I've just recently wiped my hard disk and reinstalled windows and ubuntu. However, the boot manager is not seeing linux at all. I installed windows 7 first (on a blank slate), and then proceeded to repartition the hard drive with an ubuntu live cd and installed linux. The boot manager is automatically booting to windows 7 and is not seeing ubuntu at all.
View 7 RepliesI have been running a dual boot system Win 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 for months on 2 different systems. I just upgraded 1 system to 10.04. I had it set so that the grub boot will boot to the last selected OS. With 10.04 this no longer works. I went in and edited the etc/default/grub reset GRUB_DEFAULT=savedthen ran update-gruball seemed to work properly.but all boots always boot the top line (ubuntu) I must always manually select Windows 7 everytime
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 but I'm still using Grub1 as I came from 9.04.
Anyway, during the upgrade I kept my original menu.lst file when prompted as I have a Windows XP boot option that I wanted to keep. I have read that this means your kernel won't be updated - and indeed mine wasn't.
The new kernel files (vmlinuz-2.6.32-23-generic) are on my machine in the /boot directory. uname -r currently shows 2.6.31-20-generic.
From what I've read you should just need to run update-grub manually and it will install. However, I have done this but it isn't upgraded. It doesn't modify my menu.lst or anything.

So it says its updating menu.lst but there is still no entry for 2.6.32-23? Am I missing something?
Just installed kubuntu 10.4 on a netbook (dual booting with WinXP) but by default grub just boots directly into kubuntu. When editing /etc/default/grub I have tried setting the timeout to 10, 100 and now its at -1 (which should be sit there forever)I then run update-grub which generates the new config reboot and the same thing happens, it immediately boots to kubuntu. I see the menu appear for a split second, but no matter how fast i try, i cannot see to hit any button fast enough to kill the timeout so i can switch to XP.

I installed openSUSE on a 1tb HDD last night. I already have Windows Vista, and Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat (10.10) on my Laptop's 160gb Hard Drive. My computer was running fine beforehand, but after making a few miscalculations, whilke installing openSUSE i had deleted or overwritten GRUB, now I did what almost anyone that knows just a little about these things would do, and I reinstalled openSUSE, BUT this time i installed it on the 160gb hard drive with 17gb's of unallocated space that was in an "expanded partition" that was connected to Ubuntu and I got GRUB to work, but in the process i had made it so ubuntu was unable to boot or as it calls it an unbootable image, so since GRUB was working at this point I logged into windows, because openSUSE issn't supporting my wireless card, so anyway while i was on windows i downloaded the ubuntu 10.10 iso, and i installed it and it works, now i have eerything working, although it got rid of all my old ubuntu files, but i can live with that, BUT now my problem is i have to have my 1tb external HDD plugged in in order to boot up my computer, without it GRUB wont load, and so nothing else will load.
My question is: Is there a way to have a version of GRUB that will run on its own and not have to be installed alongside an OS (standalone GRUB) or a way that i can run GRUB off of my 160gb internal HDD and still have all 3 Operating system options (Windows Vista and openSUSE on the 160gbHDD, and ubuntu on the 1tb HDD) and have them all boot from that and (question 2 --->) also have it so that i dont require the 1tb Hard drive in to run GRUB?
Is the "saved" option for grub2 not available after the new upgrade?I had grub2 setup to let me load either windows or ubuntu, whichever I last used, and it worked.After the last update to Ubuntu I cannot get this to work anymore. I can successfully change the default boot entry by entering a number, e.g. "GRUB_DEFAULT=3" but when I put in"GRUB_DEFAULT=saved" it always defaults to the first entry, the latest Ubuntu. I can also change the screenresolution for the grub menu on this computer, but on another computer I cannot change the screen resolution for grub or restore the 'saved' option (I have not tried to change the boot default by numbers on this other computer though). I am only editing /etc/default/grub and running update-grub, is there another script or file I should be changing as well since the update?

i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?
i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)
I did a fresh install of Fedora Core 10 32bit on my Caompaq Presario AMD 64 laptop which originally only had Vista ultimate 64bit. When I go in to grub and choose windows I get a screen that says:

The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.

I have tried the testdisk/update-grub method, but it didn't work.
So my computer has ubuntu 9.10 installed 1st and I want to install win 7 in a separate partition. Basically, ubuntu 1st, win 7 later so far from what I learned from search results, grub 2 have problem with win 7 installed later and what was recommended was install win 7 before ubuntu. how ever I do not have the time to start over again because there are too many things to back up or install again. can I simply revert grub 2 to grub 1 again and resolve the problem?

Seem to have knocked out GRUB as normal loading screen does not appear anymore.
Worse, I think I accidently installed grub to something labelled SDC5.
Cannot get anything except the "grub rescue" prompt. I'm not sure if using the LiveCD (9.10) can help. Have tried a few prompts from other threads but just ended up with mud splattered all over the place. I'm gathering I need to load grub, but can I do it using any grub rescue commands?
installed windows 7..then tried restoring grub using live cd....mounted partition somewhere else....then installed ubuntu again where it was installed previously and now grub is not detecting windows 7 but i am able use my windows files
used sudo update-grub2.
If I use the super grub disk I can get to my ubuntu partition otherwise my windows partition boots automatically. I spent over an hour in the community documentation using the live cd to reinstall grub and nothing has fixed it. I think that grub is installed and the windows bootloader is just taking precedence.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back
View 9 Replies View RelatedI do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was installing command-line-only version of Ubuntu from alternate cd. I already have an existing standard Ubuntu installation on a separate partition. Both installations share the same /home partition. When asked to choose the /boot partition, I provided the /boot partition that was used by my previous standard installation. Now that installation has finished successfully, when I try to boot, GRUB only points to the later installation (no X). Is there a way to point GRUB to my first installation as well?

Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
I had Fedora 14 (x86) and Windows XP with Grub Legacy (Grub) for dual boot in my desktop.
I installed Debian and Grub 2 replaced Grub in the MBR.
Must I reinstall F14 to recover Grub as bootloader or is there another lighter way to do it?
After I installed Windows XP on my leftover partition, I decided to reinstall grub2.
Now when I reboot grub throws me in the grub shell, if I then type configfile /grub/grub.cfg it starts grub like its supposed to. Tho I cant seem to be able to go straight to the grub menu and no to the shell.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have two problems, that I can live with, but they are just annoying for tha afact that I don't know how to fix them.1. My suspend does not work. Hibernation works - after I turn on after the hibernation, screen is blank, I have to move the mouse for the login window to appear. For Suspend, I get to the black screen, but then nothing happens - when I move the mouse or Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, nothing. It is a laptop, if that makes a difference.2. When booting, I get a table of choices - the new kernel, the old kernel, memtests and the long gone windows partition. There is no /etc/grub/menu.lst and I've got no idea how to change this.

I installed it, Terminal reported no problems. I decided to restart because of other changes I made.My laptop is an Acer Aspire D255, Single Core atom N450, with a Hitachi HTS545012B9A300 HDD, There are two operating systems. Ubuntu 10.10 (personally my favorite.) and Windows Seven Home Premuim. What I'd like to do is save the Windows Side if I can. Or both. But Mainly windows for my iTunes.
