May 11, 2010I just upgraded to 10.04 with update manager and now I want to update skype. I need to know if my 10.04 is 32 or 64 bit, how do I find that info.?

Aug 6, 2010so i cannot install anything because update-info-dir file is missing from /var/lib/dpkg/info/ .. I've searched for the last day and a half for a way to fix this, but nothing. can't even update dpkg because of this. so how do I bypass or fix this so I can install stuff (this is a fresh install of ubuntu 10.04 lts Lucid Lynx).

Nov 24, 2010I 've some problems with my current version 11 that probably has been fixed in the last version (14). I've updated other non-critical systems through the yum services but from 13 to 14. I've a productive workstation working on ver.11. Is there any possibility to update through yum or other methods through without risks of losses data information?... It's really complicated to backing up Mysql databases, web services and other hundreds things installed. I know, it's convenient carry out a backup but is it a higher risk to dump from 11 to 14 trying to keeping the information inside?

I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago.

Jul 9, 2010I noticed a red triangle at the top right of my screen today and I've been trying to sort out the problem. is says "update information is outdated" I used the update like it suggested but get this error msg. Nov 24, 2010I'm using 10.10 i386 on hp pavilion dv9620us. The top panel keeps showing a red triangular caution alert that when moused over reads: "The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for Updates'and check if some of the repositories fail." I had clicked this button a few times. The first time it installed a kernel update. The next couple times I don't think it did anything but check for updates.

About two months ago, a red triangle started appearing in tray from now and then, with this message: The update information is outdated. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail.
When I open the Update Manager to check for updates, it says:

Check your Internet connection.

My connection is just fine and when there actually are updates, everything works great, so I don't understand why the red triangle goes on showing up in tray.
Ubuntu :: Update System Info (after Installling An Image On A New Computer)?
Mar 8, 2011I've just receive my new Dell desktop and I used CloneZilla to move everything from my old computer to the new one. I made an image of the disk of the old computer and restored this image on the new one.
For most of it, it worked well: it was relatively quick, and I have all my old settings except everythings is going quicker. But the new system is not entirely recognized: the processors are correctly identified, but I can't see the new RAM memory: hardinfo, free or cat /proc/meminfo all seem to refer to the memory of the old system, not the one that is on the new computer.Is there a way to force the system to reinspect the hardware and 'discover' its new ressources?

Jan 8, 2011I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite C650D which has AMD processor. For some rescuing, I wanted to put ubuntu live CD. Ubuntu starts with some screen but then it converts to text mode and just sit there. I have checked md5sum of the iso file I got , before burning it on the CD. After burning the image, I also checked the directory structure on the iso file and the CD. They are fine. Currently I am writing this from XP. How do I use Ubuntu Live CD.
For burning, I used infrarecorder with 'Burn Image' option. I had installed debian and win xp with the same CD , so I can't see the problem with the CD. Anyway, I tried doing this with different CD and the same problem appears.
The CD's are memorex
CD-RW 700 MB 4X multi speed.
And I don't get the ubuntu boot screen at all. Some screen with ubuntu symbol appears and then text mode with some information about the hardware and it hangs there.

Apr 5, 2011I cannot install Kubuntu 8.04LTS. When I run the Live CD and click to install it gets me the box that should show me my hard drives and possible partitions but the box is empty. I get the same when booting to the Live CD and clicking on install. I have had this CD since Kubuntu 8.04 was released. So not knowing what might be wrong I figure I will ask here for what to type in a command line to install it. I know it is an old version but it is the last one with KDE 3.5.

Aug 9, 2011When you have boot troubles, you will often be asked to run Boot-Info-Script in order to see a summary of your boot parameters. Standard method is a little difficult, so I made a little GUI to do it very easily :
1) Boot on Ubuntu live-CD or live-USB. (or Boot-Repair-Disk which will lead you automatically to step 4)
2) Connect internet
3) Open a terminal and type :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && gksu boot-repair
4) Click on "Create a BootInfo summary":
5) Done !

Jun 19, 2009After the latest yum updating, yum hides detailed info about what it will do when it work. Previous version of yum will list the packages to be updated, installed, or deleted, and then ask you if it is what you want; this updated yum show nothing but "Are you sure?"( or something equivalent ): you don't know what it will do at all! Seems you have type "y" and see what it will download and install or uninstall. I don't know if new yum has changed its notice method or if I need add some plug-ins for it to show me those info as it did.

