I installed Fedora 14 in my HP laptop (dual boot, with Win7). After reboot, I don't get wireless connection (wired connection is fine). The wireless connection in Win7 is fine. I am just not able to get it in F14.

After viewing another post I've provided the output of "sudo lshw -C network" command below (I've blocked out my MAC address on purpose). It appears that the lan card is not even being recognized. The card is enabled in bios (I've checked twice). I don't get it, the wireless worked fine before I did a fresh install of 10.04LTS. I can't use wireless because I have the b43 driver firmware issue that I can't resolve unless I get my wired connection working.

I have been using Ubuntu for three years and haven't had a problem upgrading until Karmic Koala, it broke my system twice, not fataly, though.I am currently using Jaunty and wish to upgrade to Lynx. My question is, "Can and how do I backup my current installed software so that I can install it on to Lynx withoug having to install each program again?" Would Clonezilla do this? I am not a technical user but I have learned how to use the command line so I would be willing to go that route as well as a GUI application.

It turns out that there are 320 packages that match that description (I think). Is there a way to do what I want to do? Shouldn't all of these dependencies have been installed as a handful of meta-packages instead?

I've configured the device for my network's settings in YaST's Network Settings tool. Is the card turned off by the kill switch? Where do I find the kill switch?
just installed ubuntu on a dell inspiron 6400 but the wireless doesnt work.
However, it works 100% when running from the live cd.
Can i install/copy the driver from livecd to hard drive, or is there another soultion for this?
I just got my self a netbook. I bought the one with linux because I figured that if they sell it with linux, it's probably using h/w which supports linux. I played around with the Mi variant it had pre-installed, but it was a bit limited and slow, so I installed UNR instead.The install went fine, and UNR is really nice to use and feels faster than the Mi too which is great. However, wireless isn't working. It's got a broadcom chipset (BCM4312) which I think needs a proprietary driver, but when I use the Hardware drivers tool, it doesn't have any options to install a driver.

I don't know what settings to adjust or enable or disable. It's not my router, this is the only wireless connection in the house that I have trouble with.

The computer does not respond to any key input except "ctrl+alt+del", which restarts the computer.The machine is a dell inspiron 6000 with inboard 915gm video card, and the bootloader was written to the harddrive mbr. Any help would be highly appreciated.I need to be more clear. Installation went fine, problem appeared on the first reboot.

It was a good CD. I encountered no error reports while installing but I can't understand why after I click on Debian lenny in the grub, it would act as if it were booting and then suddenly shutdown.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an F12 DVD (from a UK supplier) which I took to be a "full distribution". But looking back on the web site it was not described as such. After booting I selected the Replace Existing Linux System option and it listed the installation of 204 packages - much smaller than the 933 packages when I installed F9.
The kernel is now FEDORA (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE)
My problem is that I am now faced with a very intimidating terminal. I am sure the installation did not offer a graphical interface. I have tried to get Gnome running by following the Installation Guide :-
1) 7.4.2 Booting into a Graphical Environment
I type in -gedit /etc/inittab
and I get back --bash: gedit: command not found
2) 15.3 Switching to a Graphical Login
I type -yum group install "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Response -Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again.
3) Again under 15.3 - bullet point 3)
Type -/etc/inittab
Response --bash: /etc/inittab: permission denied
I have now run out of ideas. I'm sure it is not supposed to be difficult but I don't understand the implications of the command line responses. I really don't want to be condemned to a win dependency.
the samba seems not working ever since i fresh install from system. When i want to share a folder, error message appears :

I recently finished a fresh reinstall of Fedora 11 on my ASUS EeePC 1000HA today. Once I rebooted, it asked for the usual "first time user thing" and I proceeded. After that screen, I was brought to the loging manager, so I logged in, and was presented with my destkop. View 8 Replies View RelatedI decide to install F15 (other machines run F14) and after a pretty smooth install and reboot, I try to login and get the message "Oh no, something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again". But no matter how long I try, I keep getting this message. Then I go to crt-alt-F2, and try to "yum install gnome-panel". Then it shows that I don't have any network connection at all, even though I did install my network. I'm thinking of installing F14 now.

