Debian Installation :: Installer Does Not See Hard Drives

I'm trying to install jessie on a new computer, but the installer does not see the hard drives. I copied the DVD-1 iso to a usb stick with dd (also tried the netinstall) and it boots, but when I get to partitioning, it only sees the usb drive. If I go to another virtual console and run dmesg or fdisk -l, all drives are seen correctly.
Back up a little - at first I tried the on-board raid, but when the installer couldn't see the drives, I went back into the bios and reset the sata mode to ahci. I've got it set to use bios/legacy OS, or whatever it's called, fast boot is disabled. Even if only one drive is connected, the debian installer does not see it. Then I read up on the fake raid I was trying to use and decided to go with software raid. Can't do that if there's no hard drives listed in the partitioner.
My own installer (refractainstaller) does work, and I've installed jessie with it a couple of times onto one drive, but I really wanted to use raid and lvm, and my installer doesn't do either of those things. No optical drive, but if that's the only way to install, I'll pull the one from my current box and use it for the install. I think I still have a blank CD or DVD lying around.
Hardware:
ASUS H97-PLUS LGA 1150
Intel core i3 (the cheapest one at newegg)
WD Black 1TB drives (2)
GSkill cheap memory, which already passed a memtest.

The Fedora installer won't display my two SATA hard drives. I've tried both the x86_64 live CD and DVD. On the live CD, fdisk -l displayed nothing. However, if I click "Specialized Storage Devices" a devices shows up as "BIOS RAID set (stripe)" with a capacity equal to both my hard drives. I don't even have RAID enabled in BIOS - it is set to AHCI. Other os installers display the hard drive correctly.

ASUS M4A78T-E 790GX motherboard

I am attempting to install on a HP ML110 box. It has 2 SATA drives installed. From the live cd I can do fdisk -l and see both drives, I can see both from GPated but during the actual install it doesn't see any drives in which to install.

I'm trying to setup a dual boot system with Windows Vista 64 (already installed) and Ubuntu 10.10. I added a new drive which is identical to the one Vista is installed on. When I boot into the LiveCD I can see and mount the second drive and edit it in Gparted. However, when I use the installer it will only bring up the drive that already has Vista installed.

Debian 8 installer does not detect the hard drive during installation
I've recently tried to installed Debian 8. The problem is that the partition menu gives me these 3 options:
1. Configure iSCSI volumes
2. Undo changes to partitions
3. Finish partitioning and write changes to disk
There are no options for defining partitions or any hard drive during installation. After searching the internet i found that the problem because the solid state disk SSD cache. How I install a Debian 8 with computer which has a hard disk drive and a solid state disk cache.

Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

I have searched for this but can not find it. I want to install debian 6.0 squeeze on to both of my hard drives and run each as a seperate instance of debian, and be able to choose at boot up which one I want to run. I have an HP with 2 500 gig hard drives, running windows vista currently, processor is an intell quad 2 core 6600, nothing else on the pc for programs and such at this time. I would also like to keep the windows if possible to run other programs at a later time.

I have 2 identical hard drives that was used as a RAID0, the raid array was removed, and confirmed the removal with the raid utlity. Bios settings are not set to raid. So one hdd has WinXP occupying it, and I want to use the other hdd for ubuntu. For some reason, ubuntu installer still sees it as an array of both hdds. Gpart see them as both array and individual drives. Does anyone know how to correct this? M

We are try to install Fedora 12 or Fedora 13 x86_64 on HP Server Blade ProLiant BL460c G6. And when the installer try to find storage devices - it can not find any hard drivers. We are have message on screen - "Finding storage devices" and the installation process is not continue.... Fedora 10 and Fedora 11 x86_64 are installed very well. The device /dev/cciss/c0d0 is present in system and all it partitions - c0d0p1, c0d0p2 ... Command fdisk -l /dev/cciss/c0d0 has no any output.

When I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 (from CD or USB drive), and selected manual partitioning, the installer would not show all my drives.
However, when booting the life CD/USB, gparted or the Disk Utility did recognize all drives and partitions.
It turned out that one of my drives was marked as RAID partition, although I never used RAID!
Here the symptom:
When you run the installer and select "manual partitioning", the resulting list of drives and partitions is incomplete. In my example it was:
sda
- sda1
sdc
- sdc1

You may have multiple drives with the RAID metadata on it. In that case you need to repeat the above command for all those drives. Just make sure you don't wipe out your existing RAID, if you have one.
Reboot the system and see if it works.
P.S.: Also check your BIOS settings - do you have drives configured as RAID?

I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.

My PC configuration is as follows:
CPU: AMD Athlon II 245 X2
RAM: 2GB DDR2
MB: ASUS M2A74-AM
SATA DVD-Writer
WD 320GB SATA HDD.
SATA Controller is in AHCI mode in BIOS.
Partition Table:
1. Pri. (Windows 7 Ultimate)
2. Log. (Data)
3. Log. 15GB free space (want to install Linux in this partition)
I want to install Debian 5.0.4 from DVD. But the installer is not showing any partitions, it says entire hard disk is blank. But I ran 'fdisk -l' in the console, it shows the partitions correctly.

I have this laptop that I just reformatted in hopes of doing a dual boot between XP and FC4. It is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 (the Wal-Mart special). I reformatted the drive; the Windows partition is in NTFS and then I have a 10GB partition in FAT32 for Linux. When I try to install FC4, the disk boots into the installer, then it tells me that it does not recognize any hard drives (the disk in this laptop is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00). It asks me if I want to load any drivers, and I tried a few and still no success. Any way, after it goes through that, it tries to start anaconda and after that launches it goes to a black screen and nothing happens. So, did I do anything wrong in the Windows install that won't allow the disk to be found? The XP disk only allows a format in NTFS, otherwise I would have done FAT32 on the whole drive. Second, is the anaconda problem something related to the HDD issue, or does anyone think that it may be a separate issue?

