Ubuntu Installation :: No Unity - Hardware Not Compatible
Apr 29, 2011
After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04, I am told that the hardware is not compatible with Unity, therefore the system boots immediately into a normal, compiz-less OS. I managed to install CompizConfig Settings Manager but after I chose "Wobbly Windows" it still won't show any sings that it's using compiz.
Remember when all we used to do was:
System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects
Well, there's no "Visual Effects" tab. How to move on? I'd like to understand why I'm not even offered the chance to choose between Unity and Ubuntu Classic. Also, what happened to all the Visual Effects? How do I enable them?

I brought my netbook so I could continue to keep up with my homework, which amounts to a lot of typing and editing some TIF files.
Problem: Windows 7 isn't compatible with the router/modem I have access to, so I have no internet access in the apartment we've rented. I know that it works, because I'm using the apartment owner's ancient anemic desktop. Can't do homework on this though.
Problem 2: I have Windows 7 Starter, so I can't use compatibility mode, so I can't use Wubi.
Problem 3: I don't have an optical drive and have just a 512mb flash drive which may not work, so I'm not sure how to fix this.
Problem 4: I don't have a Windows 7 backup disc; never received one.
Problem 5: My dad works with copyright and intellectual property so he'd notice if I pirated Windows and would be extremely not okay with it.
I could probably buy a bigger flash drive if I really had to, hopefully they're not too expensive. I am most comfortqble with Ubuntu but I will use whatever will run the Gimp (or some TIF editor) and Firefox. I cannot afford to get 3 weeks behind on my homework.I've only been off the plane for a few hours and am trying to get used to the French keyboard, so I apologize for any typos that slipped through.

Tried it with Wubi for a few days and now I can happily say that I'm on a single boot system with Ubuntu 11.04 taking up all my hard drive. I say I think I've upgraded from Windows 7 as I have a few windows programs that I need to install (looked at wine and the progs I have are compatible - what does this mean in terms of installing them? One program for example is FlexiSign. I will search but is there an easy way to install windows programs?)

Ok so was looking through a guide and stumbled on this: ppc --> 32-bit, compatible with all Macintosh computers (excluding Intel Macs) and the PlayStation 3. Does this mean that if I have some old Macs (G3s) to be precise I could put Fedora on it? Does this involve a whole lot of hacking or not?

I have stumbled up around many problems in the past weeks, and recently my windows server is just giving me big pain with the DNS. Instead of having constant trouble trying to fix those problems that doesn't stop coming. I am trying to find the opportunity to transfer my settings onto a Linux setup. My needs are pretty simple, I am currently creating a simple website for a school project that I need to finish fairly soon. I also need to attach it to a forum, most likely phpBB3.
My first question would be: Which OS should I opt for. CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu Server? Should I add in features into that to make my transfer simpler? Secondly, what would be the website manager, Apache or IIS? Is php easily compatible with the systems, or will it need configuration somehow? Finally, can it be possible for me to install programs that are exclusive to windows, such as Dreamweaver? I got a small knowledge on Linux systems, but I am completely new to the server side!

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

I'm facing this problem since a month on Fedora 10. I have some 45 packages for upgrade through KPackageKit which belong to KDE.
While I give it to upgrade, it gives me a strange message which says
Multiple packages exist that are not compatible with each other.
This is usually due to mixing packages from different software sources.
When I press the details button, I get these details.
ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:
libkwalletbackend.so.4 is needed by kdebase-runtime-4.2.0-7.fc10.i386
Please report this error at [URL]
I get this message only for the KDE packages. I have libkwalletbackend.so.4 in my /usr/lib directory.

