Fedora Installation :: Crippling Graphics Error When Trying To Load Live CD
Aug 4, 2010
I'm not entirely new to Linux, but I'm far from a standard user. I decided to give it another try with Fedora on my new Asus G60JX laptop. Specs: Intel Core i5 430m, Nvidia GeForce GTX 360m, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
When I attempt to run the live CD from either a physical CD or a bootable flash drive, it loads as usual. However, once Fedora goes to the desktop, I get this screen:
As you may be able to tell, it's a garbled version of the Windows desktop I had previous to the reboot. Evidently, something in my hardware is not supported. However, I fail to see how I can install drivers when this is literally all I can coax the computer into doing.

I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 and used 'U904p' a program I had for creating 9.04 live USB I had before. I had 9.04 on the USB pen but thought that 9.10 would be better to install right away rather than upgrading it. So I run through the CLI and make it bootable and all that. I come to put in my pretty old (Spare parts mashed together) Linux box. I get this about 1 minute after the Ubuntu logo and loading bar:
Top of page: WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic: No such file or directory
Then lots of 'FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-14generic/modules.dep No Such file or directory'
Then I am dumped in to Busybox in initramfs command line. I have been googling and look around the forums all last night and this morning. I find loads of stuff from 9.04 but not 9.10? I tried the old 'Pull USB pen when Ubuntu log shows' and 'Changed SATA settings' turned them off in end, using IDE. Could it be that I created it using the old U904p program. I will look in to the newer one. Seen it about on forums. Otherwise any ideas? I am wanting to build a FOG box for imaging all my PC's and trailing it for work.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I am using fedora10 in my notebook. I installed nvidia-graphics driver as follows.
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm'
su -c 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-*'
Then i installed kmod-nvidia with yum su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia' When i tried to open NVIDIA control panel, i got a message that nvidia-driver should be configured. Then i issued the following command as root.
nvidia-xconfig. The i rebooted the system. Now in the boot menu, i see two kernel informations as follows
Fedora (2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686)
Fedora (2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.PAE)
If i boot my linux with first one, x windows starts, if i boot with the second one (previously default), the x-windows is not opening. Why this happens? So i booted my system with first option in the boot menu. The system booted and x.windows started but i am not able to use any software that uses opengl window. The glxinfo command gives me the following error.

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and have had no problems with my ATI card up to kernel 2.6.32-29. Upon update/upgrade to 2.6.32-30 the FGLRX driver will not load graphics and I can only get the text system login. If I reboot to -29 everything works great.

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.
General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.

I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

I was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.
I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:

What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

So after having performance issues with Karmic in ext4 I decided to install Hardy with ext3. Was blazing fast, epic, I loved it. But I wanted firefox 3.5 & all the other cool stuff Karmic has.. so I decide to install Karmic, but this time with ext3 instead of 4.
First installation: After the installation went fine, no errors while installing or anything. I remove the CD and reboot. "GRUB Loading, please wait.. Error 15" I did my googling, with the live CD to try and figure out a way of fixing this error. No luck. I did find out that the error is caused by the GRUB trying to load form the wrong drive. So I try to boot directly from the Karmic drive, Error 15. Try to boot directly from the Windows drive, Error 17.
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. First time installing Hardy, everything went great. Installing Jaunty, everything went great. Installing Karmic (for the first time) everything went great. Uninstalled Karmic and installed Hardy, everything went great. Uninstalled Hardy to install Karmic = FAIL!. I did a clean install every single time. The OS is being installed (clean) in the same drive.
A 40GB drive for Windows. A 200GB drive for Ubuntu +/home +swap, and a 120GB(FAT32) for storage.
I installed Karmic 3 times, yes.. 3 times. The last time I installed I removed both the 40GB & the 120GB drives. Leaving only the one I was going to use for Ubuntu, the 200GB drive. After the installation I rebooted and Karmic loaded without problems. I'm in Karmic right now and it isn't all sluggish like it was with ext4, guess my old drives aren't good with ext4 *sight*.
But I can't use my Windows drive. When trying to boot directly from it, it gives me "GRUB Error 17" - I have to disconnect the Ubuntu drive to boot into Windows. Quick question: What the **** is going on?
Someone help, please.. I'm tired of this ****.. and if I have to install Karmic one more time, I won't. I'll just give up and disconnect my Ubuntu drive, put it away and let it accumulate dust somewhere, seriously.. Someone help me correct this without having to install the OS again.
The GRUB error is while the GRUB is loading. It doesn't give me the option to select a OS.

I've finally gotten around to installing Ubuntu 10.10. I currently have it installed on on a 320GB HDD. It's the 64bit. I also have Windows 7 x64 on a 1TB HDD. After I installed it, I keeping getting "Error: You Need To Load the Kernel First." Windows 7 boots up fine, but Ubuntu doesn't. I'm almost completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know how I would go about fixing this.

"The installer has encountered an unrecoverable error.A desktop session will now begin so you can investigate the problem or try installing again".It didn't get as far as giving me the option to check cd disc for defects, try without installing etc.9.04 and 9.10 installed fine on my two hard drives, so presumably this is not a hardware problem. During a desktop session I noticed a prompt to install proprietary drivers (graphics?). Could this be the problem? I don't have anywhere near the knowledge to 'investigate the problem'.

[URL] this thread had some information but i need some clarification as the results i got from the diaagnostics were not the same as the OP. my prooblemm is when i put the cd in the drive, i get this error:
Unable to mount Ubuntu 10.04 DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
when i type this command:
sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom
i get this message:
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: /dev/scd0 already mounted or /media/cdrom busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/scd0 is mounted on /media/cdrom0

the fellow fixed his by adding or editing his menu.lst in grub, but since my results are not exactly the same as his i dont know what it is i should be adding or editing. but it seems to have something to do with installing generic ide drivers and disabling the flopy drive and another item that even he didnt know what it was doing

Today, I burned a copy of Lubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and tried installing it on my old 2.4Ghz Celeron 192MB RAM (actually 256MB with 64MB dedicated by the BIOS for the internal video card) laptop, which installed Lubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx with absolutely no problems. However, when I tried inserting the disk for Maverick this time around, the live CD boot always hangs during Plymouth, and pressing Esc shows:
Code:
Generating locales. en_US.UTF-8.I modified the boot options and removed splash and quiet, and I got a whole lot of messages that seemed like errors, but I think the root of the problem was this:
Code:
Out of memory: kill process 620 (localedef) source 929 or a child Killed process 620 (localedef) VS2: 59500kB, anon-rss: 57596kB, file-rss: 820kB After that, it got a few messages about localedef timing out for 120 seconds or something. Now I'm no idiot, I'm well aware that my laptop is cutting it very close to the minimum RAM requirements of the live CD, but it's just the live CD that stops me from running Lubuntu, because once it's installed, I have no problems. I ran Lubuntu 10.04's Live CD with no problems and the installed LXDE system ran amazingly fast. I'm sure if I could just install Lubuntu 10.10, it would run at the same speed. The problem is that the Lubuntu wiki still writes the minimum system requirements of:

I booted my Fedora 13 live CD on my Dell server, and configured networking and SSHd. On my desktop I logged into the live cd and started copying over a big file (1.5 GB) (i.e. copying from the desktop computer to the server). After copying about half the fil, the download fails with an error message about the filesystem being read-only.I've seen this exact same behavior on both i386 and x86_64 of the same live CD, but don't know why it's happening. I've also had the same issue when copying small files. In /var/log/messages these messages are repeated many times:
Code:

Dec 20 12:32:23 localhost kernel: lost page write due to I/O error on dm-0
