Jan 27, 2011
How do I install files from anywhere. I have some in my downloads folder and I cannot figure out how to get them installed.Also I have no sound in LInux, I have onboard sound that works great in windows, but not here, my sound did show up in hardware of the system/preferences/sound (but no actual sound) unitl: I have asked this question before and I got some suggestions of a couple of things to install and I installed them now my card does not even show up. I have Linux sound drivers on my motherboard cd, but linux will not even read the cd.

I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.

I am attempting to migrate from Mandriva to Ubuntu and attempted to install the 11.04 and 10.04 CD distos on a 7-year old computer (Elite Group L7VMM3 motherboard, 1.4 ghz AMD Duron, 1.2GB RAM, 40GB IDE HDD).
The 11.04 installation CD makes it through the HD partitioning (erase everything), Computer name, time zone, and keyboard detection, but hangs after starting the "Copying files" stage of the install. The progress bar stops just below the in "Copying files...".
The 10.04 installation CD makes it through the "Installing the base system", "Retrieving console-terminus" with the progress bar stalled at 6%. Although the computer is old, Vista successfully installs on it.

I just tried to install kubuntu 6 times on my laptop. I have downloaded the file from a different mirror each time and burned the image via brasero. This used to work for me... Kubuntu will not install. Keeps saying its skipping missing files or something. Anyone else getting this? I eventually gave up on 9.10 and am now trying alpha 1...

I ran 'sudo apt-get install python', which completed successfully. According to [url, this should have created the directory /usr/lib/python2.6, but I do not see any such directory.
This is causing problems:
I've tried 'apt-get purge python' and then reinstalling but this has not resolved the issue.

I have tftpd-hpa and dhcp3-server up and running. I just want to install server edition via network, from the host machine (my laptop, running ubuntu 9.10) with an ISO file (ubuntu 8.04 32-bit server edition). I managed to boot the client machine with pxe-netboot technique, but instead downloading all the files from internet, I need to do this process directly from ISO. To transfer ISO from host to client, I also installed Apache. I unpacked ISO file into /var/lib/tftpboot/server/. I created a link to the Apache root: /var/www
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/var/www$ ls
returns => index.html server
server folder is the place where I unpacked the ISO.
My dhcp3-server has this setup and it works well with netboot, but I don't know how to add Apache to the formula to transfer the iso file from host to client. Firewall is disabled. This is my edited /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf file.
Code:
host pxeinstall {
hardware ethernet 00:06:29:DE:E3:CD;
fixed-address 192.168.2.4; (client IP)
next-server 192.168.2.2; (host IP)
filename "/server/install/netboot/pxelinux.0"; (relative to tftpboot)
} subnet 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.2.2 192.168.2.5;
option routers 192.168.2.1; }
When I pxe-boot the client, the process comes to a halt when tftp server is trying to access to pxelinux.0 file. I got thls error:
PXE-T00: Permission denied
PXE-E36: Error received from TFTP server
I have no experience with Apache... so I think there is a problem with my IP addresses.. Do I need to use 127.0.1.1 instead of 192.168.2.1 (my routers IP)?

I am having serious trouble getting Debian to install over our LAN using PXE/syslinux, a custom preseed.cfg, and the files from the DVD on a webserver. I think the problem is using the files from the DVD on the webserver instead of a mirror, but I believe this should be possible. I do not have enough space on the webserver to house an entire debian mirror.

I am trying to install Debian over Kali since in order to use steam, newest version of wine and a few other things causes a change reaction that would require about two-thirds of my main os re-written with non kali files which makes me a little uneasy.
I have downloaded the debian-live-7.8.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso from torrent from the link from debian download listings at debian.org. and I put it on a 8gb flash drive formated with gparted to a bootable fat32 partition and is listed as being /dev/sdc I installed the iso to the drive uss dd using the following code
Code: Select allsudo dd if=debian-live-7.8.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M; sync
now it boots to the flash drive just fine with only the gnome3 drivers loaded by the live os isn't fully functional with my system. Ie. when I log into any of the live modes it gives me a message that it was switched to gnome3 [fallback] I am using the current version of gnome3 desktop manager installed from source on kali with out any trouble.
Also when I click the graphical installer or the installer modes from the grub i get a background image with some sort of artifiacts in the top inchish of the screen then everything but the mouse freezes. But when I go into one of the live modes and click the installer in their it opens just fine but when it starts transferring files it says that it couldn't transfer files from the cd after all the language and localization screens at the beginning.
I did find a misc page on the internet involving a cruchbang with the same problem [URL] I went to the folder in the usb drive in question and it looks like since that was originally post something has changed or it could have been a crunchbang format.
So basically I am asking did I do a step wrong should I try a different way of instillation, or do I have a corrupted image? also I am unable to use disk media due to the type of drives and disks I have access to.

I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

I have made a Debian minimal installer on a USB drive according to this manual: [URL] I have installed a minimal version of Debian, meaning text-only, with only the kernel, shell, filesystem, and a few programs. Now I need to install the rest of it over the internet. So here are my questions:
1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?

I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.

Recently I did a wget for DreamLinux 4beta6.3, which I now cannot burn to a disk. Another issue with linux in general being just a hobby. Why could a dev not set it up where you could just wget the upgrades for the main distro files themselves ?? We already do this when upgrading the apps, so why not the distro? Why could you not start at alpha, and just slap do a rolling upgrade into rc and beyond?
I understand the potential stability issues, but why can't we ghost the drive and hence have a backup on hand and then do this as outlined, and hence do a single install from alpha the distro's grave? I am wasting four months on "Setting Up" each install, only to wind up reinstalling again. This happens in every variation I have come across. Even in stable versions, the rolling upgrade just craps the install, and the major do overs hijacks all my data.

I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.
Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.

I'm new to openSUSE, this is the first time i try to install openSUSE version 11.4. on my IBM Thinkpad T43 (on which SUSE Linux version 8.0 has been running before without problems). I have downloaded the ISO images and successfully burned the ISO images on a blank DVD. Having placed my openSUSE DVD in the drive and rebooted my laptop I can see the boot screen.
I then select installation with arrow up/down and press enter. Choosing language and keyboard layout works fine, as well as accepting the license agreement. However, when it comes to 'System Probing' the installation stops at 'Search for system files'. The cursor shows a little turning disk but the rest of the screen is blocked.

I recently upgraded from FC12 to FC14 due to errors using yum and rpm. I keep running into mirror sites with RPM files that don't install. These site have what appear to be valid RPM files, but if I use wget to retrieve the file and run "file" on it, it turns out to be an HTML file. I understand the fact that if a file is corrupted, it won't install, but I can open these "RPM" files using Mozilla after changing the extension from RPM to HTML. When I open the new HTML file, I'm prompted by the browser to open or save the RPM file. If I save the RPM file pointed to by the HTML file, I can download and install it using rpm -ivvh unless a dependency check fails. how does anyone install using yum if the package is an HTML file with an RPM extension. Here is a link as an example:
[URL]
If I use wget on this file and then run "file" on it, here is the output:
file openoffice.org-calc-core-3.3.0-20.2.fc14.i686.rpm
openoffice.org-calc-core-3.3.0-20.2.fc14.i686.rpm: HTML document text
If I change the extension of this file to HTML and open it with my browser, I am prompted to download the RPM file which turns out to be a true RPM v3.0 file. Is anyone else having this problem or can anyone point me in the right direction to download the correct RPM file. I am running behind a proxy server and have installed cntlm, configured wgetrc, yum.conf and .curlrc to use the proxy server. I am able to download and install most of the simpler applications where the dependencies are either installed or non required.

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have
Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)
I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.
