I ran Ubuntu 9.10 back in the days and when 10.04 Beta 1 was released I upgraded it by using the update-manager -d. My question is, if I use the upgrade-manager -d feature will it be like an actual beta 2 when it gets released and later on will it be the same as the full final version. Or must I do a complete re-installation if I want to run the final version of 10.04?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 installed in my laptop through a windows installation and I want to make a new, complete, install so I can boot directly in Ubuntu (and change some configuration choices I didn't get right in the first place). Is there any (as simple as posible) way to save my actual data (users, software installed, personal files...) as a whole so I can "install" all that back to the "new" Ubuntu installation?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was clean installing Ubuntu 10.04, and for some reason my machine crashed during the final stages (has been a bit unstable recently), when running the init scripts I think. As a result I think that some programs are not being run properly. For example, cups is never running - I have to start it to use printers. And CDs dont mount automatically. Here are the services states:

View 4 Replies View RelatedSomehow I've been really unlucky with Ubuntu 10.10. When I run the CD choose any of the three options offered by Grub, the system just waits for 20-30 seconds and gives me a screen with Green squares.

I have an Intel Dual Core 2.0Ghz PC with 8GB ram and an Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card. I have Ubuntu 10.04 on it which installs and works fine. its only the 10.10 that I have this problem with.

I am thinking about upgrading my home computer to the beta. Having been burned by Microsoft's RC program and reloading my kids computers, I wondering if I will be able to move to the final release when it comes out at the end of the month. If the upgrade path from Beta->LTS is a complete reinstall, I'll wait.

I can't install Ubuntu 11.04 32bit Desktop edition on my Dell Mini 10v. I followed the instructions from the Ubuntu website and made a bootable USB drive using the universal USB installer for windows. I put the usb drive on my netbook and prompted the boot options to boot from the usb drive. Once I got to the installation screen and attempt to install ubuntu on my hard drive it goes blank for a few moments, and a wall of text floods my screen and it stops installing.

Default state indicated by different icons. Interface option brought up by right-mouse-clicking on the qinternet/kinternet panel icon and choosing Settings/Various Settings/Startup tab. Note: Regardless of whether qinternet was running or not, internet communications via the relevant network interface still worked.
In case the failure of qinternet/smpppd was simply a PolicyKit issue, I edited /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf to ensure that the relevant user had the necessary privilege to run smpppd (I assume that qinternet can be ignored since it is just the front end for smpppd) e.g.

This made no difference, SO FOR DIAGNOSTIC PURPOSES ONLY, I logged in as root after first removing the power from the network switches externally connected to each network interface (isolating the local host). I then ran qinternet but once again, the Interface option was greyed out. This confirmed fairly conclusively that lack of privilege was not responsible for the qinternet/smpppd problem.

I'm so excited to see how nicely Lubuntu 10.04 runs on my EeePC. I went ahead and installed it, knowing that it's just the second beta. Everything seems to be going nicely, but when I did a "sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" it showed there were tons of updates (about 90MB worth). I saw updates for Chrome, the kernel, xserver-xorg, etc. I understand this is just a beta operating system and is not recommended to be used as a primary OS, but I'm just so excited and can't wait. If I stay with this install, and keep updating, would I eventually make my way to the final release? Or would you recommend doing a reinstall with the final image?

The GRUB installation step fails. I terminated the installation without a bootloader and rebooted from DVD with the rescue boot option.
Now I asked for a console to try to manually install the bootloader but the following command:
# grub-install /dev/sda1
[where sda1 is my root partition]
gets the following message:
/bin/sh: grub-install: not found

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer that's already running Windows Vista. I used the Wubi installer and it seemed to go through the installation fine (using the desktop, amd64 iso file). After rebooting, I get the dual boot option. However, on Ubuntu start-up, I get a display with the message stating Verifying Installation Files. It seems to go through some verification, but then it gets stuck. I see a bunch of lines with the words "ubuntu ubiquity" with hexadecimal values and regular words. The last hexadecimal values to appear are: 7f2698c50d8e, 7f2698fca815; the last regular word is "_target".
If I quit out of the verification, I am able to get onto the desktop area, but a message appears stating a parted_server crash occured. Also, my wireless connection doesn't work, but I suspect I need to install a driver.

The problem is that it has no way to connect to the net because it has no lan card.I was thinking of installing Mint or Ubuntu since he just needs it only for Word & Spreadsheet stuffs.I was thinking of cloning my own Mint on a USB pen drive and dump it on his HD.

I was a Vim user in Windows. I heard that Ubuntu comes with a compact version of Vim called vim-tiny.
I wonder if this latest version of Ubuntu comes with vim-tiny or the complete version (is there any way of checking which one is being opened with the vim command in the terminal?). If it is vim-tiny, how can I install the complete version of Vim and start it inside the terminal with the "vim" command? Because right now vim-tiny (I guess) starts by typing "vim" in the terminal.
will the vimrc of the tiny version interfere with the complete version of Vim?
