Ubuntu Installation :: Hanging After First Reboot?

Sep 20, 2010

There's a strange problem, after installing ubuntu 10.04.1 using wubi.

The installation goes fine in Windows, unpacks to an empty 15gb ntfs partition. After restarting to complete the installation, it would'n find the grldr but fixed that by copying over the wubi* files installed in C:.

Now the problem, the boot screen shows for a few seconds, switches to the default ubuntu wallpaper, the mouse cursor is there and working, and that's it. The installation doesn't continue, the keyboard won't work; Also I've tried all the additional options the installation offers when it asks to press Esc.

The system:
Wubi installed size: 15gb
32bit Ubuntu 10.04.1
4gb installed ram
nVidia 9800gx2

Using ubuntu for a month on my netbook determined me to add it to my desktop so I hope this gets fixed

Ubuntu :: Hanging Desktop Sometimes - Requires A SYSREQ Reboot To Restart It

May 11, 2011

Any time i try to start my computer from a cold state (off for 1+ hours), the first time i start it, it hangs and requires a SYSREQ reboot to restart it. When it hangs, all the window decorations disappear and the background vanishes. The main menu opens, but click on things does nothing. clicking shutdown only brings up the normal shutdown window with the text replaced with squares.

Thought it was my hdd (i/o errors and for some reason the HDD remounts r/o at this point), but e2fsck shows no issue.

Thought it may be an IRQ conflict, so i enabled MSI on all my PCI Devices.

Thought it was the 'green' aspect of my WD Drive, so i set the spindown time to 5 hours using hdparm config file. startup messages printed to screen confirm it is working.

Also, due to the numerous hard resets, the system is detecting a 'previous i/o error to the superblock'. Should recovering the SB from a backup be beneficial?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Hanging At Purple Screen?

May 5, 2010

My problem is with the new Ubuntu 10.04 Installer, and the Plymouth Bootloader.

I have installed Ubuntu plenty of times before on my hardware setup, so 10.04 shouldn't be significantly different, however I can't seem to get it to go past the purple screen with the red dots.

If i let it sit there for a while, then press an arrow key, it takes me to the text which is as follows:

Code:

Fedora Installation :: F13 Is Hanging On Boot

Jun 11, 2010

I've been having trouble with my desktop ever since I upgraded from F 11 to F 13 last night. Finally, however, I got the proper version of the nVidia drivers installed. However, it's stopped completing boot. I've edited grub at boot to get it to show the boot messages and find that the last thing it reports is success in registering the binary for Windows applications. After that, it just sits there, doing nothing. I can go to an alternate console an d log in, but that's all.

If I log in and run startx, it fails. It reports that it was unable to load the nvidia module and "no screens found." Does anybody know what I should do next?I've removed both kmod-nvidia and akmod and am going strictly with the nouveau drivers.I've booted, used Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a console, logged in as root and run the setup program to configure X to run that way, then returned to the main console and logged in as myself. Shortly after my wallpaper shows up, and long before I have a working desktop, it goes white and stays that way. Aside from getting a different video card (The old one worked Just Fine right up until I upgraded.) what else can I do?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 DVD Hanging - No Window Opened To Start Process

Dec 27, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..

But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..
my computer configuration :
Windows XP, SP 2
256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz
AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+
I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.

Fedora Installation :: 12 Hanging On Boot (most Times)?

Nov 26, 2009

I have just installed Fedora12 x86 64. On booting more often than not it hangs just before completing the login screen.I will try some of the options in the wiki. In the mean time has anyone else experienced this and resolved it.The odd thing is although the keyboard is not on, (num lock light goes out as boot starts and only comes back on if it has fully booted), the mouse will move around the screen but the click has no effect.Note the same behaviour was shown on the x86 64 live cd which I needed to install to enable me to create a bootable usb stick from the x86 64 DVD.

Debian Installation :: System Hanging On Upgrade To Jessie

Apr 5, 2016

I have an asus eee 1015px, which was running dualboot windows and wheezy with no problems (except the browsers seeming to take up a lot of CPU). Today having backed up everything, I wanted to upgrade to jessie. URL...

