Ubuntu Installation :: Re-partitioning Keeping Vista Windows Intact

I'm currently running ubuntu on my netbook, and vista on my desktop. Earlier i had an ubuntu installation alongside my vista, this has resaulted in my desktop making a countdown at booting. After the countdown it boots up vista. So i'm aware that there still are som leftovers from my earlier umuntu adventures.... here is my objective: I want to keep my vista installation intact, BUT i need to clear all earlier grub and ubuntu installations...and finally I want to install a fresh ubuntu 10.04.

i have windows 7 installed on my laptop and working fine..i want to install Open Suse 11.2 along side. I tried installing by booting with DVD for Suse. But it gave me warning to delete the windows partition.I would like to keep the partition intact with windows 7 and install Suse. Any suggestions ?I can create partition on my laptop but i do not want to modify the current windows structure.

I'm using BackTrack4 in my office to run a MySql server for internal testing purposes and it's working fairly well till now with 1 inconvenience that it doesn't autostart. Sometimes I have to shutdown the server and after booting again certain parameters like ip address, mounting a separate HDD partition etc. get reset and I have to manually assign IP, mount partition, start required services like Mysql, SSH again.Is there any way to avoid that ? That is, to assign the same network configuration, starting of certain services and auto-mounting the partition?

I'm currently setting up a server with 2x 1TB disks in raid1. (Centos 5.5)In the future, if the storage is insufficient and I decide to upgrade the disks to 2x 2TB, could I just:
- dump ghost image of the array on usb drive
- replace hdd's and build new array
- ghost array with image created previously
Would the above work, will the new partition automatically resize to 2TB or do I need to partition right now with LVM? would it work with LVM?

my Windows partition and the future Suse partition will be on different HDDs, so this should ease things a bit. Suse is on HDD 2 and Windows on HDD 1 HDD 2 will be the default Master drive, so I want GRUB to give me to option to boot either on Suse, either on Windows 7 I want to keep Windows 7 boot manager intact. I.E. If I switch HDD 1 to the Master drive, it will boot directly into Win 7.
What I wanted to do is:
Unplugg Windows drive
Install Suse
Replugg Windows drive and manually add the entry to GRUB
if I keep them both plugged, Linux will not touch HDD 1 MBR?

I have an HP Compaq nx6235 Notebook, which was happily running Windows Vista Home Premium, until I finally got around to loading Linux openSUSE 11.1 from a DVD issued with a magazine last year. I now have a problem, because my Windows Vista has been wrapped up in the Linux partitioning system. I know it is located at dev/sda1 and that it is an HPFS/NTFS filetype, create a dual boot drive on my notebook, so that I can happily play with both systems. I am newbie, so the instructions should be as clear and simple as possible.

I would like to ask those with more experiences when re-installing M$ Vista crap.I do not want to reinstall my working Fedora 11. Do I have to backup my linux partitions? How do I resurrect my linux bootloader then? With safe mode with Fedora DVD, right? Are there any differences between Windows 7 dual boot with Fedora 11?

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I've finally had enough of Windows and have decided to go with Ubuntu. However I hope someone can help me with this query... I currently have a single hard drive which I have partitioned under Windows into two. The old C:drive holds software & the windows O/S and the D: drive is where I stored photos, documents, etc. Can you tell me if it is possible to install Ubuntu into the old C: partition and leave the d: partition in tact (for a few weeks to ensure I have backups of everything on here). Alternatively, if I add a new drive and install Ubuntu onto there, will I still be able to access the old D: partition (or would I need some kind of dual boot config)?

