Flgrx won't work w/switchable graphics using non-AMD chipset. I use core i5 with ati mobility radeon 5470 (so it doesn't have amd chipset). This is the X output when graphics mode in BIOS is set to switchable.

Ubuntu :: Catalyst For 10.04 64bit And Switchable Graphics

Aug 31, 2010

I just got an HP dv7t Select Edition. I dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. On Windows, I'm able to do a lot to customize graphics settings and switch from a mobility 5650 and the integrated Intel graphics to save battery life. how do I correctly install the proprietary ATI drivers for Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit? I tried installing using the "restricted driver" pop up after first installing, but that caused my screen to go blank after rebooting.

Furthermore, is there a way to switch graphics what graphics card I'm using? When I'm at home I like being able to use the dedicated card, but when I'm away and need to save power, I would like to be able to switch to the integrated card. I don't mind having some sort of option of selecting what card to use in the BIOS or something, although being able to switch on the fly would be nice. Finally, if I make any changes, how do I undo them without having to reinstall?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Switchable Graphics On Acer 3280TG

May 9, 2010

I have an Acer 3280TG which has ATI Switable Graphics, intel integrated graphics card and ATI HD5650. I would like to -always- use intel integrated on linux and apparently I'm using the HD5650 because my battery is taking a major hit, only lasting 2h10 instead of 4h on windows. Plus, even though the brightness key commands work, there is no difference in the screen real brightness. I can set brightness to the minimum and it will be at the maximum. By the way, after installing the ATI proprietary drivers I get a black screen after the splash screen of ubuntu, to get ubuntu back I have to delete the X11 conf file.

Debian Installation :: Jessie Install With Switchable Graphics

Jul 20, 2015

Somehow got it partly to work. I have a new installation and I am using the 4.1 kernel now. I can switch on the Radeon chip which is great, but still have some trouble when trying to turn it completely off.

I have an Acer Aspire 4820TG Laptop with:
Core: i7-640M
integrated graphics: Intel
discrete graphics: Radeon Mobility 5650HD

I have installed Debian Jessie. After installing the non-free firmware for my ATI chip (following [URL] .....) so I could use vgaswitcheroo, the system broke.

The problem looks as follows: When I start the system the graphical login screen gets stuck and the console tells me first:

Code: Select allradeon 0000:01:00.0: Userspace still has active objects!

then a lot of numbers, then

Code: Select allradeon 0000:01:00.0: ring 5 stalled for more than 10000 msec
[drm:uvd_v1_0_ib_test] *ERROR* radeon: fence wait failed (-35).
[drm:radeon_ib_ring_tests] *ERROR* radeon: failed testing IB on ring 5 (-35).

and this repeats once (or twice?) until several new messages arrive.

Those pause at

Code: Select allFixing recursive faul but reboot is needed !

Then again lots of more error messages until the everything freezes, with the last message

Code: Select all---[ end trace 13dfd971ff8e0aed]---

(Might contain typos. I don't know how to get the whole messages since the system dies a minute after booting and I only have a few seconds after the error messages start)

Even when I prevented the xserver from starting at boot I still got the same problems.

I would very much like to be able to switch between my chips, because I can only use external monitors when the ATI chip is active, but I would also like to be able to use the battery saving internal chip option.

I also tried to install the proprietary driver (though I would prefer if I didn't have to do that), but I couldn't get the xserver to work while it was installed.

lscpi output:

Hardware :: Thinkpad T400 Graphics Cards And Fglrx 9.8

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.

As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.

Software :: Fedora 11 Lenovo Laptop Fglrx OR Radeonhd Discrete Graphics

Jul 10, 2009

I just put Fedora 11 on my Lenovo Thinkpad t400. I selected the integrated (lousy, but Intel (supported)) graphics device in the BIOS, but I really hate the lower performance than the discrete graphics device. However, this device requires fglrx or radeonhd for DRI. RPMFusion has not released an (a)kmod-fglrx, so I can't use that. I have heard radeonhd has some stability issues though, and I don't know how to install. I was wondering how I could completely change my graphics configuration (change chipsets in the BIOS) and get the X Server in Fedora 11 working with the new driver and chipset. Is it a good idea to use radeonhd, or should I wait for the fglrx?

Even then, how would I completely change my graphics configuration so it would work with a different card & driver? I don't want to do a fresh install because I've done a lot of work & customization with the F11.I don't know anything about radeonhd, so any information about this kind of thing would be useful. Finally, should I just suck it up and deal with the Intel graphics? Is anything of this sort really worth my time? (I'm willing to spend quite a bit, trust me!)

Debian Hardware :: ATI R7 Graphics Card - Open Source Radeon Or Fglrx Catalyst?

Jul 11, 2014

I've set up this new PC, the graphic card I picked is the ATI R7 260X, pretty good card with lots of core processors, high clock and 2GB memory. I'm now currently using the 14.4 catalyst drive, it works actually alright, though, there are some mishaps with this driver:

First my hdmi screen had scale down, leaving black borders around, even though the catalyst control said the correct native resolution, this turned out to be a underscan that fglrx does and I've finally managed to fix it. Other caveat is that the screen simply won't suspend or turn off( via software), DPMS actually works, forcing it turns the screen blank for some seconds but something does not allow the screen to sleep.

Performance wise it seems pretty good though, everything is pretty smooth, being able to play games maxed out on resolution and ultra settings, though, I still haven't tested out that many games.

