Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Access Root Folder / Install Drivers?

I'm completely new to ubuntu and Linux for that matter, i have a TBS 6920 dvb stat car, but have no idea how to install the drivers, i have downloaded them nd had a look at the read me file and it mentions creating a directory in root/ but cant access the root folder for some reason or other, is there anyone who can help me?? also is it possible to install through terminal instead as that would be easier no?

I have a 160gb Hard Drive, I partitioned like this:
1. First partition 16GB, ext4, mounted / I have my Lucid filesystem on this partition and boot flagged.
2. Second partition 112GB (extended- 110gb as /home, and 2gb as swap memory)

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?

I want to enable the desktop effects (such as smooth minimising, smooth viewport switching, etc) but it says that "Desktop effects are not supported on your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them anyway?"
My first question is how do I check to make sure whether the NVIDIA drivers are enabled or not? (I know they're on the system, since 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' is in the list of applications).
My second question is how do I activate these drivers?
Note that I don't have root access, since I'm using a university machine, so I can't edit the xorg.conf or anything like that.

Before, the "sudo cp -r" command automatically set the permissions to make the directory / files can be accessed by others.
But, after I reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 and apply all the latest updates, "sudo cp -r" command set the files to be accessible by root only.
After I copy the codecs directory to /usr/lib by using the above command, not only I cannot view the files inside, SMPlayer and other player software cannot access the directory.
To fix this, I have to run the chmod command to change the permissions.
Does anyone face this problem? Was it caused by the installation of latest updates?

I then installed Chromium OS on my EeePC 1000HE with internet through a wired connection. All was great until I unplugged and realized that the wireless did not work. I have spent more hours than I am willing to admit at this point trying to get it to work. I found the drivers and firmware but would get messed up in the process with my little knowledge with installing them.I then installed Ubuntu on my netbook and the wireless worked just fine right after install. So now, I have a working copy of Ubuntu on one SD card and a copy of Chromium on another SD card without wireless capability.
My question:
Is there a way that I can copy the drivers and firmware folder from Ubuntu and put it into Chromium? I am familiar with navigating around at command prompt and mounting the USB drive that I would like to have the drivers and firmware folders copied to.I believe I know the location of both drivers and firmware, but since I am so new to this.Once those folders are copied into place, do I need to do anything else to get them to work?

I really want to drop Windows, but wireless connectivity and frequent crashes are really discouraging me. I have a dual-boot W XP with Ubuntu 10.10. I do not have the computer on, so I'm writing this from my weak memory
USB Adapter - Netgear WNDA3100-100NAS = v2
The adapter works under W XP with no problems
The router, Linksys WRT54G sees the adapter in the dhcp table
lsusb lists the adapter.
I have copied the drivers from the install CD onto the desktop. I cannot figure out how to install or access those drivers for the installation. I tried to install the ndiswrapper from the software center, but the center shows it's available from the "main" source. I've looked in the package manager, but can't find it. When I go into terminal, and enter one of the suggested commands in the forums, it can't be located. I have a Belkin F5D8010 installed on this computer, and it works great under W XP. I want to try to get this installed, but until I can figure out installation of the ndiswrapper and how to access it, and get the drivers recognized, I'm at a standstill.

I'm still running 9.10, but now would like to install 10.10. Now I'm wondering about how to keep access to my encrypted home folder.
Usually, I don't do an 'upgrade', but a fresh re-install. I have a separate /home partition, so normally this works just fine. However, my home directory is encrypted (a feature that was introduced with 9.10, I believe).
So, if I whack the system partition and do a fresh reinstall there, will the new install still be able to read my home directory? Or do I need to save a key file from somewhere?

So, my company has a new web-based VPN client. I go to a specified URL, log in, and then a Java widget starts and tries to install some stuff. I get this screen:
It's asking me for my root password. I know how to set the root password, but I want to avoid that and use sudo instead. But as you can see from the image, the install is initiated in such a way as to prevent me from doing anything but entering my root password. And apparently my sudo/admin password isn't the same as my root password, because it doesn't work. And I can't access the executable from any other way. Is logging in as root briefly my only option here?

i upgraded my ubuntu 9.10(karmic) to ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) by executing the commands " apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade" one at a time in terminal after finishing upgrade ,i restarted my system, after restarting i can't access GUI (interface) in UPGRADED version ,it prompts me to terminal interface. how to enable proprietary drivers.., about enabling proprietary drivers! and also i used startx command it prompts me to gui but i can't access my keyboard and mouse or any other input devices.

I'm using ubuntu server 9.10 for a home build NAS. Everything is working great just have one more thing to figure out. I have Samba set up to access my files and I set up a recycle feature so anything deleted will get moved to a Recycled folder. (I learned this the hard way after hitting delete key by accident while browsing the shares in windows. Lost 100 GB of data)
Now it is for the most part working but the permissions on folders isn't getting set right. If I delete a file in a share I can go to Recycle bin folder and delete the file for good. But if I delete a folder I can not access that folder to delete or restore from the Recycle bin folder. I have to chmod the folder before I can do anything with it. Anything I can change to get folders deleted via windows to have the right permissions when it is moved to the Recycle bin folder?

I just upgraded to Fedora 12 on my computer. Now I can't connect to the net. Under network I show the two connections (neither working). The "connect" and "disconnect" AND the "delete" buttons are all grayed out (?). I also can't log in as root to try to gain more access. Probably just a new way of doing things. I was upgrading from F7 so it was a bit of a jump.
Does the network utility work differently from 7? Am I now rootless? It would seem that my wifi card sees the net as I can see the routers out there, but can't connect. I'm sure I'm using the correct WEP.

I installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?

I want to give a mounted folder /mnt/folder access so that 'root and the group test have read write access' and all other users have read access I understand most of the chmod command, the users groups world etc but where in the 'command' do you specify which 'group' or 'user' you are giving the read / write access to? in all the tutorials i've seen no where do you specify the actual group or user.

I was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running,figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.

So far I've tried gOS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and SuZE. The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

I have a friends PC which had XP installed and onto which he installed Koala. I don'y know much about it but it seems that there is an ubuntu directory in the XP filesystem in which there is a 16gb file named root disk.The machine can no longer boot in either xp or unbuntu but I can put the hardrive elswhere and copy files. Is there anyway to access the contents of root disk which is obviously the root filesystem of his former unbuntu install?
