I am using Ubuntu as the client machine operating system. I have a start up program to connect to a Windows terminal Server. I am needing assistance in how I can force the client to logoff if the terminal connection is terminated for any reason. This is more of a security issue as we do not want the students using the computer to access the loacl machine at all. The program works great on boot, but it shows the home screen when terminated.
I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop PC .While trying to play videos using smplayer the screen goes blank then the login screen appears.Tried vlc with no luck.Working fine on office PC
I can use this at the end of bash_profile to autorun start x after logging on. code...
But what about to auto logout after killing the X session? I hit exit from fluxbox, but I could add a menu item I suppose to just kill the xsession. Wondering if there is a graceful way to do it with bash_profile.
Also, on a related note, if I switch to dash with the bash_profile method still work?
There's a strange problem, after installing ubuntu 10.04.1 using wubi.
The installation goes fine in Windows, unpacks to an empty 15gb ntfs partition. After restarting to complete the installation, it would'n find the grldr but fixed that by copying over the wubi* files installed in C:.
Now the problem, the boot screen shows for a few seconds, switches to the default ubuntu wallpaper, the mouse cursor is there and working, and that's it. The installation doesn't continue, the keyboard won't work; Also I've tried all the additional options the installation offers when it asks to press Esc.
a few weeks ago i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC on which i was previously using Ubuntu 8.10. However after the installation of the new version, my machine keeps hanging all the time, like i can use it for 20 minutes and it hangs and completely freezes, so i have to force a shutdown in order to restart and it does so very often, i don't know where the problem really is. The PC is Pentium 4, 40GB hard disk, 512MB RAM, processor speed of 1.8 GHz.
My problem is with the new Ubuntu 10.04 Installer, and the Plymouth Bootloader.
I have installed Ubuntu plenty of times before on my hardware setup, so 10.04 shouldn't be significantly different, however I can't seem to get it to go past the purple screen with the red dots.
If i let it sit there for a while, then press an arrow key, it takes me to the text which is as follows:
Code: (process:404) : GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user(0) unable to open '/dev/mapper/nvidia_afgjfcea' unable to open '/dev/sda' unable to open '/dev/sdb'
Sometimes my Ubuntu keeps hanging when Unity crashes, or due to some other reason. Logging out and logging in again seems to solve this problem, but sometimes I cannot even access the terminal from the Desktop. Is there any command that I can use from the console so that my session at the desktop environment ends and I log out? I already tried gnome-session-save --logout but it doesn't work
I installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything works perfectly, but whenever I go to shutdown/restart, after showing the ubuntu logo (just like when you log in), the logo goes away, and it just hangs/freezes there.
I've tried waiting even for 10 minutes, but nothing. It there anything I can manually edit for it to just shutdown? If it helps here is my PC...

...and to be specific the WLAN module is a Ralink RT3090.
During a routine update of my desktop (ubuntu 10.04), the update is hanging at "unpacking replacement compiz-gnome". I was wondering if it is safe to kill the update, and, if not, what else I could do. This has been hanging there for about 2hrs now, so its not just taking its time.
I've been having trouble with my desktop ever since I upgraded from F 11 to F 13 last night. Finally, however, I got the proper version of the nVidia drivers installed. However, it's stopped completing boot. I've edited grub at boot to get it to show the boot messages and find that the last thing it reports is success in registering the binary for Windows applications. After that, it just sits there, doing nothing. I can go to an alternate console an d log in, but that's all.
If I log in and run startx, it fails. It reports that it was unable to load the nvidia module and "no screens found." Does anybody know what I should do next?I've removed both kmod-nvidia and akmod and am going strictly with the nouveau drivers.I've booted, used Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get a console, logged in as root and run the setup program to configure X to run that way, then returned to the main console and logged in as myself. Shortly after my wallpaper shows up, and long before I have a working desktop, it goes white and stays that way. Aside from getting a different video card (The old one worked Just Fine right up until I upgraded.) what else can I do?
when ever someone uses the log off option it always brings up a black screen that is only fixable by a hard reset. however when switch from or selecting a name to switch to works fine with no errors. is there anyway to fix this? im using lucid 10.04
I work for a public school and we are implementing a number of Ubuntu NBR 9.1 netbooks. I wanted to use Likewise Active Directory for authentication, but have problems with the software so now I'm onto another solution for our problem. We are going to have one login for all users (Students, is the name). The problem with this is that Website passwords can inadvertantly be stored, potentially compromising users personal data. Additionally, I don't want to have any files left in the Students profile in case people accidentally save personal information in their files.I'm thinking there are potentially two solutions:
1. The Students profile is deleted when the user logs off. This will erase web history and files
2. The Students account is always logged in with a temporary profile (or no profile, if that is possible) that deletes itself at logoff because it is temporary.
I'm having a hard time coming up with search terms for a solution like this, so I thought I would put the question to the experts.
