Ubuntu Installation :: Ethernet Connection & DHCP Renewal?

Aug 9, 2011

I just upgraded my Ubuntu Server from 10.04 to 11.04. I am having issues with the ethernet connection upon boot. The connection will blink slowly and not stay connected to the network. If I then unplug the ethernet from the switch and then replug it in, eth0 will get a steady connection, at which point I have to run the following command to get everything working.

Code:
sudo dhclient eth0
After running the command I have no issues with the ethernet connection.
lshw -C network
Code:
*-network:0

Fedora Networking :: DHCP Lease Renewal Failing On Wired Ethernet Connection?

Aug 1, 2010

I'm running an up-to-date Fedora 12 machine with the Gnome desktop (meaning with Network Manager). My network connection is a wired ethernet to a switch which then connects to a Netgear router. For some reason, this machine can't renew its leases with DHCP, so NetworkManager deactivates eth0, taking my machine off the network. I have to click Network Manager and enable eth0, which seems to work every time.

How can I fix it? Here are the relevant bits from /var/log/messages showing a failed DHCP request and then the successful renewal.

Code:
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton dhclient[12452]: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.1.1 port 67
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton dhclient[12452]: DHCPNAK from 192.168.1.1
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> (eth0): DHCPv4 state changed reboot -> expire
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> (eth0): device state change: 8 -> 9 (reason 6)
Aug 1 04:00:08 ironton NetworkManager[1261]: <info> Marking connection 'System eth0' invalid because IP configuration expired.

Ubuntu Networking :: Jaunty Server DHCP Renewal Fails Sometimes?

Jun 3, 2010

Ubuntu Jaunty Server connected via eth0 to a Billion residential ADSL router. I've locked the server MAC address to a specific IP in the router and set the DHCP renewal times to the longest possible times. For a certain number of days, the server will remain connected to the router, but then for some reason (the last time it was after about a month), the server loses it's connect and dumps into syslog the following:

Code:
Jun 2 17:10:15 defiant dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of 192.168.1.105 on eth0 to 192.168.1.254 port 67

Ubuntu Networking :: Connman Installation Breaks Ethernet Connection

May 16, 2011

I was browsing the available packages to install the weather indicator and noticed that a network indicator was available. apt-get said that it needed to install 'connman' and remove 'network-manager' and 'network-manager-gnome' in order to install the network indicator. I foolishly assumed it knew what it was doing so I went ahead and performed the installation/removal and restarted the computer.

Now I cannot connect to the internet. I only have an ethernet card for connection to the internet, no wireless or otherwise. The configuration I use is not DHCP, but a manual settings of address/subnet/gateway and name servers

When I try to set the network values through the network indicator some of them do not stay set. The gateway value appears to be set, but then after closing down the indicator window completely it comes up with the value 'Modified'. The DNS servers is the only other value that does not stay set, but it only changes to be blank. The connection never works.

So, I downloaded 'network-manager' and 'network-manager-gnome' on another computer, transferred the packages by USB, and reinstalled them (uninstalling connman and the network indicator). But the network connection remains broken. At least with 'network-manager-gnome' the values I set stay set, they just don't work anymore. I've tried editing /etc/network/interfaces to previously working values directly, but they do not seem to have any effect either. The connection no longer works.

I really do not care if I use the network indicator or not at this point, I simply want the network connection to work properly.

Edit: I realize I forgot to say that I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10). The network card is the "Integrated Broadcom 57780 Gigabit Ethernet controller".

Ubuntu Installation :: Stick With LTS Versus Renewal Of System By Upgrading

Jan 22, 2010

I am wondering, what are the merits of staying with an LTS release versus the renewal of the system by upgrading to a new release? Certainly, staying with an LTS release isn't going to be more or less dangerous than upgrading to a new release that specifically addresses security issues. With Lucid Lynx coming up this spring, should I try sticking it out until the LTS after Lynx, or keep upgrading regularly?

Networking :: Connect Using An Ethernet Card Using Dhcp ?

