My Dell Latitude 2100 worked fine with the pre-installed Ubuntu 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and the touchpad stopped working. Restored to factory condition and it again worked fine. I re-did the upgrade, this time asking it not to delete the obsolete items.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for about a week now, I have had many, many problems, but usually figure them out by searching through this forum, except this time:I have an HP touchsmart tx2 1025dx laptop. When I installed it, everything worked great, sound, mouse, and even the touchscreen. Right now I noticed that when I press the button on by laptop which toggles the touchpad, it works but after it would freeze the menus, so that they would not drop down, I have confirmed this after many restarts. Now the touchpad has stopped working completely. Although if use the toggle button, it will still freeze by menus. It also somehow stops my keyboard from typing things into programs, like firefox, but still somehow the control-alt delete still lets me restart it.
My question is how can I reset the mouse settings/preferances to how they were when I installed? I found something a while back that was xorgconfig??? but it has since been taken out of ubuntu 10.10 (I read this somewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong.) View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my VMware stopped working. I got a message to recompile into the kernel. I followed the prompts and it was unsuccessful. I tried to uninstall and reinstall VMware getting the same error. See below an extract from the log file.Before you can run VMware, serveral moduels must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.

I updated my Ubuntu to Meerkat last night. everything seems to be working fine, except when i went to iplayer, it told me flash wasn't installed. I followed the link, and installed flash from APT source. In the software centre it is listed as installed. However, still cannot view flash videos.i have tried rebooting too.

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R which is i think is more than capable for running Unity 3D. When I rebooted after upgrade there was just a blank wallpaper screen, without Unity interface at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, which borked booting on that partition. I made a fresh install of Karmic on another partition which is booting fine, but I can't get Audio CDs to work, period. They worked in Jaunty and every release before that I had installed. Data CDs work fine in Karmic. I'm using plain ol' Ubuntu 32bit. I'm not sure where to start. There have been other threads where other people had identical symptoms. Either the problem went away mysteriously on its own, or they gave up because nobody believed them. In any case, I'm beginning to wish I had stuck with Jaunty.

I have a laptop hp6720s with network controller: Intel corporation PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG [Golan] Network connection (rev 02), dual boot vista/ubuntu 9.10, fully updated (kernel 2.6.31-17). I use a router edimax BR-6204 wg to use the net with other laptop. Till now i have using wicd for controll wireless without any problem, internet was quick and responsive. (Quick connection without any failure).
But today the internet was very slow and wireless starts to connect and disconnects intermitently, doing it unusable. This was what occured when i upgraded from jaunty to karmic and used the network manager from gnome, but then i fix the problem installing wicd. Now wicd behaves in the same way as gnome-network-manager. If i connect directly the computer to the router by wire, i have internet and everything works perfectly. How i can fix the wireless?. How i can do it works with ubuntu 9.10 and?.
On install my wifi was working, but when I rebooted it stopped working.Since then I've tried numerous things to attempt recovery of wifi. No luck so far.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?

on my netbook I have a Debian unstable/sid system. A few days ago I did an apt-get (dist-)upgrade which I think also updated the X-Server. Since then my netbooks keyboard and touchpad are not working as soon as the desktop is started (I think gdm).
The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices?Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.
My Dell Latitude D820 had lenny installed and working fine. I did not have anything exotic installed (other than perhaps nividia drivers). I went about upgrading to squeeze following the notes/documentation on the debian web site. During this process it mentioned that the following firmware was not going to be installed (as it is not freeware; BTW I had non-free in my sources.list):

On reboot it was clear that the new kernel was not in a healthy state. Even when booting with older kernels I had serious stability issues. After about half a dozen reboots trying to resolve problems I was experiencing the laptop would not even load the Dell splash screen on power up. I could not even navigate into the BIOS. Nothing appeared on the monitor (or external monitor).
I put an ISO disk in the DVD drive to see if it would boot from the DVD; it seems to load but absolutely nothing appeared on the screen. I tried navigating the grub menu (not displayed) and load my windows partition. When it booted to the point where windows would normally display the GUI it flashed several times and displayed a 'BSOD' with the following message:
*** Hardware Malfunction.
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***
It looks like my laptop is now FUBAR. It is out of warranty so any fix is likely to be DIY. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.

I can access the network but I get no response or what so ever in my browser.Downloading language support or any software doesn't work either.Haven't changed anything to my settings and checked the router. Router works just fine.

