I currently have Windows 7/Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot, and have decided to get rid of Windows. So I booted up the Ubuntu installation CD which gives the following options on install:So my question is: will my personal files (which I have on partition 'D:', separate from the Windows installation partition) be erased with this option?
View 5 RepliesWhen I choose the network password type WPA for example it doesn't work. Currently on my Dell Inspiron 1750 64 Bit am dual booting Ubuntu and Linux mint. I have the driver installed for the wifi card (Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver). Installed on both Ubuntu and Linux Mint, I don't know if there the exact same but very similar if not. So now I will get to the problem. When I click the wifi network button (Ubuntu is top right on panel, Linux Mint is bottom right on panel) and click the network I want to join the pass key box pops up.
But when I click the down arrow (WPA & WPA2 Personel selected by default) it just highlights the default selection, already stated. The weird thing is it does it for both Linux Mint and Ubuntu now. See, it didn't do that before I installed Linux mint and just had ubuntu. Wish I could post a screen shot but it would be a hassle without having the computer with Internet. I tried changing themes still does the same thing. Right when I installed the driver it worked fine with my home internet where I installed it using a ehternet cable. But now that I am trying to connect to a new network and it does this.
I recently decided to venture into the world of Linux/GNU by installing Ubuntu.
Before installing, I had a 190gb partition for windows 7 and 45gb of unallocated space. Through Wubi, I used the advanced partition editor to make a 6gb swap partition and a 22gb root partition for Ubuntu. All went well, but when I rebooted, I was unable to choose linux.
I installed Ubuntu by using Unetbootin to put the Ubuntu ISO on my USB drive. After installing, I disconnected the USB drive, and I was unable to choose the linux kernel option on the GRUB menu. When I do, my system just restarts and presents me with the GRUB menu again. However, windows 7 boots up perfectly.
I'm assuming that GRUB is somehow trying to boot the linux kernel from the USB. How do I change it to boot from the installation I made on my harddrive?
I have Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop currently and my mom would like to have it on hers as well. However, she does not want to get rid of Windows 7, or use Wubi (for some reason). So, my only choice is to dual boot it. While I was installing it onto my laptop there was an option to choose the partitioning. There wasn't an option to do this on my her laptop though because you can only have 4 partitions on a hard drive apparently. The partitions are:
NAME (TYPE)
System (NTFS)
C: (NTFS)
Recovery (NTFS)
HP TOOLS (FAT32)
Is there anyway to backup a partition (Like Recovery) and make it bootable from a flash drive/CD? Or is there any other work around from this?
Using UNetBootin on Windows, I flashed a USB keydrive with the Ubuntu 10.04 Minimal CD and proceeded to boot up a brand new PC.
Problem is, after choosing Install, language/keyboard, and then a repository from which to download files, the installer just stops there. I tried two different repositories, to no avail. The network hardware is correctly detected and set through DHCP.
Has someone seen this? Should I use an other option?

What I'd like to do is install Windows and several different versions of Linux on the same system. After everything is installed, I'd like to switch between operating systems *from inside the operation systems*.
Example: I'm inside Windows but I want to reboot into Ubuntu 9.04. I need to run a command to update the boot manager so it knows to boot into Ubuntu 9.04.
I do not want to walk to the physical box to make a menu selection. EDIT: I'd like to be able to switch between Windows 7 and Ubuntu (9.04, 10.04, and 10.10)
i've just built my own debian distro with simple-cdd, based on the latest release of lenny. everything is working fine, except for:
first, i couldn't set a default keyboard layout up in preseed file. i tried all these settings below, but none of them worked:

It goes on and one like this. I'm stuck using the LiveCD for now (Jaunty) so I have some limitations.
Fresh install from the new CD (via BitTorrent). Installation seemed to go cleanly, with no errors or warnings, but a long delay while some files were downloading from the overloaded servers. However, after the reboot, the machine was unusable. Can't log in because it won't recognize any characters coming from the keyboard when I try to type my password. Hardware is a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad R52 with 1.5 GB RAM. Extremely vanilla machine. Possible wrinkle in that I'm trying another VM this time around, using VMware Player 3.0.1. Right now I'm assuming this installation is dead and non-recoverable.

