I want to upgrade my 9.10 from Wubi to a full install (my 30 gigs is almost filled) without losing my files and settings(like my panel apps and options). but how?
View 2 RepliesI was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.
I been using ubuntu wubi on my gateway notebook for a few months now and I am ready to clean windows all my computer and only use ubuntu. the question is do I have to reinstall everything from the ground up?? can someone please give me some tips! it will take me weeks to setup everything again

Or would it be better to partition the disk, and just install Ubuntu, then deal with the MBR issue (been a while since I had a normal install, maybe the boot problems are gone?)? And is there any actual advantage to doing a stand alone install, while still dual booting Windows? Is there any gain from it versus the WUBI install I am running now?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhat is the easiest and/or safest way to migrate my Wubi 10.04 install to a full install? Currently, my Dell XPS M1530 is currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've decided after using Windows a total of around 4 hours over the past 6 months that I can probably let it go. So, I don't need Windows anymore and I believe I'm ready for a full install of Ubuntu. Though, I probably will wait for 11.04 to come out first.
A few ways I've thought of already are: 1) Find an external hard drive to put the Wubi files on. 2) Upload files to an storage website. 3) Temporarily put the Wubi files onto another computer (Windows). All these meaning I would then wipe my harddrive and install Ubuntu from a CD. And by "files", I mean Documents, Pictures, Downloads, etc.
EDIT: deleting all my applications, because OpenOffice.org won't reinstall on my computer due to dependency issues while attempting to install LibreOffice. So a fresh install would be nice.
Having read several threads and received excellent previous advice there are just a couple of points I want to check please before proceeding on laptop. I want to upgrade to 11.4 from 11.2. My disk setup is as follows:-
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15505 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x462d462c

If I select existing /home root and swap partitions, format root but prevent formatting of /home and use a different user ID I believe that will leave my existing data intact and will allow me to trial new os. Is this correct approach? If all goes well and when I have new system working correctly, what is best way make old user id date accessible. Can I simply create my old id on new system and will that allow me to access data when I log on with that id?
Second question; at present I have the ability to boot to openSUSE, OS/2 and windoze. (It used to be done entirely by Boot Manager but during my last Linux installation I messed this up a bit so now machine boots to grub and this offers all three operating systems but chain loads Boot Manager if I select OS/2)
When I do the new installation what should I select to retain this setup so that I still have access to windoze and OS/2 but when selecting linux have new 11.4 system run.
i have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.
I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?
Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?
I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.
I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).
There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.
I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.
Is there anyone who can suggest if :
1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?
2. Any other way I can do this ??
When Ubuntu 10.10 is release is it better to do upgrade or full install? I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows and 9.04 in a dedicated partition on my HP DV1000 (32bit), and I would like to boot to a 10.04 Live CD to make sure that everything will work with the upgrade. But, no matter what I try (unetbootin USB, Linux Mint, CDs of both) I can't get the machine to boot to anything other than the HD.
I did a wubi installation of 10.04 on a Compaq CQ laptop and ran into the same problem. I went into the BIOS on both machines and I think I tried all the different settings, but no go. I must be missing something. Is working through the BIOS the only way to get one's machine to boot from a usb or optical drive, or is there another trick to it?
I am using wubi since last 2 months. Now i am planning to install ubuntu lynx on my partition. Question is, can i install it and overwrite wubi's / folder to my hard drive to get all my programs and settings?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.

1) Will this install in the Wubi directory? (c://ubuntu) or do i have to partition it first? If i do, please tell me a link how because the one i followed on the wiki said it didn't support 10.04 wubi. I would prefer to upgrade the Wubi install though
2) Will upgrading remove any of my user files? I installed themes i want to keep, and i wouldn't want to loose them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just updated my ubuntu 10.10 installation inside windows (wubi) and after that I shut down my computer. Later on I switched it on again and was unable to boot ubuntu. Ususally I first get the 'Windows boot menu' and after i select ubuntu i get the grub menu. Now, when I select ubuntu in the windows boot menu I dont get grub after that but instead the computer restarts. Is there any way to fix this issue without reinstalling ubuntu.

It downloaded all the updates, but reported that due to some problem, only a partial upgrade will be possible. I agreed. And now, when I select Ubuntu from the startup OS list, it just shows a blank screen and restarts within 3-5 seconds. What do I do??