I am having problems with freezing, hanging, blackouts and being unable to boot with 10.4. After having replaced the hard drive 3 times, and after reading much about these problems, have decided to regress to 9.10. How do I do it? I am weary of cleaning my hard disk to download 9.10 in case it freezes in the middle of the process.
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation.. Why its not coming in my PC.. my computer configuration : Windows XP, SP 2 256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+ I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.
I have just installed Fedora12 x86 64. On booting more often than not it hangs just before completing the login screen.I will try some of the options in the wiki. In the mean time has anyone else experienced this and resolved it.The odd thing is although the keyboard is not on, (num lock light goes out as boot starts and only comes back on if it has fully booted), the mouse will move around the screen but the click has no effect.Note the same behaviour was shown on the x86 64 live cd which I needed to install to enable me to create a bootable usb stick from the x86 64 DVD.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on an eee pc 1000H but the installer is hanging on the installation dialog that shows the check list for installation (min disk space, connected to the net, plugged in to wall outlet, etc).
I've setup pam_usb to allow me to log in with just my usb drive. This works fine, save for one issue. When I log in using pam_usb, my session dies abruptly if I unplug the usb drive.I am _not_ runing pamusb-agent.It seems like there may be some issue with policykit, but I'm not sure./var/log/auth.log:
Code: May 28 20:42:10 nitrogen gdm-session-worker[1836]: pam_succeed_if(gdm:auth): requirement "user ingroup nopasswdlogin" not met by user "dschep"
i block my screen (glmatriz screensaver), and go sleep or lunch, and when i get back, i have to logon again, and all my applications have been killed. the weirdest thing is that this does not happen everytime, but i cannot find a pattern to the times that happens.i pretty sure that the machine is not rebooting, cause my uptime still intact.some data: ubuntu lucid (upgraded from jaunty) x86, system all up to date. hardware is a desktop dell vostro 220n (intel chipset, 2gb memory and a pentium e5400.
I have 2 monitors on my system with the right one being the default. When I log out it changes the default display to he one on the left. This is incredibly annoying as it moves the launcher.
I have an asus eee 1015px, which was running dualboot windows and wheezy with no problems (except the browsers seeming to take up a lot of CPU). Today having backed up everything, I wanted to upgrade to jessie. URL...
Everything seemed to be progressing fine, no strange messages, it took 1 hour for
Code: Select allapt-get upgrade
but maybe that's normal. However, then when I did
Code: Select allapt-get dist-upgrade
It froze at 17.30 with a weird screen. The sort of thing you never want to see on an install, a sad face and blocks instead of text. pic: URL...
Then it moved on and gave a readout, which seemed pretty ominous pic: URl...
It then moved and gave a readout, hanging again: pic3: URl...
Now it seems to be in loop, moving on every 15 minutes or so but always ending up with the same screenful of text shown in the foto below, which ends with the last line reading like this:
I am trying to install Fedora Core 10 64bit on my Desktop... i've been running FC7 on it until now.The installer continues until the Anaconda GUI, and I am able to click next on language select, then when I click to select "U. S. English" as the keyboard layout and press NEXT, the installer hangs. I ran the disk verification at the start and it passed, so can't be a corrupted installation disk.I can move to the other terminals away from the Anaconda GUI Installer, and in one

Bit new to linux but what i saw with gloria in my opinion was a better os than windows. Just done a fresh install with helena on my sata drive and a dual boot with xp pro which is on my on my ide drive my problem is on boot I get to grub loading then boot hangs for 5 minutes before the dual boot screen appears and when it does I can not move up or down to select any options eventually however helena does start.
I am borrowing a friend's Eee PC 4G. Ubuntu eventually crashed because the hard drive filled up (even after all personal files had been removed). So now I'm trying to reinstall Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 from a bootable USB. Creating the USB worked fine and I managed to get all the way to the "Allocate drive space" screen. I opted to make no partitions and just use the entire disk space for the install. It tells me that 2 partitions will be deleted, which is fine. I then click Forward and it just hangs there endlessly, spinning its wheel. I suspect that the already-full hard drive may be causing problems. Is there any way around this so I can get the computer running again?
After running updates yesterday (Friday) now the Shutdown and Log Off buttons don't work in KDE. This happens with the taskbar buttons, and in the Leave menu. The only way out now is to ALT+F1 into a console, log in as root, and run shutdown. The system will shutdown at that point, but it's pretty inconvenient. I'm using the login manager that installs with KDE (can't remember the name) since Gnome was installed as a secondary desktop.
I have spent 20 minutes looking and can't find the solution. I just installed 10.10 and want 11.04 now. Don't ask me why I didn't just install Natty Narwhal, but I didn't. Now, when I run the update manager, it does not mention the update to 11.04. So I run check, nothing. I open the settings, check every option I can because what the heck, and nothing.
Commands as root works well when normal user is logged in and connected to net via KDE 4 network manager, but after logoff network is gone. And it is impossible to get it back because command mentioned above stops working!
