Ubuntu Installation :: Failed To Install Key Applications / Files
Jun 14, 2010
I have installed Lucid 10.04 server on an IBM eserver 325 dual boot with 2003. the cd rom drive on the server is starting to go out and the install worked but failed to install key applications and files. For examle- no VIM (just VI) and the apt sources.list file had one entry- the cd rom. I need to update all the packages necessary for the system to operate fully. ( I have tons of broken dependencies when trying to install SSHserver, Samba and other apps) I manually entered the muliverse and universe repositories in sources.list but this is not resolving the issues with the missing dependencies. I can get a new cd-rom drive but it will certainly take a week or two to get and I need to get this project going. I have some experience with Linux, but not enough to know if there is a magic command that I don't know.

So I was installing the latest Blackberry plug-in for Eclipse on my Aspire One with it's massive EIGHT gigabyte SSD, and I ran out of space. The plug-in failed to complete installation, but it kept all of the files on my computer - I went from 2 free gigs to 400 free MB. Eclipse doesn't recognize the plug-in so there is no option to uninstall it. This is just my travel computer, so it's no big deal to reinstall Ubuntu and get all the updates again, but I'd rather not do that.

I just recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop and was attempting to install Wine on it this morning. I went through the proper procedure listed on the site, but once I get back to the Software Center and hit "install" it gives me an error a second later saying "Failed to Download Package Files. Check your Internet connection."

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.
So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.
So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...
So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!
If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

I downloaded latest Ubuntu version 10. I bruned it to CD disc. I run WUBI.exe. Some files copied to the hard drive, but the error message interrupted in the middle of the installation process. It said unable to install -- permission denied. I don't see what is wrong. My Windows XP is full administration control. All the files should be able to write to drive c without any problem. What is the cause? Could files in ISO image be corrupted?

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

Is there any way that i can install applications on any location (directory /partition) ? If we keep the installation file on other drive and just keep the link of that file/folder on root directory (/usr /bin /usr/sahre) then we can save our space of root directory. I found several times that my root partition is full after installing some applications. It is so painful to shrink or reallocation of root partition. Maybe this procedure of software installation will be helpful for the people who are already created low spaced root partition.

I'm going round everyone I know installing Ubuntu on their computers whether they like it or not, and I must say so far they all like it except. I have to spend 5 hours downloading and installing all the software they need to make their system run 'as good as windows'.
I really need a whole bunch of popular programmes to put on a disk and install as I go. I know Ubuntu saves the downloads in a repository on the hard drive, but looking at it I am sometimes at a loss as to which folders contain which downloads, then there is the problem of multiple folders for one programme etc.or point me in the direction of a zipped up file with all the programmes a normal user might need.

I have a problem in my Ubuntu box. The applications defined in "Startup applications" fail to start. On another user's account, everything works fine. I think that's some configuration problem. Where are the data of of the startup applications stored? (i suppose it's .xx file that I could just delete to restore defaults)

Installed Debian Lenny on a Pentium 3 with 256 MB of ram and a 10GB hard drive. Used the "Expert Graphical" from the install menu. I did not choose any software packages when prompted from the list (the list with the checkboxes next to server, desktop ECT) because I wanted to choose individual packages to install afterwards. Had no issues, computer rebooted and I got to a login prompt.
Logged in as root, I ran "apt-get install" and installed gedit, blackbox from my main window manager, gdm, iceweasel and synaptic (some of these I installed after editing the sources.list file with more repositories.)
All of this is great, even though this computer is old.. I have a nice box to do internet browsing and IRC.
Here is what I do not understand, and I have never seen before in Linux. When I try to install Open Office, synaptic package manager says it "needs to uninstall iceweasel" browser and a few other files and programs. Also this happens if I try to install VLC player. Looks like the reasoning is because some applications are not compatible with others. Is this new? Again, I have never seen this before in Linux.

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

I have just finished installing Karmic on new computer. I have already installed java jre, flash plugin, and unrar/rar. My question is can I still install restricted extras to get addition applications installed, without corrupting my apps already installed? Or should I just manually install the remaining items from restricted extras manually?

I managed to install OpenIms and XLite, and then I tried to log in using Bob and Alice usernames, but it doesn't work.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 = Kubuntu.
I tried everything I found on Google (changing security settings in HSS and scscf to Digest-MD5 was the last thing I did), but nothing worked.
Is there any log file that I can open and see because I have no idea what the problem is, I don't get any errors, it's just like the user doesn't exists? I don't know is there some problem with MySql or something else.

