Sep 2, 2009
When I update my system by KpackageKit I have the ability to read what was fixed by that package update by clicking on package's name. How to read this info in command line by yum?

When I open Update Manager and click "check," it starts downloading package information and then the following pops up: Could not download all repository indexes.
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago.

This is the error I got when I tried to update it today. On the top the icon for the update manager is a red circle with a white line like a stop sign. When I click on it this is the error message I get. Could not initialize the package information. An unresolved problem occurred while initializing the package information.
please report this bug against "update-manager" package and include the following error message :
'E:Malformed line 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse),
E:The list of sources could not be read.'

I 've some problems with my current version 11 that probably has been fixed in the last version (14). I've updated other non-critical systems through the yum services but from 13 to 14. I've a productive workstation working on ver.11. Is there any possibility to update through yum or other methods through without risks of losses data information?... It's really complicated to backing up Mysql databases, web services and other hundreds things installed. I know, it's convenient carry out a backup but is it a higher risk to dump from 11 to 14 trying to keeping the information inside?

I have spent some time in photoshop. And I remember a useful feature in it, where Photoshop can tell you info about the image, by pressing on the properties or something. Photoshop can say what the picture was taken with (mobile / camera) and what date.
I run Ubuntu now is there anyone who knows a program which can do the same for Ubuntu? I can't find anything in GIMP

After installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) the system generates a kickstart script, one section of which is about the package groups installed. For example:
Code:
...
%packages
@admin-tools
@base
@base-x
@core
@editors
@ftp-server
@java
@server-cfg
@text-internet
...
Before using this kickstart script for another installation I'd like to know what packages are included in each group, how can I get this information? For example, how can I know the list of packages I will install by having the line: @java in the kickstart file? Any Red Hat documentation about it? I could not find any...

On my Fedora 11 x86_64 computer I have installed OOo 3.1.1 from www.openoffice.org because I need features that Fedora disabled in the repository version.And the latter also shows up in Software Update. Now, I went around and around with this and I know that installing the 1.3.1.1 package will break my OOo. I don't want Software Update even to list the 1.3.1.1 package because sooner or later I will slip up and install it on accident.
Side note: Why does Software Update think 1.3.1.1 is newer than 1.5.1? If it really is newer, someone at OOo needs to learn arithmetic.I think I can add an exclude line to /etc/yum.conf. But I can't figure out the syntax, and I don't know which package to exclude - the one I don't want updated or the alleged update package? Both? Or just the first part "openoffice.org-ure"?

Now, every time I do yum update my system will also offer me package for F12, F13, F14. But if I try to install it, it will not resolve because I my system is still F11. I don't remember exactly what the error message is, but I think it said that I should have system > 13 to install that packages. What should I do so next time I do yum update I just offered packages I needed only?

Is there an easy way/place to get more info on the updates that the Ubuntu (9.04) Update Manager presents to you? I know you can highlight one and look below at the "Changes" and "Description". But how can you find a real explanation of what the update is? To give one exampe: There's a 5.0MB update called: openoffice.org-writer It appears to be a new version of the Writer program?? or is it just security updates?? Should I install it if I'm happy with the current Writer version? bottom line: where can I get plain talk about what these updates are?
