General :: Ubuntu Cannot Complete Update
Mar 19, 2010
I used to have great times with Ubuntu prior to 9.10,dual booting with Windows XP, Vista, and 7.How after installing Ubuntu 9.10, there are more than 200 updates. Several times Ubuntu cannot complete the update.I installed half of the updates, still no good. After the update I can boot into Win. 7 but not into Ubuntu. wesley is my login name; pc-1 is the name of my pc.What must I do to fix this? or, log in, or whatever.I can delete Ubuntu and re-install it, and I've done that several times, but the updates come up again and that is what messing me up again.

the now new 10.04 LTS as it calls itself is loading and large parts working.

I have an odd issue that someone has hopefully seen before or can provide a next step. Firstly, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 about 7 months ago and things ran fine. I then did an upgrade (via apt-get) to the 9.10 kernel: Current: Linux 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:02:15 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Still, I had a properly functioning system. I then decided to install selinux since I was interested in learning how to set it up and get familiar with it's security features. When I was installing it, it got stuck on the portion where it had to modify Grub. It got stuck in a similar point as the following:

Here is my problem: I am using ubuntu 10.10 64 bit installed on a HP tx2 1274nr laptop. I can get my wireless to work on both the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom STA wireless driver. Though only one can be active at a time.
My problem lies in I can activate either driver until I reboot the laptop. then it becomes inactive.
Is there a fix for this problem. I would like to have my wireless active after restarting.

My internet connectivity is not that fast. Since I am using Squeeze, there will be very frequent updates.
My problem is that I am not able to download all the update in one go and to complete the upgrade. As the number of files to be downloaded and upgraded increases, I can't seem to be able to reach the end point to complete any update.
Can aptitude upgrade just the files that have been downloaded so far, and resume downloading the rest in the next attempt? MS Windows will update the OS with whatever patches downloaded without waiting for the rest if I prematurely shutdown the pc.

Just did the most recent set of updates late yesterday (kernel and Nvidia). Since the update I cannot get to a login screen - just blinking cursor. In fact the cursor blinks for a bit then disapears only to reappear as if there are repeated attempts to complete a process unsuccessfully.
The update replaced the xorg.conf. I tied a couple of revisions, inlcuding replacing it with the earlier working xorg.conf. No luck.
Hardware is MSI K9N6GM board with Nvidia Geforce 6100 nforce 430.

I installed the Eclipse IDE using Ubuntu packages. (Version 3.5.1. Package name:eclipse).A few days back, version 3.5.2 was released. I would like to update, so I added the following websites to the list of available ones:
[URL]
I then tried with Check for Updates. While on my Mac installation this results in an update to 3.5.2, on Ubuntu the program says there is nothing to update. If I try to install manually, choosing Install New Software and the then selecting the Eclipse Platform 3.5.2, I get the following error:
Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency.
Software being installed: Eclipse Platform 3.5.2.M20100211-1343 (org.eclipse.platform.ide 3.5.2.M20100211-1343)
Software currently installed: Eclipse Platform 3.5.1 (Eclipse Platform 3.5.1)
Only one of the following can be installed at once:

it is possible to update the packaged verison of Eclipse or if I should install the binary from the website?

i am having a problem installing ubuntu 10.10. i had windows vista and used ubuntu inside windows with no problem. then, i wanted to reset my vista to its factory conditions (just to clean up space and get rid of hidden or unnecessary things) using the recovery disk - and the recovery disk partially worked, removed my os and didn't 'restore' anything. so i decided to just go all the way to ubuntu anyway, which was the plan all along, just sooner now.
i have the disk and i can easily make it to the 'try ubuntu' feature. however, when i try to actually install ubuntu, i make it all the way to the 'who are you page?' but the 'forward' button isn't accessible (which is how i noticed something might be wrong). this happens whether i try to install after trying ubuntu or if i try to direcly install without trying it first. i fill in the data, the installation says it's copying files, etc... and then, when it's done, it says 'ready when you are'. that's it. i can't click on 'forward', and none of the 'information about ubuntu' features and pics scroll by while the setup is taking place. i can't do anything at this point. the system isn't really frozen but it just does nothing. (i thought i might have to restart the computer but the only options i have are 'hibernate' and 'suspend'. also, once i manually restart everything it reloads all over again. when i take the disk out and restart, i see NOTHING. the vaio logo comes on, then the screen goes black and i see the cursor prompt but nothing else at all and i can't do anything at all.