Feb 15, 2010

My ISP finished some 'upgrades' on its infrastructure. The result is that I am having great difficulty in connecting to the internet.

I have 3 operating systems on my box - XP, Fedora 8 and Feota 12.

I connect using an ethernet card, using dhcp. In fedora 12, the ethernet card is controlled be networkmanager. After the ISP completed their upgrades, I was not able to connect. I tried to connect manually using

Code:

There was an error message -

Code:

I read the advice here: [url], and removed all but the important lines.

But even after that neither ifup eth0 or dhclient eth0 works.

In fedora 8, the ethernet card is activated by ifup eth0 in /etc/rc.local. I was able to connect on a couple of occasions, but that too stopped working. I tried both ifup eth0, dhclient eth0, and tried to use the gui( which fires the dhclient command), but none worked.

When I use windows, it takes about 2 minutes to get an ip (earlier it was immediate). Sometimes that doesnt work and I have to click on "repair" whereupon it starts working.

Debian :: Local DHCP Server With Two Ethernet Cards

Jul 5, 2015

I recently bought a used Server (FSC RX200 S4) and set it up running Debian 7. Being used to Ubuntu, that was no big deal. It works as it should out of the box. This magic computing machine has four Network cards (eth0 - eth3). Now, I want to set it up as a multi-purpose server. On the one hand, it shall provide a Apache2 webserve, a SQL Server, a File/Streaming Server and so on. I have no problems setting up these.

On the other hand, it should work as a DHCP server in my local lan with some PCs and a printer/scanner. Until now, my cheap router did that job including to connecting me to the internet. Since I can't really set up a proper firewall with that box, I want to use my server for that.

Thats's my desired setup I want to achieve:
[] Router provides internet connection to Server
--> cable goes into eth0
[] Server therefore has a internet connection
--> Some internal magic routes the internet from eth0 to eth1 (preferably as a iptables setup) and does the Firwall & DHCP Service
--> cable goes from eth1 to a switch
--> switch connects the PCs and printer
[] PCs have internet and I can use the printer

So far so good, here's what I've come up with. I installed dnsmasq and isc-dhcp-server. I got some config files for both. I got a script to set up my iptables

Iptables script:
Code: Select all#!/bin/sh
#
# rc.firewall
# firewall with iptables ... stronger version
#
FWVER=0.88s

echo -e "
Loading STRONGER rc.firewall - version $FWVER..

[CODE].....

When starting up the services, I don't see any errors. Still, it doesn't work. My Server loses its internet connection and the PCs connected to the network are unreachable.

Ubuntu Servers :: Run A DHCP Server On Home Network To Enable PXE Booting For Ethernet Clients

Feb 27, 2010

I'm attempting to run a DHCP server on my home network to enable PXE booting for ethernet clients, but I'm having quite a few issues getting it all up and running. I'm not entirely sure what is wrong, but I keep encountering errors in syslog as follows:

Networking :: Mint Current Distro - Shut Off DHCP For A Wired Ethernet INC?

Apr 16, 2011

I recently did some troubleshooting on a USB wireless dongle hooked up to my Mint distro. I need the USB wireless to access a home DSL wireless modem out to the Internet. The wireless DSL is on 192.168.0.1

I also have a 10/100 ethernet NIC in the computer, for non-wireless connections. The wired ethernet is all 192.168.1.1. I noticed in /var/log/syslog that there are numerous "DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67" messages.

Since eth0 has a hard-coded IP, I dunno why DHCP is trying deal with it. Can I turn off DHCP activity against eth0? How to do that?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Use My DHCP Connection

Aug 20, 2010

I had my laptop at work for a few days and when I brought it home I couldn't open up web pages any more. I have a DHCP connection (shaw cable). When I plug the chord from the modem into my windows machine I can open up web pages. When I plug it into my ubuntu laptop I can't open up web pages.

