Cutting a long story short (my machine won't allow me to login without the proprietary fglrx driver installed), how do you install the fglrx driver in Natty, from the console? he following commands have been suggestedbut haven't worked:

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and have had no problems with my ATI card up to kernel 2.6.32-29. Upon update/upgrade to 2.6.32-30 the FGLRX driver will not load graphics and I can only get the text system login. If I reboot to -29 everything works great.

I went to System > Administration > Hardware drivers.
It downloads but when trying to install I get an error that says: "SystemError: installArchives() failed"

I recently had to reinstall openSUSE 11.2 on my computer...
specifications
nx 6120 laptop
512 Ram
1.77 ghz processor
and i think i have intel 915 graphics chipset or something....
but now to the point. i had to make a fresh install on my computer. Before that it was working fine. I used a live usb for the installation process. there no GUI came up but i used yast2 to install the live usb. installation went smoothly with no hiccups....i restarted the computer and selected open SUSE 11.2 in the boot menu.
but after booting it again comes to this dark screen with a lot green 'dones' and then finally at the bottom i have my login space....so no desktop.
I got given an old (non brand name) laptop and have installed XP and kubuntu 10.04 on it. The graphics card is Radeon Mobility X1600. Kubuntu gets a very strange problem which does not happen in XP:
Although the installation graphics are OK (sort of, there are some strange font irregularities), when it tries to reboot and fire up the graphics all hell breaks loose, the display is broken in two parts and shifted up with the overflowing region coming up from below. I 'm guessing something in the X server is trying to start and failing because when I try to drop to a text terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F<something or other>) I get pages filling up with error messages.
Unfortunately I can't remember what the messages say and I don't want to try to recreate it in a hurry because after this happens, subsequent reboots start the computer in this split screen mode (weirdly omitting the BIOS POST message) and I 'm not sure how to get it fixed, so far removing the battery, reseting the BIOS to default and letting it cool down seem to work, eventually.
Anyway, I figured since XP seems to be fine, it must be a software problem, although I 'm mystified how it persists and jumps between reboots (the split screen persists even all the way to the BIOS menu). I tried getting the driver from the ATI site code...

So, if I can't run the ATI driver, my other option is to run whatever it is that the "Hardware Drivers" KDE menu item runs to get it to sniff out the driver I need. But I can't start an X server so I need to either run whatever it is that runs behind it or get the package I need through apt-get?
I did a fresh install of openSUSE 11.2 32 bit today and installed all updates. I also installed the kernel sources and kernel symbols. Finally I installed the ATI drivers from http:///www2.ati.com/suse/11.2. The drivers didn't work after that, so I tried to run the 32 bit driver installer suitable for my gfx card (Radeon X800 XT PE -> v9.3), where I got the following error message:

I had no such problems with openSUSE 11.1 32 bit. Is there a way to install the drivers on my system? If yes, how would I do it?
I am trying to install xorg-driver-fglrx using apt--get but it return error which says btw i am using ubuntu8.10 Desktop distribution

I installed this graphics card update in kubuntu 11.04 [URL].... And when now kubuntu boots to a command line interface login screen I don't mind reinstalling to fix it, i would just like to install the latest version of the graphics card driver. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.10 from an 8GB USB flash drive with persistence to see if I can get it working the way I need it before I can completely transition from Windows. I have an onboard ATI Radeon HD3300 running dual monitors which is on the list of supported devices for the FGLRX driver package, but I've encountered multiple issues.
First, when I chose to activate it from the Add'l Drivers dialog, it gave an error: "SystemError: installArchives() failed". I found a forum where someone had suggested opening the Terminal and giving the following commands:sudo aticonfig --initialfollowed bysudo rebootWhen my system rebooted, the Ubuntu screen showed "Ubuntu 10.10" in a plain font instead of the Ubuntu graphical logo, and then it quickly displays an error in a dark-colored font and then the screen flickers several times before stopping at a full-screen terminal. I have never used Linux before, so I don't know any commands at all or even what to do from here. I just want the dual screens to work and have the correct resolution.
Am I going to have to format and reload my flash drive again?

VirtualBox (any version) crashes at startup if the video acceleration options are enabled. This was not a problem before installing fglrx. The crash occurs when VirtualBox queries the video driver about OpenGL, I am guessing from the log file.
To (supposedly) have access to all of the features possible in the video adapter I installed the ATI fglrx video driver. I (apparently foolishly) chose the custom, installation-specific path rather than the more general default path.
After installing the driver I saw no observable improvement in performance or feature set. Worse, there are couple of new features that are decidedly undesirable, and cannot be disabled. At least one pre-loaded font simply disappeared.
So I reverted to the original (open source?) radeon driver ("sax2 -r -m 0=radeon" at runlevel 3). All seemed welluntil I ran VirtualBox.
One thing I have not tried is to run the fglrx default installation. I fear making things worse.
Can anyone suggest what might have happened with the fglrx installation, and how to fix it?

With Windows, this used to be no big deal, because I would hook up a monitor, hit a key combo on the keyboard, and everything would come up on the other monitor.I know how to do this using the GUI, but unfortunately, I can only see about a 2 inch strip at the top of her computer. I can see the gnome menu bar, and when I go into the Nvidia configuration, I can't make out anything below the tops of the two monitors it detects. (I was able to get it to detect both displays, but I can't see to press the "configure" button.)What I need to do, is configure the new monitor from the command line using the two inches of visible monitor that I have at the top of her broken LCD.

I used ATI Catalyst's GUI to install (in hindsight terminal might have been better and more informative) and it is now saying

So how and why do i save my X Window config and when I give the aticonfig command it says no adapters detected
I'm having problems with my Nvidia card. X doesn't work after installation (9.10), only command prompt. I've read the instructions at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nvidia on how to enable Nvidia drivers, but the instructions are only for GUI, which I don't have.
Anyone knows how to enable Nvidia drivers from command line ?
Flgrx won't work w/switchable graphics using non-AMD chipset. I use core i5 with ati mobility radeon 5470 (so it doesn't have amd chipset). This is the X output when graphics mode in BIOS is set to switchable.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI compiled the 2.6.31.6 kernel and <insert drumroll> it boots!(my first kernel roll, I'm kind of shocked actually) That's the good news. The bad news is that my NVIDIA drivers are gone in the wind. That's not entirely true as I can still boot into the old kernel and startx. Is there a way to download the driver using the command line for reinstall?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.
As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my PC last weekend. Other than the fact I had no sound (that's another story...), everything went fine. I then got prompted to install nvidia graphic drivers. Since I installed them and rebooted, i cannot get acces to my ethernet connection. I tried the solutions listed here, but none worked. Also, when i boot on my windows OS, the Internet is working properly. I tried tonight re-installing Ubuntu 10.04. I thought if the graphic caused problem, maybe a new blank installation would just do it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I had downloaded the Nvidia driver from their site but the way it installed on Ubuntu is not the same here in Debian. Obviously, I failed.
I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.
I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.
My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.
