I am installling ubuntu on my old (2003) Dell D800 laptop with celeron processor, using a CD (burned at home). The installation process is hanging for about 24 hours now; it says "copying files..." with progress at 63%. The progress has not changed for about 10 hours.
I have a single hard drive on the machine (... noticed issues with dual drives on this forum, so thought I'd mention).
I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..

256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz
AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+

If a child process exits , the SIGCHLD signal is processed in parent process and it is forked again. When the parent process receives a SIGTERM signal it first tries to kill the child process using SIGTERM signal . if the child process dosen't get stopped then kill it using SIGKILL. Now,the Parent process sometimes gets hanged and the strace shows :
futex(0x98535e0, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL <unfinished ...>
My server pretty often becomes full up php processes running which are not needed.Is there a way to search for and kill any php process that is more than 3 hours old? as I understand it, i need to use ps piped with awk. awk at the moment seems very complicated to me, do not how to start tackling it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.
I am trying to install KUbuntu and the installer is struck at "copying files." The first time the installation went fine besides grub not booting properly. So I went ahead and tried to reinstall Kubuntu and now the installer hangs at 15-23% at copying files. I've already erased a bunch of partitions and told the installer to install the OS on "the largest contiguous free space" and it still hangs. To be honest I haven't allowed to it hang at 23 percent for more than one hour.The CD is not the issue as I've tried both Kubuntu and Ubuntu installers with the same result.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to migrate from Mandriva to Ubuntu and attempted to install the 11.04 and 10.04 CD distos on a 7-year old computer (Elite Group L7VMM3 motherboard, 1.4 ghz AMD Duron, 1.2GB RAM, 40GB IDE HDD).
The 11.04 installation CD makes it through the HD partitioning (erase everything), Computer name, time zone, and keyboard detection, but hangs after starting the "Copying files" stage of the install. The progress bar stops just below the in "Copying files...".
The 10.04 installation CD makes it through the "Installing the base system", "Retrieving console-terminus" with the progress bar stalled at 6%. Although the computer is old, Vista successfully installs on it.
After waiting copying files it stops at (I tried twice,the same command):

It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
I tried using an SD card to install - that also gave errors. I tried installing Windows as much as I hate it and, annoyingly, that installed without any problems whatsoever. Then I tried using the Alternate Install disc. That gave me a different error - did everything and apparently installed a "basic" system but failed to install software. Struggled to find an answer to that. How I can get Ubuntu 10.04 back on my netbook. As it stands at the moment I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I will have to install Windows or buy a new netbook - this seems preposterous!
I have seen that many people have this error and so it seems like some sort of bug. The only clue I had is that I did succeed in installing Ubuntu on my second 32 GB SD (the netbook has two (an 8 GB and a 32 GB). Unfortunately this SD appears much slower than the first so I erased it and went back to trying to get it on the 8 GB as before. Now it won't install on either - gives the same error. I do not believe that both my SD.s can be faulty and so I can only assume that somehow they both need erasing or formatting or something before I can reinstall.

Booting my previous kernel 2.6.27.27(different disk with different initrd.gz) it loads the same as above but continues with

Before I try changing CD drives, re-formatting the hard drive (again), or cleaning the CD drive, I must add that Xubuntu did open. I got rid of all traces of the previous operating system (WinME), and Xubuntu seems to work pretty well. The installation stopped at 41% of copying files. Should I aim for a finished installation or is this fine?

The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new PC with 9.10 desktop . It's running Zoneminder. For some reason it will not run more than 24 hours with out locking up . It's set up stand alone with no screen or keyboard. I hacked the vga port with 3 resistors so remote desktop works. I did this on 2 other systems and it always works fine. I want to ask where can I look in the logs to try and find out why this beast dies after just before 24 hours of run time.

It didn't work with my wireless card right away so I tried 11.04 and everything functions well running the "try ubuntu" from the live usb. When I go to install ubuntu beside my windows partition, the installation gets to the "Copying Files" part and then the netbook slows to a stall. I can move the cursor around but it moves very slowly, and I am unable to click anything. I have tried 3 times and it always seems to freeze at the same place, somewhere around 25%.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.
I am trying to write a simple back up script in python where I try to list the files that are 24 hours old in specific directories that I would choose.I read the manual of find and used
find . -mtime 1 > log.dat
to get the list of files in the log.dat however I also get the path information in that list as such

is there a way to exclude the directories and only get the files list.
Getting the list of files in the root directory that have changed less than 10 hours earlier, using grep, but without the directories.

Alright this works fine to pull the directories/files in the /var/Store/2010/ directory.
But when you click on of the links it tries to http://'serveradress'/$filename
note that $filename in the url is the filename clicked on so the php script is working. but I need it to change to that dir so that you can see the folder/files there and work your way up/down/side wise thru the folder tree to where you need to go. Not try and pop it as a direct url which doesn't work.
Have used 10.04 for almost a year now, and the 'upgrade' now beckons.How can I ensure that my programs and Download files remain intact following the process? I already have 11.04 as an .iso on cd, but am unsure how to proceed.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.
Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... Plus translate it all into German... If I were rich enough, I could just go there and do what I needed, but that is not in the cards for the present. ]

I was liking 10.4 in Virtual Box so much that I installed it to my laptop and then, after a very good experience, upgraded my other two Ubuntu machines. One went well, but this other one - the oldest - that has been on Ubuntu for years, is having trouble. The upgrade dialog is predicting another 12 hours and it's been at least 12 hours already. The log is moving swiftly and shows no sign of trouble.