Now I want to experience the full potential of Ubuntu by creating another partition just for Ubuntu alone since I heard Wubi makes a lot of trouble and works slower than independent Ubuntu install.
Here's my question. Should I really create another partition to get full potential of Ubuntu or should I stick with wubi? I haven't got any problem running Ubuntu with Wubi but my video playback sometimes gone haywire which didn't happen in windows especially .mkv files
If I should create a partition, how do I want to shrink Drive C: to get enough free space for another partition? Mine was Windows XP so it doesn't have shrink option in Disk Managament unlike Vista/7.
And last question... Can Ubuntu run Window games or MMORPG smoothly like Counter Strike and WarcraftIII? I did try to play it before but it run too slower in Ubuntu. I used Netbook Eee PC 900HA, 2GB RAM, dual-boot Windows XP Home Edition with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 Lucid Lnyx LTS.
I installed Koala 9.10 with Wubi, and have liked it enough to give it a "native" installation on a partition. I've been looking around at forums, and it seems the most attractive way, with LVPM, hasn't been tested officially with 9.10, and I can't find a post of anyone that has.
So, my question is, does anyone know the best way to upgrade my install to its own partition? My drive currently has 2 primary partitions (main Windows Vista OS, and a recovery) and one extended with a logical drive. I don't know whether to try the LVPM method, or try to just uninstall Wubi and install 9.10 after from the Live CD. But, the reason I went the Wubi route in the first place was the install/Live CD would hang when I got to the screen with the options to check the install disk (I had previously checked the hash, and it was fine), proceed without changing disk, etc. I think that is a problem with the install getting confused with my multiple drives/card readers, and not being able to find the correct one. Wubi had a similar problem giving me something like "please insert disk into drive X:", and I would have to just click over and over, each time X changing from one drive letter/number to the next, until the install just continued when it found the right drive.
I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.
I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.
Computer: Dell Hybrid 140G, Intel Core 2 Duo T5800, 4GB RAM
I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?
I want to upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 installed through Wubi to 11.04. Now, Windows doesn't work. I can't upgrade Ubuntu by it because it is impossible to download files. Can I upgrade it without connecting Ubuntu to the Internet and starting Windows?

I have a Nvidia 8400GS, running SuSe 11.1, kernel 2.6.27.45-0.1.1,, Nvidia Drivers 193.5, KDE 3.??. It seems like about every third or fourth time I boot up I have to rebuild and install the Nvidia drivers (the hard way). When I get up and running again, use the Nvidia Control panel and save the settings to Nvidiaxxxxxxx.RC file. Why does this keep happening, any suggestions or threads that might answer this problem?? Also I can't get my wallpapers to fill the desktop, they are tiled sometimes and I can't change them. One other thing is I am having trouble with the screensavers, they won't start, and I like to delete some of them?

My home partition is sda7 (ext4), so in the partition step during the install I'm telling the installer to use the partition as ext4 but don't format it (I'm explicitly checking sda6 as / mount point and set to format as ext4).
On the next step I see disabled options regarding the access to my home folder and "Require my password to log in and decrypt my home folder" is checked.
My current home partition is not an encrypted partition, so I am not sure of what will happen. I just want it to mount it and access it as Ext4, not encrypt it.
I also have a Private folder in my home partition, what will happen to it? Will I be able to mount it afterwards?
I am trying to upgrade to 9.10 but it fails because the disk is full. I am running a Dell Mini with 16GB SSD...so there isn't a lot of free space to begin with. Added to that, I have some hefty applications (rosegarden, audacity, skype, etc) which I kind of need. Am I better off just sticking to 9.04? Are there any good ways to clean up the system and get rid of stuff that might be sticking around? I did apt-get clean and it didn't clean enough.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI got the BSOD on Windows 7 and I was unable to fix it at all. But I had already installed Ubuntu on my computer a while ago with a wubi installation. I look and saw other form posts/ tutorials online and ever time I follow them the error I end up getting is hard drive already mounted. Is this because I am already on that hard drive by running Ubuntu or is it because of a bsod error. Also what will happen if I force unmount my hard drive? Basically I want my files from the windows portion so I can move them then too a portable hard drive and factory reset my whole computer.
