. This is my fstab file:

The problem is that when I open up nautilus and click the Computer icon in the toolbar (which gives the fake computer:/// address) I see two items referring to my Storage partition:
* Storage (which appears to be of "unknown type" in the properties).
* 500 GB Hard Disk: Storage (which is the one that works).
I am suddenly no longer able to run any Nautilus scripts. If I right click a file, select Scripts, then a specific script, nothing happens. No errors, no messages, etc. I have checked permissions, and everything appears to be OK. I am also no longer able to run anything via Alt+F2.Typing that keyboard combination does absolutely nothing.

As a result, my vlc no longer works: When I run it to display a movie (any movie, I tried several) I get the sound OK, but there is no image, and the window stays small (like when playing a sound file). How do I get vlc to display movies again?
View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything went fine but whenever I rebooted, Ubuntu 10.10 was not an option in the boot list. However, Windows shows up and boots just fine. I am currently tri booting (not sure if that's the correct term) Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, and OpenSuse each on a hard drive of their own. In the dolphin file manager I can still see all the files for Ubuntu so I know it was not partitioned over or deleted.
View 7 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:

DockbarX was working.
Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic.Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

Now if you click on a usbdrive it give this error: "Unable to mount 'volumelabel' Not Authorized".Previous it automatically mounted it, making/removing mount points as needed in /media, or you could mount by clicking on the drive icon in nautilus. (It varied a bit with package updates, but i didn't worry too much)Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong? I'm lost where to start, and systems nautilus or gnome-volume-manager use to mount things.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI decided to install the Ubuntu Netbook remix (9.10, I believe) on this extra IDE hard drive I had (my other three hard drives are SATA.) My primary hard drive contains a Windows XP, my second contains Windows 7, and my third SATA drive is just NTFS-formatted storage. I went through the installer and choose to format and install on my 40GB IDE hard drive, which it did. Then it finished and rebooted. It apparently decided to install the GRUB bootloader onto the primary hard drive (not the one it was installed on,) which was not my intention. The bootloader froze the boot of my computer and wouldn't work. (Stuck at loading GRUB.) I couldn't even get to the BIOS. So I pulled the plug on the primary hard drive and tried to boot again. I could get into Windows 7 just fine, but that was it. The problem, though, is that the CD drive (also SATA) no longer shows up in My Computer. Also, after changing the boot order and replugging in the former primary hard drive, it wouldn't show up, either. Nor would the IDE one (though I'm pretty sure that's because Windows doesn't understand the EXT (or whatever Ubuntu uses) file system.
Does anyone know why this occurred and how to get those drives to show up in Windows again? I don't really care to get the netbook remix working here, since this isn't even a laptop, it was just an experiment. Also, I'd love to know how to remove GRUB from my primary hard disk so that I can boot from it again.

View 2 Replies View Relatedboot up in to chameleon, lists only Mac OS X as a boot option. Reboot, load Ubuntu 10.4 install cd, get to a terminal, mount /dev/sda3 /mnt grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3
reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.
Transmission used to show space remaining on the drive you choose in the add window. Now it doesn't. Was this removed? I LOVED that convenience of not having to go to a separate file browser or terminal to show space. I tried posting at Transmissions forums but it's been 4 days with only 7 views and no reason to bump b/c the forum is so slow I'm still on the front page.

It does recognize the file as a music file as it displays the music note icon in the comic balloon next to the music note file icon when the mouse is positioned over an MP3 file, however no sound is played.If I double-click the MP3 file, totem is invoked and plays the MP3 file just fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora and had what appeared to be 2 panels showing so clicked on one 2 hide it, now I can't see anything on the other panel. If I move my mouse over the panel I see:

A note pad which disappears when I move the mouse over it and thats it. Sometimes when I point my mouse at them they disappear as well. How can I get my panel back? I thought maybe adding an application to the desktop to open a terminal session would be a good way to start, but i don't know where or what the command is for this. (I did mange to set one up so I could start Firefox). If I Open a terminal session then what do I do to get my panel back ?
I'd like to know, what happened to this tool? Till F10 this tool was responsible for automounting Usb drives/Cdrom drives that were connected before I logged into the System via gdm. Since F11, this feature seems to be gone. I recently noticed that my external usb disk stopped to "automagically" appear on the desktop after login. Now I have to powercycle the disk (switch off, switch on) to have it appear on the desktop again. Is there an alternative tool to gnome-volume-properties, or do I really have to play around with hal to get this back? Doesn't really makes to me any sense to remove this feature.

Today morning i accidentally deleted the top gnome panel. I created a new one which was just an inch wider. But i am not able to change any of the properties of the panel except position. It says some of the properties are locked down. I have gnome-panel installed already in my system. How do i enable these locked properties.