Debian :: Setting Up Info Of Local Repo In Installation
Apr 15, 2010I've created a local repository, my web server (apache) is up and running and my repo is inside it, so I want to install debian using it, in the stage of enter manually the info of the debian mirror I put:
1. debian archive mirror hostname:
192.168.10.1
2. debian archive mirror directory:
/repo
But after this, the installation tell me that it doesn't find the repo, I tried several ways, like: http://192.168.10.1; /repo/; /repo/ binary/ but nothing. What is the correct syntax to use my local repo?

Dec 21, 2010i am having a problem with the installation with ubuntu 10.10 during the installation, i was entering my setup info (login password, timezone, etc.) when everything stopped working, it wouldnt let me continue, the forward button wouldnt work. i let it set for a good 30 minutes but it wouldnt do anything.
so unable to continue, i restarted and tried to boot from my cd drive and now it wont boot from the drive, and since i let ubuntu delete my windows partition, i cant boot from it so i basically have a blank hard drive. the cd drive will boot other cds because i booted hirens boot cd in an attempt to make sure the cd drive was functioning and ran diagnostics to make sure the drive was alright.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Looks Like Not Finding 9.10?
Jan 27, 2010I bought new Sony VAIO NS31S. It had preinstalled Windows Vista. I wanted to go back to Ubuntu, cause I used it (but never been really understanding how its working) on my previous notebook. I downloaded Wubi with Ubuntu 9.10, installed, rebooted - everything was fine. I even had connection to the web (what I was very suprised to see, cause I had troubles with that Net provider on my old hardware with U 8.something).
I removed several programs, mainly games or accessories for PalmOS, etc. On the second hand I installed Kadu, Google Chrome (here I couldnt use Software Center, it was installed form downloaded package), Netbeans, and then some errors occured, so I allowed system to get updates. After installing them I switched off computer, and today (the whole story was yesterday and day before) I wanted to boot Ubuntu, but GRUB gives me command line & some info(in a while I swith VAIO off, go to the old machine, and try to rewrite text from GRUB here). I TABbed, and there was a list of commands, so I tried some of them, and It looks like my system is gone. On Windows side I think its all ok - here's my folder hierarchy:

if there are /'s before files name it means its a directory. else its a normal file. Whitespaces shows what belongs where.if there already has been topic like this. Ive searched this forum for 'wubi' 'vaio' and 'grub' and there was nothing I thought might be simillar. Is it possible to switch off double system choosing? I mean Windows gives me choice to boot Windows or Ubuntu, or use some windows recovery tools. If I try to boot Ubuntu, there comes GRUB, which gives second choice of choosing Windows. But this is smaller problem, then nnot booting linux I rebooted once again. Here's what GRUB says:

Ubuntu :: Finding OpenGL For A 64 Bit Installation?
Jun 9, 2010I'm trying to find a 64 bit version of OpenGL for Linux. I tried driver from Nvidia, but it turned out that it required a specific graphics card, (which either I don't have, or VMware has trouble noticing that I do. I have a laptop with some Nvidia, Geforce with Cuda card.
In any case, I just need to find 64bit OpenGL for Ubuntu 10.04. I keep finding 32 bit versions, or other versions that don't apply to me.
I'm still kind of new and it's possible that I haven't been looking the most effective places. I tried google and sourceforge, but I couldn't quite find it.
If anyone knows where I can get it, or knows of a better place to look, I would be very grateful.
P.S. I also tried the package manager and the OpenGL site.
Ubuntu Installation :: Windows XP Not Finding NTFS Hdd
Jan 27, 2010I have reformatted my 320 GB and creating a separate NTFS partition for Windows XP.
When I boot with the CD and proceed to the setup window, Windows does not recognise any HDD on my laptop, hence cannot install it.
I have attached two screen shoots of my partitions. Can anyone tell why XP is not finding the NTFS partition?

May 23, 2010Having a little problem with 10.04 installation. I have two hard drives installed on my PC. One that had Hardy Heron and one data. When the install program launches from a CD boot, it fails and drops me to a live session to check out the problem. I can see both drives and mount them but if I then launch the installer, it does not give either as an option for installation.
