Debian Installation :: Etch To Lenny Libc Upgrade?

Apr 2, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade an etch system to lenny, I've updated my sources list to lenny and ran apt-get update. When I try apt-get install apt

apt-get install apt I get the following:

Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree. Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.  apt: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7-1) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch10+b1 is to be installed Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.2.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages

if I try apt-get install apt libc6, it wants to upgrade a whole heap of packages - will this be a safe thing to do ?

Ubuntu :: Checking Disk Mean Checking All Partitions On Hd?

May 10, 2010

Sometimes at startup I get this message "Checking disk 1 of 1". Does that mean it's checking all partitions on the hd? After a bad shutdown there is no prompt for fsck to run and the system just boots up. In fstab I have both options set to "1" for the partition Ubuntu is on, all others set to "0". Any ideas on both?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Not Checking For Updates

Jun 8, 2010

I have Update Manager set to check for updates daily, to 'only notify about available updates', and have 'important security' and 'Recommended' updates turned on.Since upgrading to 10.04, Update Manager never starts up to tell me that there are updates available. If I run it manually and click on 'Check', I have to type my password in and then it will show that I have updates to install (if there are some of course).

I realise that I shouldn't get a notification icon any more, and that update manager should open instead.Anyone know whether this is something I can fix, or if it's a bug or a problem with the update server that I can't do anything about other than wait?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Unity - Hardware Not Compatible

Apr 29, 2011

After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04, I am told that the hardware is not compatible with Unity, therefore the system boots immediately into a normal, compiz-less OS. I managed to install CompizConfig Settings Manager but after I chose "Wobbly Windows" it still won't show any sings that it's using compiz.

Remember when all we used to do was:
System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects

Well, there's no "Visual Effects" tab. How to move on? I'd like to understand why I'm not even offered the chance to choose between Unity and Ubuntu Classic. Also, what happened to all the Visual Effects? How do I enable them?

Ubuntu Installation :: Checking Md5sum Of A Burned CD?

Dec 26, 2010

I checked the md5sum of the iso using winMd5Sum utility, it is OK.

To check the CD, right clicked the md5sum file in it, send to winmd5sum, and then copied the corresponding hash from the ubuntuhashes page into the bottom text box, and compared. The message box says md5 sums are different. Now the question is, have I done it correctly, I mean, is this the way to check a burned CD, OR, is there another way to check md5sum of a burned CD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Isn't Compatible With Router / Modem

Feb 22, 2010

I brought my netbook so I could continue to keep up with my homework, which amounts to a lot of typing and editing some TIF files.

Problem: Windows 7 isn't compatible with the router/modem I have access to, so I have no internet access in the apartment we've rented. I know that it works, because I'm using the apartment owner's ancient anemic desktop. Can't do homework on this though.
Problem 2: I have Windows 7 Starter, so I can't use compatibility mode, so I can't use Wubi.
Problem 3: I don't have an optical drive and have just a 512mb flash drive which may not work, so I'm not sure how to fix this.
Problem 4: I don't have a Windows 7 backup disc; never received one.
Problem 5: My dad works with copyright and intellectual property so he'd notice if I pirated Windows and would be extremely not okay with it.

I could probably buy a bigger flash drive if I really had to, hopefully they're not too expensive. I am most comfortqble with Ubuntu but I will use whatever will run the Gimp (or some TIF editor) and Firefox. I cannot afford to get 3 weeks behind on my homework.I've only been off the plane for a few hours and am trying to get used to the French keyboard, so I apologize for any typos that slipped through.

I say I think I've upgraded from Windows 7 as I have a few windows programs that I need to install (looked at wine and the progs I have are compatible - what does this mean in terms of installing them? One program for example is FlexiSign. I will search but is there an easy way to install windows programs?)

Now that I've finally gotten it past the blank screen, it starts the install but then hangs while checking the PCI cards, I included a photo of where it hangs, and I don't have any PCI cards installed.

Server :: Malloc-64 Memory Leak/trashing?

Mar 2, 2011

I'm afraid I have a huge issue with my newest Fedora 14 server. I recently migrated to Fedora 14 from Centos 5, which was very stable, but had ancient packages and libraries and my users were revolting...The machine is a HP ProLiant 360 G7, with 12G RAM and 6 SAS drives in RAID 5.After I migrated to Fedora 14, I noticed that for some reason, during the course of about 24 hours, all usable RAM "disappears" and applications are forced down to swap space. Needless to say I didn't have this issue on CentOS.

The server does heavy IO as per it's function (it's a heavily loaded file processing server and user simulation computing station among other things, which causes lots of random IO), so I thought it may be the cache, but then I realized it cannot be - because obviously Linux will use onyl "unused" RAM for caching and frees it up as soon as an app need it. Then, I thought to check the "slabtop" to see what's going on in Kernel memory. Unfortunately I don't have the screenshot from the time just before the latest crash, but there's a certain value displayed by slabtop, which slowly, byte-from-byte creeps over all available RAM, eventually forcing applications down to the swap. This is malloc-64, and as you can see from the bellow copy-paste, it's building up again even now...

Code:
Active / Total Objects (% used) : 9118075 / 9153600 (99.6%)
Active / Total Slabs (% used) : 152157 / 152157 (100.0%)

Installation :: PHP Compatible With Systems Or Need Configuration?

Nov 10, 2010

I have stumbled up around many problems in the past weeks, and recently my windows server is just giving me big pain with the DNS. Instead of having constant trouble trying to fix those problems that doesn't stop coming. I am trying to find the opportunity to transfer my settings onto a Linux setup. My needs are pretty simple, I am currently creating a simple website for a school project that I need to finish fairly soon. I also need to attach it to a forum, most likely phpBB3.

My first question would be: Which OS should I opt for. CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu Server? Should I add in features into that to make my transfer simpler? Secondly, what would be the website manager, Apache or IIS? Is php easily compatible with the systems, or will it need configuration somehow? Finally, can it be possible for me to install programs that are exclusive to windows, such as Dreamweaver? I got a small knowledge on Linux systems, but I am completely new to the server side!

Fedora Installation :: Checking For Libraries Currently In Use?

Jul 19, 2010

I have just installed from the Live Cd (Fedora 13). So far so good except that I have just installed the updates (which has taken some time) .

The updater screen shows a full progress bar and next to the progress bar is this text " checking for libraries currently in use" this has been at least one hour showing the same thing, it hasn't changed (PC is still running OK). Does this mean I can safely quit and the updates will be OK or should I keep waiting for a reboot screen or updates success message ? Is this normal, if so how long does it usually take to complete?

Ubuntu Installation :: Distro For Diagnosing / Checking Hardware Components?

I'm looking online right now but if anyone knows of a Linux distro I can use to diagnose/ check hardware in that machine. Something that runs live would be preferable. I'm thinking knoppix and am reading about it right now.
