I noticed in my system that my root partition is getting full. I found a lot of old compacted syslogfiles. Had a look at etc/sysconfig editor eg cron but could not find a setting which allows to delete files older than a month. Where and how could I influence this ? I deleted manually all syslog files older than a month. Approx 6GB

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 60GB partition with / and home on it. I logged on yesterday and it gave me a warning saying that I had only 1.9 GB of disk space left. I ignored it for a day and assumed that i had too many videos and pics.But the next day i had not added any files or downloaded any software but i had 0B left. I used the disk usage analyser and found that 33GBs came from /var/log. It was from two log files. syslog and daemon.log 16.5GB each!! I opened them up and i found that this line of text was repeated hnundreds of thousands of times.

Can syslog be used to "watch" other log-Files from other software? I would like to get an info in messages if a logfile of squid is changed/something is added.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently using Syslog-NG to make the log files in the format of: $R_YEAR$R_MONTH$R_DAY$R_HOUR and I need to be a little more granular.
I am wondering if there is a way to to divide the hour by 12, making a new log file every 5 minutes. We have been using LogRotate, but when Syslog-NG is restarted we have some data loss. Is this possible? Another solution I can think of would be to add $R_MINUTE (or whatever it is) and run a cron job every 5 minutes to concatenate the files.

What i'm trying to accomplish seems rather silly but is needed for my little project here.
I'm using OpenSuSE 11.2 as a media center PC and need it to login automatically(console not X). That one i accomplished without problems.
However, after login i can see all the info about the services that were started and that needs to "go away".
One could do a "clear" in the .bash_rc and or .bash_profile but it will still show the login prompt which i don't want to see either (i don't even want to see the blinking cursor as well).
Question: How do i accomplish that so that the login console shows only the "splash screen" without any output of the kernel,rc.status nor the "issue-file"... just a plain blank screen ?
Recently I had to login to OS 11.3 via tty, but was unable to. Tty screen was flooded with syslog output. Instead of outputting info only on tty10 it was throwing it on every tty (1-6), I switched to.
How to fix this behaviour and restrict syslog output only to tty10?
I'm new to openSUSE, this is the first time i try to install openSUSE version 11.4. on my IBM Thinkpad T43 (on which SUSE Linux version 8.0 has been running before without problems). I have downloaded the ISO images and successfully burned the ISO images on a blank DVD. Having placed my openSUSE DVD in the drive and rebooted my laptop I can see the boot screen.
I then select installation with arrow up/down and press enter. Choosing language and keyboard layout works fine, as well as accepting the license agreement. However, when it comes to 'System Probing' the installation stops at 'Search for system files'. The cursor shows a little turning disk but the rest of the screen is blocked.
I am thinking about installing rsyslog using yum, but I only want to try it out first and don't want to create conflicts and problems that will be hard to revert. When I ask yum on CentOS 5 about rsyslog, I get this (note much older version - it's too bad that even the latest STABLE rsyslog isn't in the repository):

I had been copying "vmkd" files all of which are very large (11gig) each and later deleted them and it appears some I had deleted using "root" I reached a point when it couldn't do it and it said it couldn't because trash bin was full. Sure enough I found my root partition (20gigs) was full. I went root and emptied its trash bin which freed up about (4gigs) of space. I just set up a new system (11.2) on another drive and have setup it up with exactly the same programs as the system I'm having a problem with and the new systems root partition only has (6gigs) in the root partition. Question; how do I clean out my problem root partition?

the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?

The thing is that if i restart my syslog-ng server and login with ssh, it logs it. but when i login again it dont. But if i restart the syslog-ng daemon again it logs again, but only once.

I installed syslog-ng-3.0.3-1.rhel5.i386.rpm and at first blush it appears to be working fine to /var/log/messages. However it doesn't seem to be doing any other ancillary logging as defined in syslog-ng.conf (I've had to mod /etc/init.d/syslog-ng to look in /etc). e.g.

filter f_filter3 { facility(authpriv); };
log { source(s_sys); filter(f_filter3); destination(d_auth); };
I'm using a syslog-ng.conf which has served me well in the past (v1.6.9 on fedora).
So I was installing the latest Blackberry plug-in for Eclipse on my Aspire One with it's massive EIGHT gigabyte SSD, and I ran out of space. The plug-in failed to complete installation, but it kept all of the files on my computer - I went from 2 free gigs to 400 free MB. Eclipse doesn't recognize the plug-in so there is no option to uninstall it. This is just my travel computer, so it's no big deal to reinstall Ubuntu and get all the updates again, but I'd rather not do that.