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I've just recently installed the latest version of fedora on my machine. I already had win7 64-bit so I did a dual boot with the Fedora live CD using the "use largest amount of free space option"(I had intentionally left 30GB of unallocated space). The problem though is that fedora just keeps_crashing, at any point and very randomly. I didn't have this problem with ubuntu. Fedora can crash right after I initiate the boot sequence, or it can wait until the booting process starts, or the login screens shows up, sometimes it even lets my use the OS but invariably crashes. I've done numerous hard reboots which only seemed to worsen the matter, now I can barely get past login screen. This issue also happened on the live CD, but with perseverance I got fedora running on my computer.
There's an error message that shows up for a second or two right before the boot sequence is initiated, luckily(!) the system crashed at the moment it was showing and I was able to write it down :
pci 0000:01:00.0 : no compatible bridge window for [mem 0xfffe0000-0xffffffff pre f]
Here are my specs:
Intel p965 chipset (i heard this one didn't work well in previous fedora releases, maybe this is the problem?)
4GB DDR2 Ram
nVidia 8600 GTS graphic card
HDA Intel Integrated Soundcard
Intel core 2 duo E6400 processor.

I realise 11.04 is only just out, but is this a known problem? and is there a fix? code...

So I upgraded, but it says something like my system "doesn't have the resources to run Unity". Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz, 6 GB, 1 TB HD, nVidia 9500 GT. So it's not a gaming video card, but not that primitive...??? And I can't even find the Gnome menu item to force it to launch Unity...

I have a Fujitsu Stylistic st6012 tablet with a wacom digitizer built in. With UNE 10.04 the stylus was working fine, the buttons/rocker did left and right clicks. After upgrading to 10.10 the stylus was still working, but the buttons were not.I could click by tapping with the stylus, but to access menus in applications, or even shutdown menu, I have to keep pressing the stylus against the tablet. If I just tap, the menu will appear for a brief millisecond and then disappear again. Like what happens when you double-click with a mouse.
After some searching I have managed to get the stylus buttons to work - setting button closest to the tip as leftclick and the other as rightclick. The clicking works as expected inside applications, and when the applications menu-bar is on a line of its own - not on the same line as close, minimise, maximise, tray-icons, shutdown... In applications where the menu is moved up on the same line as close/minimise/maximise.the clicking must be done by click-hold - if I click-release the menu would go away.So that is problem number 1. Not sure if it is Maximus that is creating the top panel?
Next, the even bigger problem:The leftside icons menu introduced with UNE 10.10 is not behaving well with my stylus.Sometimes the very first tap/click on an icon launches that application. Subsequent taps/clicks on ANY icon does nothing. Only nudges the icon, scrolls the bar slightly or nothing at all.Other times not even the first tap/click launches anything. This makes the OS and my tablet utterly useless After getting the stylus buttons to work, rightclicks actually works on the icon-bar (unity?), bringing up the menu with name and Remove from Launcher options. But it does not respond to taps or leftclicks - other than making the rightclick-menu disappear.NOTE: the icons-bar and menus work as they should using an external mouse, so the problem must be related to the wacom stylus.
Here is some values from xsetwacom:
kris@kris-st6012:~$ xsetwacom --get "Serial Wacom Tablet" TPCButton
on
[code]....

I have tried to find anything on how to reverse back to the standard Gnome desktop, but all I can find is instructions on how to install it.

When the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.
I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!

I don't want to use more than one workspace. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to reduce the number of workspaces to 1 and and remove the workspace switcher from the panel. I want to do this in Unity and can't find a way to. Right clicking doesn't let me remove from the launcher and I can find no way to reduce the workspaces.

Upgraded yesterday from 10.10 to 11.04, UNITY issues with the PC. The "Ubuntu Classic" option at login works fine.
The symptoms when attempting to use UNITY are:
1) after login, I see desktop background image
2) mouse works, context menu I can pull up has "Create Folder", "Create Launcher" ...etc
3) keyboard works, ie, CTL-ALT-T brings up terminal, I can type away
4) desktop shows no toolbars, no menubars, no dash, nothing UNITY related
Running unity_support_test (output below) reveals it is a PASS for UNITY support:
$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV515
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.10.2
[Code].....
Also, System->Administration->"Additional Drivers" shows "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system", and there are no selections available to me in that dialog box.

I remember I tried to boot Ubuntu Netbook Edition LiveCD once, but I had a problem with 3D graphics, and a result I couldn't see the menu panels, etc. So, I was wondering, will the same thing happen with Natty, since they are both Unity? Or will they improve support for graphics in 11.04?