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips about this.I have very little fedora experiee and wanna start playing with it now.I'v bin using it for some short time a long ago but nothing much.Now I could use some help with this:Can I and how, instal Fedora11, while having Windows7 instaleed allready and then have them both with dual boot. I guess it should be possible but some tips / guide would be great so I don't kill my windows and have to reinstal all over again, as i wanna keep windows as main OS for work but have fedora to learn as well.By the way, I have 2x640Gb in raid0, 1st partition 100gb with Windows7 on it, and the rest on another partition. I have a question someone may help with. Why is it Vista seems to be so off limits to partitioning? I have never seen it where you could not create partitions like you want until I ran across Vista on a Compaq Presario F 700 Laptop. I finally got The vista partitioning tool too to allow me 12 Gigs but that is it. I seemingly can go no further. I would like to keep Vista on there but take it to the bare minimum HD size, so I can load other linux OS's.
I have 56 gigs of free space after installing ubuntu 9.10 So far I haven't been able to make a swap partition or any other partition for that matter. Is there a way to manipulate Vista partitions?

When you paratition the disk on windows, it leaves all your documents on it, right?
There, there's 49% left. IF I set Ubuntu to 48% of the disk, would it destroy the files that are on the right 48% of the disk? Or, does it not matter if you defragment
That's not my hard drive deframenting, it's just one I found on the web. It's rather small at 4 GB.

I attempted to install windows 7 to the partition where vista was installed. The install failed, think it's a dodgy burn, and obviosuly took grub with it. However it's also somehow screwed up the partitioning of an extended partition where instead of two ubuntu's, a partition for my media files and test partition for chrome all is left is a big chunk of 'unallocated' and swap. I found a recovery tutorial here but the instructions are little vague.

I had 9.10 installed and I did an upgrade to 10.04. However I cannot see anymore my Windows Vista partition with grub.. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite p305.This is my boot script output:

I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.
Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.

I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine. My specs far exceed the requirements to install, so I know there's no problem there.On installation I receive an error somewhat through that says something like:Quote:An error occured:Permission deniedFor more information, please see the log file:C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalTempwubi-9.10ubuntu1-rev160.logSo.... I go to that file, and the last line in it is:Quote:OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: u'C:\ubuntu\install\ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso'I did run Wubi Installer as an Administrator, and unblocked it giving it full privileges.It's really annoying because my download speed is 80kb/s so it takes about 3 hours to download. During that 3 hours I can't use my internet so I have to wait, and wait, and wait, and then boom.error. And wubi can't pick up where it left off, you have to uninstall to reinstall, which sucks tremendously.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 within Windows Vista to try it out I have since tried to uninstall it but the uninstall fails with a message saying it is unable to find the file it is attempting to delete - sysout=. The process has produced a fairly large text log of the procedure and the error but none of it means anything to me.

My windows vista stopped booting so I had re-install vista. Now that I have done that Vista automatically boots every time I turn on my computer. I can still see that the Linux partition is there but I do not know how to boot it.

I had Ubuntu 9.10 and windows vista on my laptop and both systems boot normally throw grub but after I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS windows is shown on the grub loader but if I selected it all I get is blinking cursor, Ubuntu boots just fine.

After the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.4 I'm not able to boot on my Windows Vista any more. It is most likely due to my fault during installation, since I ask to overwrite with GRUB also Windows partition's MBR (but if I remember well I think it was not the best solution to put as default overwriting all the MBRs).Anyway I was not able to fix it until now.Here is the RESULT.txt from the boot script:

I recently accidentally corrupted my windows vista partition whilst trying to extend it via gparted under ubuntu 11.04 and then cancelling it shortly after starting. Resulting in me being unable to boot into vista (I don't have another copy of any windows OS so I'd really like not to have trashed this one )
Looking on gparted now my partition is Fat32(?) and apparently only has 36mb used =/

I am trying to install Xubuntu on an old Pentium3. This computer only takes keyboard with the this type of connector: link. When I type the name using this keyboard nothing happens. The mouse (connected through USB) works fine however. Does Xubuntu (or other Ubuntu) based computers have a known issue with this type of keyboards? I am sure the keyboard works fine and infact the problem happened when using two different keyboards.
