I have a fubar'd Windows 7 install I need to get working on another partition so I can do some development stuff. I use Ubuntu 95% of the time though and so the machine has an option at boot for what OS I want to go into. Does anyone know if I boot up with the Windows disc in and choose the repair option if it will screw up my boot options and I potentially lose my ability to boot into Ubuntu?

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips about this.I have very little fedora experiee and wanna start playing with it now.I'v bin using it for some short time a long ago but nothing much.Now I could use some help with this:Can I and how, instal Fedora11, while having Windows7 instaleed allready and then have them both with dual boot. I guess it should be possible but some tips / guide would be great so I don't kill my windows and have to reinstal all over again, as i wanna keep windows as main OS for work but have fedora to learn as well.By the way, I have 2x640Gb in raid0, 1st partition 100gb with Windows7 on it, and the rest on another partition. --Had windows 7 and installed Ubuntu dual boot
--all was well but after some messing around with a failed Backtrack install I had to repartition some things to clean it up
--The partition where Backtrack was installed was corrupt so I deleted it and extended my Ubuntu partition.
--reload got the no such partition rescue grub
--read threw a bunch of forums and could only seem to find mostly threads on only being able to load Ubuntu and not Windows. Most having to do with post OS install problems and not re partitioning.

--after that my memory of events is a bit fuzzy, a lot was going on. In short I got a message in the terminal saying "this is a BAD idea" and something about another MBR. (sorry I cant be more specific)
--reading on I decided I would try my windows bootloader restore
--now windows loads up fine but it doesn't even give me an option to boot Ubuntu. I launched a live CD and checked GParted. The partition is still there.

I want to install Ubunto netbook on my compaq mini 730, but I want to keep my windows xp OS as well and have the dual boot option. At the moment I have the hard drive partitioned to C and D. My question is - what is the best way to install ubuntu and keep windows ? Should I create a separate partition for it ? if yes what size ? Can Ubunto install itself on C next to windows automatically ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed Lubuntu alongside my existing Windows XP installation. The menu came up on boot allowing me to boot into either Lubuntu or XP. But, after I install all the Lubuntu updates and restart, the option to boot into XP is gone. The boot menu comes up, but no XP option. I reinstalled Lubuntu again with the same results: after the updates, no XP option. I'm thinking I will reinstall Lubuntu again, and before I run the updates, I will make a copy of grub.cfg for later reference so I can add the XP section in again- am I on the right track here?
View 5 Replies View RelatedA while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.
my Windows partition and the future Suse partition will be on different HDDs, so this should ease things a bit. Suse is on HDD 2 and Windows on HDD 1 HDD 2 will be the default Master drive, so I want GRUB to give me to option to boot either on Suse, either on Windows 7 I want to keep Windows 7 boot manager intact. I.E. If I switch HDD 1 to the Master drive, it will boot directly into Win 7.
What I wanted to do is:
Unplugg Windows drive
Install Suse
Replugg Windows drive and manually add the entry to GRUB
if I keep them both plugged, Linux will not touch HDD 1 MBR?

I get a screen with only 2 options, the second and forth. How do I get the Dualboot option?
I was running Ubuntu 10.04 as my only OS. I then booted from the Ubuntu CD and divided my HD into two partitions, one for my Ubuntu and the other I formatted to NTFS so I could load Windows. I booted from the Windows CD and installed Windows on the second partition. I am now unable to boot into Ubuntu and I do not have a boot menu at start-up to choose what OS I want. I went back in with my Ubuntu CD and selected the "bootable" option for both partitions through Disk Utility but it still boots only to Windows. If I change the Linux partition to "bootable" and deselect that option from the NTFS partition, my computer starts up and then give the error, "No operating system present." What do I have to do in order to have a boot menu show up that will allow me to choose what OS to use at start-up?

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

But its always fedora I set bios to boot from the cd drive and yes it ask me hit any key to boot from the cd so I can reinstall windows 7 but it's fedora again. It happens the same with the USB drive. I think I don't need to reinstall Win7, it's there in Hard Disk. I am new in Fedora (infact I installed Fedora today in the morning).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?
Basically what it says in the subject. In the Allocate Drive Space part of installation theres 'replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu' and 'Something else' but nothing for installing them alongside each other, which I want to do.
View 14 Replies View RelatedInitially had windows xp in my system. Picked up on free partition (*it was not a primary partition*) and installed Debian from CD. The installation went fine. Towards end of installation the grub install ran detected windows xp presence and I continued with the install. End of install, prompted that the system would reboot.
However on reboot, I wasnt presented when boot option ( windows xp vs debian) but my windows xp directly got booted. How to get this boot option.
Problem is that Ubuntu installation program doesn't want to "offer" Dual-Boot option on my main HDD. Only format option and manual partitioning.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
I'm currently having a problem trying to remove the black screen that appears at Start-Up that asks me which operating system I want to run...I've already deleted wubi but this screen keeps appearing every time my computer starts up...How do I remove or disable this feature?

I recently rebooted the machine to watch some Netflix movies, only to discover that the GRUB menu no longer has an option to boot Windows.I imagine that this could have happened after an apt-get upgrade installing a new kernel; it has been a while since I rebooted the machine and could have missed it.

I have two operating systems on my PC, 1- Fedora 12 2- Windows XP. when I re-install windows xp on PC yesterday, and reboot system, doesn't display grub menu to select a OS!! I tried to repair it with fc12 DVD 32bit, but it doesn't have any option for repairing grub (fc10 DVD had this option!!)

Was running my new Ubuntu 10.10 build alongside my original Windows 7 partition, but now the Windows 7 boot option has disappeared following a trip to the update manager Tried the Update Grub2 command to no avail. (e.g. sudo update-grub) What is weird is that I now have two Ubuntu boot options i.e.

I recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.
During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.
So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.