The audio is built into the mother board. It worked fine with Ubuntu 10.04 I read a few posts here and there, and ran a hardware diagnostic. It came back and said no sound card was installed.

I just downloaded the F11 x64 DVD iso, and I when I try to install it, after the media check screen, Anaconda starts it load, but it says "X failed to start, falling back to text mode" (or something like that).
The install goes through (in text mode), and all that gets installed is the basic environment.
My specs:
- AMD X2 Phenom II 550 Callisto
- 4gb DDR2 800 memory
- 1tb Samsung SATA / 100gb Western Digital SATA
- 2x XFX Geforce 9600gt 1gb
- ASRock K10N780SLIX3-WIFI motherboard
I've tried Ubuntu x86 on the same system, but I was having issues with it, so I decided to try FC11 instead.
Ok, I booted with the live cd and used Fdisk to delete all partitions and wipe the drive. I used the "Replace existing Linux system" install option and let it roll. View 11 Replies View RelatedThis, in conjunction with the "If nouveau refuses to die try" instructions, has now apparently basically trashed my fresh Fedora 12 x64 installation, which I had just set up. Another couple of hours gone to waste. I installed the package that Nokia offers as leigh123linux's build instructions last rpmbuild command persistently gave errors, restarted and was left with Nouveau showing some cryptic error message and finally being presented with only the console. Then I did the "if nouveau refuses to die try" part, foolishly figuring the nVidia driver might take over. Now I am left with watching Fedora's legacy boot animation (the loading bar) and then but one USB error message, nothing else. Looks like I'll be stuck with W7 for another while.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running F11 and am trying to replace it with a fresh install of F13, using the same partitioning layout. I downloaded the F13 i386 DVD ISO using bit torrent. (The sha256sum of my downloaded ISO matches the reference sha256sum value.) I'm trying to do the fresh install of this ISO from hard drive (without burning a DVD). Last summer I did the same procedure of installing a downloaded DVD ISO from HDD when replacing F9 with F11. The installer (Anaconda 13.42) proceeds to the point where I specify my custom partitioning layout. It then prompts me about storing a boot loader. Shortly after I reply to that, the installer gets an "unhandled exception".

The only nonstandard thing I did was the following. According to the F13 installation guide, for installation from HDD the file "install.img" from within the ISO files must be copied to a directory named "images". The F13 installation guide gives the following procedure:
mount -t iso9660 /path/to/Fedora13.iso /mnt/point -o loop,ro
cp -pr /mnt/point/images /path/images/
umount /mnt/point
Instead, I used "Archive Manager" to extract "install.img" from my DVD ISO. I copied it to a directory named "images".
I've installed F13 on a DELL computer. Everything works fine except that under KDE menu if I click on 'shutdown', I have the confirmation windows but the computer never shutdown. Same issue with the the logout button. If I want to stop my commuter I have to open a terminal and type " shutdown now" or "halt".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm totally new to Linux. Got a fresh installation of Fedora 10 x86_64 on my HP dv7-1070el notebook with previously installed Vista Ultimate 64bit. I have 2 HDDs. The OS are installed on different hard-disks. The problem: I've chosen to put the boot loader on the first sector [...] on the second HDD (/sdb5) where Fedora is installed, not on MBR /sda1 where is Vista. Now, when I reboot, it goes straight to Vista and I expected to be asked for a boot choice.
What I want is to start using Fedora and to be able to choose which OS I want to use when I start my notebook. I'm not sure I made myself clear since I'm not too familiar with all terms so please correct me so I can learn . This is what I remember from installation. Everything else went great, no installation problems. If there's no way to get the dialog of which OS I want to boot, tell me the command for booting Vista when GRUB starts.