I have VirtualBox up and running, and the installation is working, but for some bizarre reason...the Virtual Drive isn't letting me type into to complete the Installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I am currently using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I know a little bit, like what a DNS server is and such, but I am hoping somebody can shed some more light on the subject.I am pretty sure I won't need Postgresql or a print server, as the purpose of my server is to provide a low end platform that I can work on my php projects. View 4 Replies View RelatedThe title says it all. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my PS3, but the keyboard isn't typing. I can't complete the install, because I can't type anything. I've followed all the steps properly, everything goes smoothly, the mouse works just fine, and the capslock and numlock lights light up on the keyboard, and toggle when I press the corresponding buttons. The keyboard even works at the kboot prompt. After I choose the partition to use, I have to enter my information to continue. Without being able to type, I can't progress. The keyboard obviously works, since I can type just fine at the kboot prompt.This one's got me scratching my head. I'm going to try a 9.04 cd tomorrow, see if that works, but I was really hoping to get 9.10 on there.

I use Liveusb-creator and boot from usb.It works well and I can use fedora15 just like livecd.But when I install fedora to hard disk,I meet a problem and I don't know how to solve it.
The installation procedure comes "Which type of installation would you like?".There's five options 1."Use All Space" 2."Replace Existing Linux System" 3."Shrink Current System" 4."Use Free Space" 5."Create Custom Layout".I've already got 10G unallocated space,so I select "Use Free Space".But the problem is that the fedora installer popups a messagebox says something that means that I don't have enough space to allocate to fedora15.
I come back to "Which type of installation would you like?" and select "Create Custom Layout".The installer display 4 entries of my hard disk:sda1 unknown 0M, sda2 100M windows remain partition, sda3 with capacity 39900M, sda4 with capacity 112625M.The partition display of my hard disk is so strange and there is no free space.
Is the problem of win7 "Disk Management" or "Fedora Installer"? How can I really get some free space to install fedora15?
I can't boot Ubuntu 9.10 on this computer (on my other computer it works fine). When I try to run it from the CD or USB I see a screen full of colored lines, and when I try to use safe graphics I get to the shell but the whole screen is blinking and I can't type any command. Anyone knows how to solve it? My graphics card is GeForce 7300 LE and on my other computer (the one that can run Ubuntu find) has an on-board graphics card.

When using advanced install I am eventually given the option to format the drive and ultimately the option to pick what sort of partition table type. I am not sure what to pick; it appears to have msdos as a default. Here are my options:
aix
amiga
bsd
dvh
gpt
mac
msdos (default?)
pc98
sun
loop
Some appear to be obviously bad choices; but I am not sure. Any ideas on which would be a better pick for me? I have already used msdos and it seems to work fine.
I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

I just got an Acer netbook Aspire One. I put the Ubuntu remix on it successfully, and was using it for several days without problems. Now all of a sudden when I turn on my computer I get a grub error message with a command prompt. I've tried following the direction to restore grub but I'm getting stuck right away on the command to mount my ubuntu partition. After I type "sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt", I keep getting the error message "mount: you must specify the filesystem type."

I recently upgrade my armel NAS from etch to squeeze. During the partitioning step of the installation I intentionally left unmounted the data partition (900GB formatted XFS) but after the installation I'm not able to mount it.
I edited the fstab file adding the last line
And tried a mount but I get the message
So i noticed throught lsmod that I don't have the module for xfs
Tried installing xfsprogs but it didn't helped. So I searched for xfs-modules but seems it doesn't exists for armel architecture. Am I right? What does it means? That XFS is not supported in armel Squeeze? Assumed I can't transfer/backup 900GB of partition, is there a way to convert it on-the-fly to a supported filesystem format?

I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.
