How can I be sure to complete the update?
Updating from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS with some 'stop'
new kernel not in use, and grub setup, using 'local'
the now new 10.04 LTS as it calls itself is loading and large parts working.
I have an odd issue that someone has hopefully seen before or can provide a next step. Firstly, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 about 7 months ago and things ran fine. I then did an upgrade (via apt-get) to the 9.10 kernel: Current: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Still, I had a properly functioning system. I then decided to install selinux since I was interested in learning how to set it up and get familiar with it's security features. When I was installing it, it got stuck on the portion where it had to modify Grub. It got stuck in a similar point as the following:

When running Update Manager I am given an error message and it won't complete the update. I tried uninstalling the program clementine.

I installed the Eclipse IDE using Ubuntu packages. (Version 3.5.1. Package name:eclipse).A few days back, version 3.5.2 was released. I would like to update, so I added the following websites to the list of available ones:

I then tried with Check for Updates. While on my Mac installation this results in an update to 3.5.2, on Ubuntu the program says there is nothing to update. If I try to install manually, choosing Install New Software and the then selecting the Eclipse Platform 3.5.2, I get the following error:
Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency.

Only one of the following can be installed at once:

it is possible to update the packaged verison of Eclipse or if I should install the binary from the website?
I used to have great times with Ubuntu prior to 9.10,dual booting with Windows XP, Vista, and 7.How after installing Ubuntu 9.10, there are more than 200 updates. Several times Ubuntu cannot complete the update.I installed half of the updates, still no good. After the update I can boot into Win. 7 but not into Ubuntu. wesley is my login name; pc-1 is the name of my pc.What must I do to fix this? or, log in, or whatever.I can delete Ubuntu and re-install it, and I've done that several times, but the updates come up again and that is what messing me up again.
View 13 Replies View RelatedHere is my problem: I am using ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed on a HP tx2 1274nr laptop. I can get my wireless to work on both the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom STA wireless driver. Though only one can be active at a time.
My problem lies in I can activate either driver until I reboot the laptop. then it becomes inactive.
Is there a fix for this problem. I would like to have my wireless active after restarting.
My internet connectivity is not that fast. Since I am using Squeeze, there will be very frequent updates.
My problem is that I am not able to download all the update in one go and to complete the upgrade. As the number of files to be downloaded and upgraded increases, I can't seem to be able to reach the end point to complete any update.
Can aptitude upgrade just the files that have been downloaded so far, and resume downloading the rest in the next attempt? MS Windows will update the OS with whatever patches downloaded without waiting for the rest if I prematurely shutdown the pc.
Just did the most recent set of updates late yesterday (kernel and Nvidia). Since the update I cannot get to a login screen - just blinking cursor. In fact the cursor blinks for a bit then disapears only to reappear as if there are repeated attempts to complete a process unsuccessfully.
The update replaced the xorg.conf. I tied a couple of revisions, inlcuding replacing it with the earlier working xorg.conf. No luck.
Hardware is MSI K9N6GM board with Nvidia Geforce 6100 nforce 430.
I Have not been able to complete an update since i clean installed Lynx: Perhaps you'l understand my situation better than me by looking at these messages:

latest update to 11.3 a complete failure afterwards on reboot I'm instructed that I must first install kernel and to strike any key to exit which return me to grub menu. thats it for me and Osuse. 11.3 has been one bug after another and to much for me overcome. I will return once a day to see if anyone can fix this/

I have a kind o Kubuntu-Studio 9.10
I installed from Ubuntu Karmic minimal, so i did install KDE.
i have update-manager-kde, update-notifier-kde and kpackage kit installed. for manual installing i use synaptic though.
in the repositry-manager the automatic updates are anabled (daily).
but it is not checking for updates. i checked manually in synaptic, and there are updates available.
so, how do i let it check automaticly for updates?
I just upgraded from fc9 to fc10 via the live cd. All went smooth. I tried to run yum update, but it keeps failing. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the repos, so I copied the repo files from another pc I have that is running fc10 and is able to run yum update.
Still get errors:

I'm having a problem with this command: sudo yum update
I get the error: "Loaded plugins: presto refresh - packagekit
error:no such table: packages.
I created a group using vi /etc/sudoers
saved it using :wq!
but can't get it to work.
Update manager and software center both run, but when I click on "install," they both just sit there and don't respond. If I run software center from a command line, I get the error "WARNING - _on_trans_error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.Failed." (There are no updates right now, so I can't get an error from the update manager.) Apparently they aren't invoking gksudo or whatever it is they need to elevate privileges. I can get around this by running them as root, but it is kind of annoying. I'm really surprised that no one else has had this problem, but I've searched it a number of times and I can't find any indication of someone having the same symptoms.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI think I have encountered a problem in the way that lucid handles proxy servers. I was having problems running apt-get update due to a firewall at my work. I also noted that I was getting 403 Forbidden for wget. So I went to System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy from my account (which has administrator privileges) and input the http address for the proxy server, and then clicked the button to "Apply Systemwide...".
Following that change, wget worked from my account, but whenever I tried to sudo apt-get update, I got the 403 forbidden response again, even though I could wget the same files that apt-get reported as forbidden. I figured that this was a problem with the root account, and so I typed
Code:
However, upon exiting from the root account, and trying to run sudo apt-get update again, I got the 403 forbidden code again!
So, it seems that the proxy settings are not being applied systemwide.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed in my laptop through a windows installation and I want to make a new, complete, install so I can boot directly in Ubuntu (and change some configuration choices I didn't get right in the first place). Is there any (as simple as posible) way to save my actual data (users, software installed, personal files...) as a whole so I can "install" all that back to the "new" Ubuntu installation?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI ran Ubuntu 9.10 back in the days and when 10.04 Beta 1 was released I upgraded it by using the update-manager -d. My question is, if I use the upgrade-manager -d feature will it be like an actual beta 2 when it gets released and later on will it be the same as the full final version. Or must I do a complete re-installation if I want to run the final version of 10.04?

Now the Update Manager wants to take my system to 10.04, but then says it is 'not supported with this tool'.Do I need to do a complete re-install of the OS? Is there a reasonable way to get to 9.10 without a complete re-install?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am having a problem installing ubuntu 10.10. i had windows vista and used ubuntu inside windows with no problem. then, i wanted to reset my vista to its factory conditions (just to clean up space and get rid of hidden or unnecessary things) using the recovery disk - and the recovery disk partially worked, removed my os and didn't 'restore' anything. so i decided to just go all the way to ubuntu anyway, which was the plan all along, just sooner now.
i have the disk and i can easily make it to the 'try ubuntu' feature. however, when i try to actually install ubuntu, i make it all the way to the 'who are you page?' but the 'forward' button isn't accessible (which is how i noticed something might be wrong). this happens whether i try to install after trying ubuntu or if i try to direcly install without trying it first. i fill in the data, the installation says it's copying files, etc... and then, when it's done, it says 'ready when you are'. that's it. i can't click on 'forward', and none of the 'information about ubuntu' features and pics scroll by while the setup is taking place. i can't do anything at this point. the system isn't really frozen but it just does nothing. (i thought i might have to restart the computer but the only options i have are 'hibernate' and 'suspend'. also, once i manually restart everything it reloads all over again. when i take the disk out and restart, i see NOTHING. the vaio logo comes on, then the screen goes black and i see the cursor prompt but nothing else at all and i can't do anything at all.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer that's already running Windows Vista. I used the Wubi installer and it seemed to go through the installation fine (using the desktop, amd64 iso file). After rebooting, I get the dual boot option. However, on Ubuntu start-up, I get a display with the message stating Verifying Installation Files. It seems to go through some verification, but then it gets stuck. I see a bunch of lines with the words "ubuntu ubiquity" with hexadecimal values and regular words. The last hexadecimal values to appear are: 7f2698c50d8e, 7f2698fca815; the last regular word is "_target".
If I quit out of the verification, I am able to get onto the desktop area, but a message appears stating a parted_server crash occured. Also, my wireless connection doesn't work, but I suspect I need to install a driver.
I have downloaded the Wheezy DVD 1 and started the istallation process. The installation time is strangely very short in respect to the Squeeze release, anyway
The GRUB installation step fails. I terminated the installation without a bootloader and rebooted from DVD with the rescue boot option.
Now I asked for a console to try to manually install the bootloader but the following command:
# grub-install /dev/sda1
[where sda1 is my root partition]
gets the following message:
/bin/sh: grub-install: not found
What can I do?