I have a ssd cosair harddisk with both usb and sata connecters. If I connect it with sata anything is working fine, and I managed to install Fedora core 13.
But I also want to be able to use the harddisk when it is connected with usb and that causes problems.
When I boot the Fedora Core 13 dvd It can't detect my usb harddisk.
When booting in install mode it just don't detect the harddisk.
When booting the dvd in rescue mode it don't detect the harddisk, and it don't create any entries in /dev/ for the harddisk. It is like there is no disk at all.
I have tested this on 3 different computers, so it is not a problem with my specific motherboard. So either it is a problem between my harddisk and Fedora Core 13, or there is some problems with the usb drivers in the boot image used by the Fedora core 13 dvd.
The disk is working fine if I connect it via usb to an existing Windows install, so the usb connection is working.
I installed Fedora core 13 with the harddisk connected to sata and then re-connected the harddisk to usb. It then boot up, but complain about missing root filesystem. Most likely caused by missing usb driver in my kernel.
But anyway, what I really want is the ability to boot from both sata and usb, so I can take the harddisk with me and boot it on other computers with usb.
So is there a command which allows me to build an kernel image which can boot from usb or am I trying to do something which is not really supported?
I did update my fstab to use LABEL=myroot
There is 1 Windows partition(NTFS) and 1 linux partition on the disk. (No seperate /boot partition and no swap)

The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.

I've just put together a new machine and as I expected, there are some issues with hardware. I've just tried to set up the installation of ubuntu, got to the partitioning section and only my external hard drive is being picked up. The internal hard drive is a 1TB SATA drive plugged into a 6GB/s DATA port on my m/b (Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 running Intel i5 760 processor). I'm probably going to try the alternate CD to see if that works, but does anyone know if this is a common problem for any of my hardware? (I did a google but couldn't find anything).

I try to install Ubuntu on my new HTPC. I start Ubuntu with the Live CD and it boots fine. Then I want to start installing Ubuntu on my hard disk.Unfortunately the installer does not see my hard disk which has 1 empty ext4 partition. However, it can be seen and managed in GParted.

I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

I am trying to switch over my NAS from Win7 x64 to Debian 8.x Jessie. I have run into a few issues with the power management. When Idle my NAS should be consuming 25W, however it was consuming much more. The more hard disks I mounted, the higher the wattage.
I have followed a few tutorials but that has only been a partial succes.

Now there are two suggestions I found but both I was unable to implement.
The first suggestion was to mount using "noatime". However I do not know how to rewrite fstab because I am using ntfs for now (at least untill I get it working).

How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

I have two servers (A and B) which are identical. My idea was to have a software RAID 1 with both of them running and if server A craps out I wanted to swap the hard drives from server B into server A. When I tried to test this idea the network driver doesn't seem to want to cooperate. ifconfig gives nothing and I can't figure out why. From googling I've read that a network card has a unique ID on it (I'm assuming their talking about the MAC address) and is used in some config files which is why swapping hard drives gives two different MAC addresses and confuses the system. If that is so would anyone know exactly what config files the mac address is stored/used in? That way I can make a backup of those files and swap those out if I ever need to swap out the hard drives.

I am currently thinking about moving my debian install onto another more powerful motherboard/processor/ram amount. My question is how difficult will the move be?
I have done some reading on cloning and or moving. It seems like moving is the best bet,

It looks like its as simple as moving the harddrive. But what about multiple hardrives with LVM set up? I also realize I will probably have to find the network drivers for the new motherboard. There's probably other drivers that will need to be installed as well. What would need to be configured in terms of VM set up?
The former set up is,
Asus MB with i3 and 8GB of ram 3 hard drives
VLM set up
samba server for the local windows machines
Virtual Box with one VM - Win 7
SNTP server set up to serve the home network.
SSH with keys
VirtualBox PHP
Transmission for torrents
Plex and Subsonic (for remote streaming), other assorted packages
New Set up is,
Intel mobo with i5 and 16 GB of ram

As you are probably aware that WD released new drives ranging from 1TB to 2TB with native support for 4K sector size. And as most of stuff written online is regarding Windows and their support for 4K, my question is has anyone already started to use it under linux?

1.5TB WD15EARS
I'm using Debian Lenny so my questions are: is fdisk automatically recognizes that that drive is 4K drive, or it totally ignores it and partition is as 512byte one? In windows if no 4K support is available it would emulate it and performance would be downgraded. Do I need to enable any specific components in kernel so 4K drive is supported? I wanted to make sure there would be no data loss if I select 4K partition type.

Before I try changing CD drives, re-formatting the hard drive (again), or cleaning the CD drive, I must add that Xubuntu did open. I got rid of all traces of the previous operating system (WinME), and Xubuntu seems to work pretty well. The installation stopped at 41% of copying files. Should I aim for a finished installation or is this fine?

Each time, different methods, I get this about 3/4 of the way through:
The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:
[Errno 5] Input/output error
This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?

I choose the drive to boot to from the computer Bios. When i boot into Windows my clock time changes, about 5 hours.I have another computer with Ubuntu 10.10 installed, but it will not install on this computer, Debian Did. Ubuntu gave me a command to fix this and it worked. However the Debian computer will not accept that command, Which is open a terminal from the menu applications accessories and type gksudo gedit /ect/defaults/rcs in this configuration change the row UTC set it as:UTC=no save and reboot and then set the clock. [It was set to yes]