I was trying to install a RAR extractor called Peazip (http://peazip.sourceforge.net/) I selected the 64-bit package (I run Lucid) and went for it. Everything extracted ok, and the package met all requirements. However, during the installation process, it hung. No movement. I closed out of the installation, and restarted, to attempt a second try.
Now, when I try to install anything:
Code:

I tried installing the 32 bit version of ubuntu 10.04 on his machine. I gave him 5 gigs of swap and 3 gigs in boot. It worked fine for two days and on the third day he tried to boot up his machine and got the message "primary drive 1 not found, secondary drive 1 not found" and the boot loader never appeared. He waited for a while and eventually the ubuntu splash screen appeared with five red dots, and after a moment of that the screen went totally dark. After "a very long time" (in his words) the desktop appeared but his desktop toolbars never appeared. The one folder on his desktop did appear. He "couldn't do anything" and eventually shut it down.

I'am using gentoo linux. After some system's updates VirtualBox stoped loading any virtual machine with error:

I do not have knowledge of ubuntu Nvidia drivers etc. because my previous installations (ie. 9.04) worked OK. I do not have a dual boot HDD, just a clean install.
By the way, I can upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 using the add/remove thing & everything works.

I installed 9.10 on a Vista 64-bit PC with AMD64 dual core. I have 3 hard drives. 1 x partitioned in to 2 for Vista and its appluications on the other partition. I have another hard drive partitioned with one for documents and the other for Ubuntu OS. The 3rd hard drive was for future backup....
I started to install Ubuntu 10.4 with the Update Manager. It got to the stage where it had just finished downloading the new files.when suddenly, I assume as it started the install, all hell broke loose and it crashed. At first I could restart the machine and could see I had lost system info: there were no "SHUT DOWN", "Network" and other buttons and notifcation tablets on the ribbon. The Update Manage was missing bits too.
It did suggest "re try" but that would not work. I then tried Symnaptics and did a "fix broken items". It found over 90, but could not install them. Then it stopped working all together. I can not gain access. It did break Vista too but I managed to get that up and running again, but I have files on the desktop, the Evolution eMail has vast amounts of stuff and I would like to keep the settings in Firefox.. I have tried using the 9.10 CD to fix but if I go in as "trial" and use the update manager or Synaptics it can not complete the install, it says out of memory.
I am happy to reload the OS, either one, but how do I do it without destroying my valuable data..I have two machines I have been working on and neither have worked! See other thread.

I downloaded and burned the iso at 12x speed and configured the BIOS so that the computer would boot from a CD. I ran the Live CD and everything seemed to be fine until i was informed that the installation had failed because of problems with my hard drive. But worst was to come when i reconfigured the BIOS so as to boot from the hard drive and all i got was a completely blank screen. I don't have a Ubuntu 10.04 Live cd handy so i have to use a different distro's live cd just to get on line.

I downloaded the 32-bit iso from the Ubuntu website. I followed all of the instruction given on [url]. I went into my BIOS settings and set it to boot from the USB. A black screen came up and first showed me a line of copyright information. On the next line it said "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue". Then on the third line it repeated the same thing "Boot failed: please change disks and press a key to continue".
I'm using a Dell Latitude D610 laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. The USB I'm using is eight gigabytes, was manufactured by Toshiba, and has absolutely nothing on it except for the stuff that needs to be on there to install Ubuntu.

I cannot boot into either OS. Grub failed on install. How to boot back in to windows. From live Ubuntu CD I can see that all files are there, however it shows the disk to be unrecognized and unallocated. There is an X by the root folder of my C; drive. Windows recovery console can't fix it, windows install can't fix it, and windows repair can't fix it. I guess I need to reconfigure my boot drive properties to recognize the ntfs; I don't know what to do. I would like to boot back in to windows partition the drive correctly and start over , is this possible?

I just did a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on a system with multiple older versions of Ubuntu already installed. There was a dpkg error during the install with no useful information provided, otherwise the install completed normally. When I rebooted, the old grub2 ran and presented my old boot menu. When I mounted the 10.04 partition to see what was there, I found that /boot/grub/ was empty and /boot/initrd.img was missing. The other boot files were present.

HDD with four partitions: Three DOS bootable primary partitions are located in the head, and the residual extended partition is divided into several logical drives.
1st trial: 10.04 installer recognized the last largest logical drive for system installation, but installer truncated the extended partition, and created the "terrible" 5th primary partition at the end of the HDD. GParted and other utilities cannot access to this 5th primary partition. (So, I restored the lost partition table on the HDD manually by MBM. But several OS were broken.)
2nd trial: To avoid making this "terrible" 5th primary partition, I located the largest logical drive for installation at not of the end.10.04 installer recognized this logical drive, but failed again.I tried GParted. but also failed to formating to ext4.Maybe, 10.04 installer failed at this formating step. Logical drives are not supported in 10.04 ?