I have tried unplugging the modem and restaring my computer.I think that there is some sort of connection because when I open up Network tools it shows that I am continually receiving packets. As soon as I unplug the ethernet wire I stop receiving packets. For some reason I just can't open web pages.I also tryed typing 'sudo ifconfig' and 'sudo dhclient' in a terminal. I don't fully understand what this means but I saw it in another forum.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Connection Cannot Obtain IP With DHCP

Feb 16, 2010

I have router and wireless card Linksys. Driver are installed correctly for wireless card.

Using WifiRadar I can see the access point is detected.

DHCP woks perfectly for wired lan.

However when I try to connect to the detected access point the ip addres is never retrieved and the connection never established.

I tried most of he basic instructions posted on ubuntu forums, but the problem doesn't seem to be with basic configuration: driver, essid, wep key, etc..

The problem seems to be with DHCP not able to retrieve an IP address from the DHCP server of the router. Of course the router works file with other laptops (windows based) that have wireless card.

I also tried the Network Connections setup part of ubuntu. That one shows the access point by its essid name in the list of wireless network, but when I try to connect it takes sometime and eventually asks for the wep key, which I provide and then it times out and keep asking it. The same wep key works for other pcs.
Can't figure it out. I am using ubuntu 9.10.

Some more details are the following:

1) Here the output from the log file: /var/log/wifi-radar.log

Of course it is set ... and dhcp client works for wired lan anyway.

2) diego@mysuperlaptop:/var/run$ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan [sudo] password for diego:

I tried everything I could think about in the UI windows setting (WifiRadar and Wireless Network Connections) a well in the config files from the shell. I just don't get what the deal is. I am pretty sure it is a DHCP issue but can't figure out what.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get Ethernet Connection In 10.04?

May 11, 2010

I installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter). The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. Ubuntu Networking :: DHCP Update Killed Internet Connection?

Jan 30, 2010

I've been connecting to the Internet via Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba laptop fine for ages now, but today it has stopped working. Yesterday an update came through relating to DHCP and, like all other updates, I installed it. And now my laptop can see the wireless router but it cannot connect to the Internet. (As I always install the recommended Ubuntu updates I didn't look closely at exactly what the update said, but I did see DHCP in the title, so this is why I suspect my connection is now broken.) Or can anyone tell me how to undo yesterday's update? I really wish now that Ubuntu had a utility similar to Windows System Restore.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Establish A Connection, Even Local Network Only Via DHCP?

May 25, 2011

For strange reasons I was stuck without an Internet connection for about 2 hours. I couldn't establish a connection, even local network only via DHCP. This was on Natty. After 30mins passed, I rebooted to Maverick only to get the same results. With nothing else to do, one hour after, I booted into Windows XP to play Dragon Wars 2. Lo and behold! I had Internet connection. At first I thought it was a technical problem with my ISP. So I rebooted hurriedly to Natty and after several minutes of trying to coax Network Manager for a damn fre*kin* connection it still couldn't.

Back again to XP, I couldn't believe that I wasn't experiencing some kind of on/off signal from my ISP. It wasn't just a coincidence that I could connect on XP and not on Natty. The connection was fine! And I've reason to believe for the past 2 hours, my ISP wasn't the culprit. .. this time it was on my end.Now - on Natty - I manually configured the connection (Instead of DHCP) to be greeted with the familiar Connection Established prompt from notify-OSD.

Networking :: New Ethernet Connection On Old (gutsy) Ubuntu?

Jul 23, 2010

i've just got a new broadband/wireless connection from Virgin Media and am trying to get this very old laptop online. in the past, cable connections have been easy, and wireless has given issues, but this time its the opposite. so, i have a new cable connection that is all plugged in. called customer support, they have no support for linux as usual, but they 'manually activated' the modem and thats all they can do. i am not trying to setup the wireless network yet, i'll do that with a pc later, for now i just want to plug in and go. on Network Settings, i have set the wired connection to dhcp. thats what i've done before ... not sure if i need to get static addresses from the ISP? i can go online now using the erratic but generous neighborhood free wireless.

I see a network error at the start, but it finally gets the ip address. In the dmesg, the last message repeats over and over. The machine is a Hyper-V virtual machine, but as I said...