The open-source radeon on the other hand, well its open-source, fully xorg and linux compatible, which is a major plus point. It seem it has come a long way, supporting lot of features and providing better performance in some cases.

Before installing Catalyst I had issues with mesa and steam, steam would complain about not finding the 32bit libraries, this is however a steam runtime issue, maybe it could already be fixed.

Ubuntu :: ATI Catalyst - Unable To Get The System To Work With Fglrx?

General :: Make Display Switchable Between Two Windows?

Aug 29, 2011

I must display two different windows (different application) on a single X display/screen., with a small sticky window that display buttons to switch from one (virtual) screen to the other.

Although I thought this would be an easy task for a simple window manager like fvwm, I didn't get it to work.

I've tried fvwm in combination with the FvwmPager, but I keep getting problems to place the different windows in the different virtual desk or page (automatically).

e.g. if you do: xterm -title "Hello" and xterm -title "There", I want Hello to go to virtual screen 1 and There to go to virtual screen 2.

I've also tried using metacity and switching between workspaces.

Is there an example configuration available? I'm not fixed on a specific window manager.

Ubuntu :: Ati Graphics Drivers Don't Appear To Work?

Aug 18, 2010

While trying live usb versions of different gnome and kde distributions, i noticed very unusable performance, however since i read that live media versions of linux did not perform well, i merely assumed that was the reason.

The sad thing is though, i installed ubuntu 10.4 x64 and i am still having the same problems. The only way to get the system slightly usable is to completely disable desktop effects. However, even then, it sort of feels like windows xp before you have installed graphics drivers - like it's not using the hardware at all.

Even the little fish screensaver is basically unrunnable.

My graphics card is an ati radeon x1950 pro AGP version. I read on their site that they only support up to x-org 11.4 and i heard that the linux distributions as of now are beyond that - so i cannot install the official drivers for it (whether they are any good anyway?). I saw in the package manager there are radeonhd drivers also, but i didn't really know what these are and this card is before ati started making their hd series.

So basically, i don't really know what to do or where to turn to in regards to this.

Some other small, unrelated questions are:

How can i increase the amount scrolled with each click of my scroll wheel so it's equivalent to windows? it seems to be one line at the moment, where as in windows i think it is something like 3 - whatever the case, it seems painfully slow.

Also, of my 5 button intellimouse explorer, strangely, the extra forward and back buttons seem to work, but the middle click button doesn't - or at least, holding it in and dragging the mouse to scroll doesn't seem to work - or should it be used for something different in linux?

Ubuntu :: 3D Acceleration Does Not Work - Low Graphics Mode

Sep 4, 2010

For some reason after updating, somewhere my system is messed up where my 3d acceleration doesn't work. I found a workaround though, I can get it to work when I reboot, and manually select my OS at the grub2 menu by pressing enter. It doesn't work all the time this way, but most the time it does allow 3d acceleration to work almost normal. If I let the grub2 timer count down to auto select it will never be 3d accelerated, and prompts me it's going to run in low-graphics mode and I'm given an option to Restart X. Ok that's one part of it...

Now with my workaround say I got 3d acceleration to work, when I go to System > Preferences > Appearance : and for Visual Effects I select "Normal" (was on none). It will apply fine, until I reboot it gets set back to none. So I'm having to manually put everything back (graphics) every time I boot, this is a horrible bug. Then onto another aspect of this wonderful update. All my letters and numbers on the keyboard are normal, except when I use control and ALT, they don't seem to be mapped correctly because I can't use any of my Keyboard Shortcuts.

Ubuntu :: Graphics Card Didn't Work

Feb 11, 2011

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 3078-tx. It is was a great laptop when it was running windows 7 but when I tried installing Ubuntu, I slowly began to hate it more and more. The issue is with the ATI and Intel switchable graphics card. Ubuntu installs fine and things seem to be great but I cant use the better graphics effects in ubuntu. I installed the driver that ubuntu provides for ATI and it didnt work and ubuntu booted into a terminal etc.. and I had to put it back to the way it was before. After sometime researching on the internet I know the problem is with the swtichable graphics.

Unfortunatley there is no option to turn off switchable graphic in my bios and hp arent much of a help. I dont know what to do now ? Is there any way to get switchable graphics to w ork with linux, is there way to get version of the bios that lets me disable it ? any variations of ubuntu or linux that it works with. I would prefer to use the ATI if i have to disable one or the other cause Im usually running on ac power anyways.

Feb 26, 2011

I have been trying to get the advanced graphics for compiz, emerald, and cairo dock working for a few days now, but alas, I have failed horribly. I tried to uninstall compiz and emerald a few days ago (stupidly) and since then, these problems have arisen. I tried seeking help on ubuntuforums.org, but they were unable to help. You can see the entire thread at the following link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694800&page=2

If you want a detailed list of everything I've done, you can go to that site, but here's a summary: I entered a series of code that I was lead to believe would eradicate compiz from my system so that I could go through with a full reinstallation. However, the result was that I now can't load any advanced graphics from emerald, compiz or cairo dock. I've tried reinstalling the entire operating system, but I'm getting the same problem. I also tried a live CD for 10.10, but with the same results.

I don't know if this is a relevant piece of information, but one thing of note is that I typed "compiz --replace" into the terminal and got the following:

Code:

WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug!

Again, I don't know if that helps at all, but there it is...