Ubuntu doesn't seen any sort of input device any more, no line-in , no mic ( front as back ).Own on to the specs of my machine:It has a realtek ALC861-VD audio chip.2 mic jacks, 1 line-in , 2 out (front and back) and a coaxial port thing .The os is a upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything except this and my tv card sound works.I have pulse audio tools and alsa mixer ( although it broke during upgrade ) installed.alsa info is available upon request, so is any other info may you need it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedOn a fully updated Ubuntu 9.04 system, I had successfully configured wvdial to connect using a USB modem ("Update" brand) with an ID of 067b:0611 (uses the pl2303 driver module). In considering an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10, I tried a LiveCD and was unable to connect using wvdial. However, because I had made the CD a couple months before, I went ahead with the upgrade (via the internet; not a fresh install) in the hopes that it would end up working or I would be able to find a solution for it.
The Problem: The upgrade was a success as far as I could tell, but when I tried to connect to the internet with wvdial, I was not able to. I checked the wvdial.conf settings to make sure they were the same as before, added some new ones I thought it might need, unplugged the modem and replugged it, restarted my system, etc., but all to no avail. Whenever I would try to run wvdial to connect, I would get the following output:

This was different than the output I used to get with wvdial, but when I went over to my browser (Firefox) the internet worked fine. I'm assuming my email client and other things will work okay as well, but have not tested them as of yet.
A final touch I did to make connecting a bit less 'painful' was to right-click on the panel (at the top of the default Ubuntu screen), and click on 'Add to Panel'. Then I selected 'Custom Application Launcher', chose 'Application in Terminal' for 'Type', gave the launcher a name, pasted in that 'horrifically' long command line above, gave a brief description in the 'comment' box, then pressed 'OK'. Voila! I now have a launcher on my panel that with a single-click will bring up a terminal screen where I enter my sudo password and it connects. Then when I want to disconnect I just go back to that terminal, press Ctrl+C, which promptly disconnects me and causes the terminal to vanish into thin air.
Now, I don't know enough about this stuff to know why this command worked and wvdial didn't, but if you know, feel free to post a reply. Or if you'd like to see what settings I had for wvdial that worked in 9.04 but not in 9.10, let me know. Or if you think it's worth checking to see if this should be posted as a bug in either wvdial or Ubuntu, you can mention that as well.

It was working good till i did the distribution update to Kubuntu 10.04. After the upgrade while startup, a message is displayed on the screen saying

Like many others it seems, my wireless has stopped working since a recent upgrade The answer does not lie in analysis of logs, settings etc. but surely with those who did it - they should provide a fix. I cannot believe everyone expects each individual users to go into their own analysis of why this is no longer working as it is clearly widespread. I have been using Ubuntu for 18 months without this problem on the same dual-boot laptop, and it still works on Windows as before, only Ubuntu 10.4 has recently stopped my network card from working.
I need to know when this will be fixed. I have been embarrassed by promoting Ubuntu to many colleagues who now also cannot work at home on their wireless networks. Seriously disillusioned I may start looking for a more stable alternative to Windows.

Wakeonlan was working just fine with Wheezy on this machine. After upgrade, wakeonlan will resume from suspend but not from shutdown.
I have no problem with other machines (same software setup) after upgrade. None of my other machines have a broadcom NIC.
No BIOS settings were changed during the upgrade. If I enter the BIOS on boot and make sure settings are correct then 'save' and shutdown, without booting to debian, I can then successfully wakeonlan. Then, if I do not boot debian, but shutdown before debian starts, I can wakeonlan successfully again.
If I boot debian and then shutdown, game over: wakeonlan nolonger works.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled Ubuntu on my HP pc-40 computer. I used to run Hardy Heron and am now running Karmic Koala. The cd drive which had had issues for a while, broke after finishing the install, when I tried to get the cd out.I dont know if this has anything to do with it, or if my computer is too old for Karmic Koala, or if possibly the harddrive didn't appreciate being overwritten a second time - but the graphics are not working well (small squares of previous windows linger in my present browser window*)everythin is much slower, and many applications come up without a border, or their windows cant be moved with the mouse.
To top it off, while I tried to fix a bug with the terminal (no border) and uninstalled it, I couldnt install it back. So no terminal, which really makes even a newbie like me sad.If I cant solve it in a few days I will probably try to install a smaller distro via USB - I think Slax can be installed straight to USB without a live cd?
I have a Broadcom wireless card in my hp dv6500z laptop, I had it all working properly in FC9 thanks to bbfuller and his post on the subject. After I upgraded to FC11 I have been unable to get it to connect.
I can see my neighbor's sites and suppose I could see my own if the SSID was allowed to broadcast but I keep that turned off. I put in all of the setting, including the network security key, but it won't connect, then when I go back and look again, the security key is not even close to what I put in; it gets changed to a huge string of characters.
I redownloaded broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2.tar and followed the instruction on the post once again but no luck, which, after I thought about it, was a waste of time because if I can see other's wireless, then the card must be working. I have tried using Network Manager and not using Network Manager and still no luck...
