Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Type Password To Login?
Apr 29, 2010
Fresh install from the new CD (via BitTorrent). Installation seemed to go cleanly, with no errors or warnings, but a long delay while some files were downloading from the overloaded servers. However, after the reboot, the machine was unusable. Can't log in because it won't recognize any characters coming from the keyboard when I try to type my password. Hardware is a Lenovo (IBM) ThinkPad R52 with 1.5 GB RAM. Extremely vanilla machine. Possible wrinkle in that I'm trying another VM this time around, using VMware Player 3.0.1. Right now I'm assuming this installation is dead and non-recoverable.

I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?
this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.

I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?

I newly installed Ububtu 8,04.3. I formatted my hard drive and erased Windows XP and tried to do the manual partitioning but don't have enough knowledge so picked the guided tour. Everything seemed to install but when I restarted it comes to "computer log-in" and wants a user name and password. I put in the user name I chose during installation and tried to put in the password but it wouldn'd type in - it also seemed to want a name for "computer." Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've been struggling to learn computer stuff on my own.

1. I am currently using a basic fedora 14. I had a fedora 8 DVD that contained many packages including its installation (I mean it was bootable and had its iso image. Now my question is that is there any way by which I can install the packages(like OpenOffice.org) from that DVD to fedora 14? I have a slow internet connection and its not possible for me to download large files.
2. I installed some packages via yum. My friend also has fedora 14 but unfortunately he doesnt have a internet connection to download the files via yum and install them. Are the .rpm files downloaded via yum stored in some specific folder, so that I can transfer those files via a flash drive to his computer and install them directly there?
3. Is there a way to autologin my account so that I dont have to type my password everytime I switch on my PC?
4. Everytime and every session I try to access a ntfs partition, it asks for my root password. Any tricks to bypass this?

It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I am new to ubuntu and I've installed it but I didn't use it too much. Now I was trying to login into ubuntu but I forgot the root password. Can I login into ubuntu or change the root password. I didn't make any other user than the installation were asking me. If I try to reinstall the ubuntu, the setup will help me to choose the same partition (to overwrite on the previous ubuntu)?

When booting from the Ubuntu 11.04 CD, it asks for user name and password to install. I downloaded the iso twice and did a checksum. Do I need a user name and password before installing? What is the user name and password? I read the documentation and cannot find any entry about user name and password needed when booting fron CD.

I thought these were the same password?In-fact, they WERE the same password on the set-up I currently have. But now, weirdly, I can log in fine but I the exact same password is not using in order to perform admin tasks.I've tried a recovery mode, console, and then "password (username)" in order to reset the password. This does reset the password I need to use to log in, but the password still does not work for performing admin tasks

The author (somewhere on these Ubuntu forums directed........ Ctrl + Alt + F1 which I thought was going to be the "Terminal" but nothing similar. I have about a half dozen different names/passwords for Ubuntu but none will work to log in. How to get out of this text console and back to Ubuntu GUI? And, how to read my lost LogIn name and password for this "Text Console"?

Suddenly Debian started rejecting my user pw and I have to login as root. Perhaps this is a coincidence, but this started when I re-booted after adding Russian keyboard layout in etc/default/keyboard. The Russian keyboard added successfully.
Being logged in as root, renewed the pw of my user account (actually assigned the same as wes previously), got confirmation the the pw has been changed. Reloaded. Yet it keeps complaining that the pw is wrong.

i am having a problem with the installation with ubuntu 10.10 during the installation, i was entering my setup info (login password, timezone, etc.) when everything stopped working, it wouldnt let me continue, the forward button wouldnt work. i let it set for a good 30 minutes but it wouldnt do anything.
so unable to continue, i restarted and tried to boot from my cd drive and now it wont boot from the drive, and since i let ubuntu delete my windows partition, i cant boot from it so i basically have a blank hard drive. the cd drive will boot other cds because i booted hirens boot cd in an attempt to make sure the cd drive was functioning and ran diagnostics to make sure the drive was alright.

I am having a dual boot system vista/ubuntu 9.04. Till recently whenever I wanted to access my vista partition I had to type in the administrative password. However, strangely, for last few days whenever I access the vista partition I don't need to type the password. The partition is just mounted and I can access the files. I would like to know the reasons and if possible to get back the previous situation (needing password to access the vista partition).

I've been having problems whenever I'm asked for my password inside the Terminal. The most recent one happens when I type this
Code:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer
It says this
Code:
[sudo] password for ben:
But then I can't type anything. I try to but nothing happens.

I needed to use Synaptic Package Manager to install an app, but the dialog box ("enter the Administrative Password") that pops up before you can use Synaptic doesn't recognize my password ("incorrect password). I tried typing it into a text editor and it's spelled right, caps lock not turned on or anything.
In Terminal, sudo recognizes it, and it is recognized when I log into Ubuntu. I'm the sole user, I have admin privileges, I've been doing admin things.
I just now did System > Administration > Users and Groups and got a dialog box saying
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)"
Moving past that, I changed my user password, and Ubuntu authenticated it.
How do you launch Synaptic Package Manager from the command line?

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.

I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server. What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?

In the VeloxBoot.sh, if I don't press any key, my application starts after a timeout. If the user presses a key I want to have a login prompt. Unfortunately, if I start /bin/login, I have a prompt with login, but once I enter my login, it does not ask for a password and it says wrong password