Everything seemed to be progressing fine, no strange messages, it took 1 hour for

Code: Select allapt-get upgrade

but maybe that's normal. However, then when I did

Code: Select allapt-get dist-upgrade

It froze at 17.30 with a weird screen. The sort of thing you never want to see on an install, a sad face and blocks instead of text.
pic: URL...

Then it moved on and gave a readout, which seemed pretty ominous
pic: URl...

It then moved and gave a readout, hanging again:
pic3: URl...

Now it seems to be in loop, moving on every 15 minutes or so but always ending up with the same screenful of text shown in the foto below, which ends with the last line reading like this:

Code: Select all[17798.587776] ieee80211 phy0: brcms_ops_bss_info_changed: arp filtering: enabled true, count 1 (implement)
or later
Code: Select all[20209.229273] ieee80211 phy0: brcms_ops_bss_info_changed: arp filtering: enabled true, count 1 (implement)

This pic shows the full screen: URL....

This is baffling for me I'm not very experienced with debian.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Hanging At "Allocate Drive Space"?

Apr 25, 2011

I am borrowing a friend's Eee PC 4G. Ubuntu eventually crashed because the hard drive filled up (even after all personal files had been removed). So now I'm trying to reinstall Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 from a bootable USB. Creating the USB worked fine and I managed to get all the way to the "Allocate drive space" screen. I opted to make no partitions and just use the entire disk space for the install. It tells me that 2 partitions will be deleted, which is fine. I then click Forward and it just hangs there endlessly, spinning its wheel. I suspect that the already-full hard drive may be causing problems. Is there any way around this so I can get the computer running again?

Worked fine. Then I tried to boot back into Debian. It hung. I rebooted and tried again. Hung again in the same spot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Finished - Click OK To Reboot It Never Does - Forcing A Shutdown

Sep 20, 2010

I'm having is trying to install ubuntu 10.04, when i get to the end and it asks you to click OK to reboot it never does, it sits there and never reboots (left for an hour!), forcing a shutdown and starting up then results in no GRUB coming up to dual boot (windows 7, installed on a seperate HDD)

This previously worked fine but I got rid of ubuntu to try a different flavour (which didn't install successfully, couldn't find the disk drive I wanted to install it on but I had already wiped ubuntu off for a fresh install)

I have formatted the partition i made (30gb partition) and manually created space for root and a partition from that for a swap file but this made no difference. I have used a partition manager and completely got rid of the partition (resizing the drive back up to full amount) and let the ubuntu installer do the partition itself but again the same problem.

I'm not sure what it is doing at this stage when going to reboot, i'm guessing installing GRUB and terminating the processes for the reboot, which never completes. I have also tried installing GRUB on the partition which said "Windows 7 loader" but that made no difference. I will try fixboot and fixmbr commands in windows recovery console in case it can't overwrite the boot sector for any particular reason tonight.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bootloader Fails After Reboot After Installation

Then it reboots again to finish the install of the OS. When I boot into Ubuntu now, grub does not appear. Instead, some initramfs stuff comes up in a console with no GUI and says some error stuff about root devices. I read that grub updates cause problems, but the installation never finished and therefore I was never able to go into Ubuntu to lock grub packages, etc. I've run into this error on multiple fresh installs.

Ubuntu :: Initial Reboot After Installation Never Happens?

Feb 27, 2011

I'm trying to install the latest release of Ubuntu from the official site, 10.10.

I downloaded the 64-bit edition first to install. After burning it to a CD, it launches in my PC just fine and lets me go through the install process. I'm letting Ubuntu use up the whole HDD, so no special options are being chosen during the install. At the end of the installation, it asks me to restart and I hit OK, it closes out of the box and leaves me looking at the default background... forever.

Thinking I did something wrong, I tried again, but this time left the box to download updates and install 3-rd party software unchecked. Same thing as above, it appeared to install just fine but hung after I tell it to reboot.

Lastly, I downloaded the 32 bit edition to try, and it gives me the same error.

If I hard restart my machine after waiting on the background image for a while, it will not boot when it comes back up. My PC just remains at a screen after the BIOS acting like it's searching for bootable media.

I'll be honest that I haven't waited for over 15 minutes for it to restart. But should it really take that long?