I have a very simple bash script that just runs a series of backups using tar; for example, one of the lines reads:tar -czvpf /srv/backups/backup_home.tar.gz /homeThis script is scheduled to run every Friday, but occasionally I will schedule it to run before using 'at'. The script is located on the same disk as the backups are saved, I then transfer them off the machine manually (I've yet to automate this). I am only compressing files that are located on the server's disk, no files are being transferred over the network at all.
The problem is, occasionally it appears to be causing the 'server' I have running all the time to completely freeze. When this happens the machine does not power down and there are no entries in the log that indicate a problem. Everything simply stops until I press the reset button. Note that this issue also happens when you run the script manually and not just when it is run via cron or at.I *think* this might be happening when a large file is being compressed, but I'm not certain.

It's about creating a complete backup of my machine. What I want to do is completely backup my whole computer, everything!, because I've got it just right. If something were to go wrong then I want to restore right back to the way the system is right now (from a rescue disk). I know that using dd to do a byte level backup would be best but I read that it's not all that great for restoring the system (HDD's sizes must be the same).
Rsync looks favorite but can it copy the root directory. i.e. "rsync -a / /media/backup/" and all the partitions. I just not sure whether it can do the whole computer. Dump is another tool but it seems to have dependencies to tool versions. And again I don't know if it will do the whole system and how easy it is to restore. There is a tool called FSArchiver that looks to do what I want and it comes part of SystemRescueCd (a bootable CD used to fix computers). It turns out that the backup I'm looking to do is at the file system level where the tools above are really file level backups.

.After trying to instal 10.40 as a "guest" of Windows7 in its own partition on drive D I got all the way thru then re-booted to finish the install as requested. At that point after reboot I selected Ubuntu from the boot menu then it hung up after quickly displaying and overwriting some option numbers - probably for GRUB
I uninstalled 10.40 then tried Ubuntu 9.4. It worked better and gave me an option menu after the install reboot. If I chose "normal" it also hung up.I was succesful by chosing one of the other GRUB choices that it gave me.Now everything works but with an older version.

I am a windows user personally, but my daughter has got a Elonex Onet+ machine, which I understand uses Linux. I have tried googling this information but I am really struggling.Apparently it is either debian or mipsel (2 different webpages say two different things) and as I am not familiar with Linux at all I don't know how to find out from the machine itself. The problem I am having is needing to update pidgin, the pre installed version will not connect to MSN, something regarding protocol, so I downloaded the most recent version of pidgin (2.7.3) from the site but cannot figure out how to install it (I am only used to windows machines)

What I need to do is to extract one complete column (file size) from the output of ls -lS but while doing so in some rows I have a single space but in some other rows I have 2 or 3 spaces like some file sizes are different with 30 bytes 400 bytes and some 4000 bytes. So when I extract the output of ls using | cut -d ' ' -f5 i get the value which has only one space i.e. I get 4000 as output because 400 has 2 spaces seperated and 30 is 3 spaces separated. So how to get the file size column from the ls output?

I just backed up a complete copy of my C drive which has been partitioned 3 ways to have both windows and Linux mint on it with the loader which comes up when the computer is turned on. My question is that recently I used Norton ghost to backup my system and it failed to reinstall the grub. Will clonezilla reinstall the boot loader on my drive if I make a complete restore of the entire C drive. Is there any thing else I should be concerned about upon restore which I should take into account? I'm fine now but am asking concerning the future possibility of a restore.

But the distribution doesn't by default come with the C development environment and I am facing some issues when trying to install the gcc.Is there any other small Linux distribution which by default has the required packages for the C development. And also I don't want additional software which takes up lot of space but still would like to have the graphical environment.

I just bought a new laptop and installed Fedora 14 on it. I now just noticed that I must have been very sloppy when selecting the download CD, because somehow I managed to install the 32-bit i686 version instead of the 64-bit x86_64.
Is there a way to change without wiping out the existing install and do a reinstall?

I'm trying to figure out the effects of some of the more unusual combinations of modes and file types. For instance, what does SGID do on a directory? What do SUID and SGID do on files that aren't executable? What effect does execute have on a FIFO?
Does anyone know where I can find the complete documentation for file modes under Linux? It's not in the chmod(1) man page. I can't find it in the documentation directory of the kernel tarball either. I thought it would be in the POSIX specs, but I can't find it if it is.
