View 2 RepliesI made the big mistake of installing the preview version of the new Unity desktop that will be part of 11.04.I now have a computer that runs like a dog and it is near impossible to do anything. I have tried to find anything on how to reverse back to the standard Gnome desktop, but all I can find is instructions on how to install it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen the live CD is booted up, there is a notice saying Ubuntu is sorry, as there is no 3D support in the laptop. If the Live CD doesn't see the video card etc, then there is a problem. The laptop has NVidia Geforce 310M, meaning it has the 3D support, only Ubuntu doesn't see it on live boot, so what the use of the Unity desktop? The Gnome starts up.
I have seen Gnome, but I'd like to see Unity. How can I do it? I can of course download the NVidia driver. But to activate the driver, I have to restart the laptop, then the Live session would go away. By the way, if Linux to be everybody's OS, I think the "restricted" drivers should be included, as they are allowed by the owners to be downloaded!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 10.10 netbook edition to 11.04 and something went wrong. After the grub menu I get the password window on that typical magenta screen with lights. Afterwards I get a message, that the netbook connected to the internet, but the Unity desktop doesnt show. Still the magenta desktop without anything. Already have tried to select the previous linux edition on the grub-menu, but no change.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing more than one instance of the same app is a real pita in Unity.If I have 3 (or more) pdf documents open in evince then there isn't a way to shift from one to the other using the mouse. Previously I had the windows on the taskbar and could click on the one I wanted. In Unity clicking on the evince icon on the launcher just brings ALL the instances of evince to the top - I still then have to shuffle the windows around to get the one I want.I've been trying to get used to Unity over the last few days, so maybe I am just doing it wrong, but if not then maybe I should file a bug report?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

View 1 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently switched to Kubuntu 10.10 maverick on my laptop. Almost every time that I start my laptop up now, the screens and the start bar are very plain looking. When I go to my desktop effects, it says that they have been stopped or shut down by another program. so, I use alt+shift+f12 to turn them back on. Sometimes they turn back on and stay on, other times they will shut right back off and say that another application has shut them off. So, I'm just wondering if this is a known bug and if so, how do you fix this?
On a side note, I've noticed that be web browsers are kind of glitchey on kubuntu 10.10. For instance, whenever I am on a site where there is a text box that I need to type into, it sometimes doesn't load and when it does, it will mess up throughout the time i'm typing. So,

I installed ubuntu 11.04 in my notebook. When I try to use some compiz features my desktop is not show after I reboot it. How to resolve it, I don't know, because I found nothing in my desktop. Only docky after I install that.

I thought it was normal so I tried it out for a while but it was glitchy and I didnt like it so I tried disabling it. I couldnt find a way how to do it, and I didnt have any Panels on my desktop and my background was just plain white, all that was visible was the Unity bar on the left side of the screen.
I decided to just reset my ubuntu settings to default without losing any of my Apps, movies, music, pictures etc etc
After doing that I restarted Ubuntu but now all i get its a white background without any panels and only Docky pops up at the bottom.
Is there anything I could do?

I'd like to be able to dual boot into Windows or Linux on my PC so I've installed in on an ext4 partition on a separate drive from Windows. The installation process ran smoothly and the dual boot functionality works as planned. The problem I'm having is that after logging in, the login window disappears (as does the options bar at the bottom of the screen), and then nothing else appears, just the mouse cursor (sometimes the loading icon, sometimes not) and an empty background image, no icons, no menus. It doesn't matter how long I leave it for, nothing ever happens from this point on. I am technical, however, unfortunately ,I'm very new to Linux (something I'd like to remedy) so I'm a bit stuck with what to try next.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I finally managed to install a copy of Natty on my old laptop, but when I logged in, the desktop was frozen. I could move my mouse, but I couldn't click anything. I didn't know if it had to do with packages not being up to date or something (though I doubt it is) so I ran sudo apt-get update, and then tried to run sudo apt-get upgrade, but I got an error saying "E: Unable to locate package upgrade". Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I found a similar question asked at [URL]... login. However, there was no answer. I thought that maybe an Ubuntu-specific forum would have an answer.
View 5 Replies View Relatedcurrently i run both KDE and Ubuntu Unity 11.04 on my machine. I have encountered a little problem when switching desktop environments. With KDE, i prefer to use KWin as my windows manager (since i find it highly polished), and with Unity, compiz (not by choice). The problem is that if i don't switch the windows manager to compiz before switching over to unity, all hell breaks loose. Same with switching over from Unity to KDE.
The only solution i have found is to switch to Classic Ubuntu. and use the compiz fusion icon to select the windows manager in order to avoid any problems.
when i log onto the either KDE or Unity, how can i load the correct desktop environment in case it crashes (which it has)?
Note: this has also become a concern to me because of 11.10 removing the classic gnome. If the proper window manger can be loaded before entering the preferred desktop environment KDE, Gnome3 or Unity,
Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus.It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)
I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.
