Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 No Gui After Installing 2nd Display Pkg And Relog In?
Mar 5, 2010
I'm a comp systems engineering student who's been running ubuntu on one of my machines for about a year and can do basic command line stuff but I'm stumped.I tried to hook a 2nd monitor up and ubuntu said it needed to install a pkg so I let it and then it said to re log in, I did. It now comes up acting like a terminal instead of a gui. I rebooted a bunch of times loading the old system snapshots (pressing esc during boot) and got kernel 2.6.28-15-generic to boot with normally which was great. But the only mouse that worked was the little button one in the middle of the keyboard and there was no sound and a couple of other funny things. Being more used to windows still I figured I'd reboot it from the same kernel and see if that fixed it. Now all of my kernel images act like the 2.6.31-19-generic one and only boot command line.I spent about 6 hours trying every command I could find in the man and help pages and consistently got three errors:1:failed to load apparmor2: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic- ... with about 30 different endings followed byTemporary failure resolving ' *.ubuntu.com'3: RuntimeError: could not open display

I just installed Ubuntu last night parallel to windows vista ultimate (no problems). My biggest problem is that when I tried to install the nvidia display drivers, I somehow downloaded a server based driver (and am having amazingly difficult problems). I use a dual monitor set up (both are plug and play LCD displays) and i'm not too worried about aesthetics but rather, performance. I downloaded the correct driver but now I don't know how to install it. Is there a way to uninstall this server driver?

Just finished wiping and re-installing F12 From a DVD on an Dell Inspiron 9300 with a NV 6800. The NVidia site driver refused to install, so I used the method documented here
[Code]...
as instructed to in the sticky. On rebooting, after the load animation, the screen goes blank/black. If I click around, I can hear some beeps from the OS so I assume that things are running but i just can't see anything.

I have downloaded a command line version of Ubuntu so I can install everything I want almost from scratch. Problem is, when I install an x display manager it wont let me login. It just flashes for a second with a cross, then returns back to the login screen...stuck in a loop."sudo startx" works but not "startx". I have tried lxdm and xdm.

I have reloaded windows xp and now after installing ubuntu latest version, I get a boot menu that gives options. if I select the Ubuntu option, within a few seconds(2)the monitor shows "out of range"! However it is possible to get a command prompt from this menu,(Grub)by pressing "C" then Tab, which lists about 30 commands! But I cannot find what command will overide the ubuntu boot display setting! yet if it is possible in the disc boot F6 menu, then it follows that it must be possible in the hard disk boot menu? (ie nomodeset available on the disk F6, so using F6-nomodeset on the disk allows me to install or run from the disk, which then runs perfectly) Only I cannot make changes in the Ubuntu live that runs direct from the disk, to the installation on the hard drive. My Monitors Max is 75hz 1280x1024, LCD. And although not the latest model, Its still relatively current. Windows from the boot menu works fine.

My computer boots up but just as its about to load debian I lose video output. Where do I start with troubleshooting this?
Also there was an option to install debain as "graphical installation" or just "installation". I chose just "installation", whats the difference? I dont know if that has anything to do with why i cant get output.

I have a laptop that doesn't display correctly since installing F10 x86-64. Instead of using the i810 driver, I see the experimental intel driver. I am running on a Dell D630 laptop with the default intel integrated graphics.
Just to note: Running gnome. I tried KDE and I can actually get this to work and display in 1600x1200. I don't want, "well use kde then" to be the solution. Also, in gnome, if I go to the screen resolution option from the menu, the mirron screens is clicked. Even when I detect monitors and unselect the mirror screens and pick the correct resolution, when I click OK, the screen flickers, and I go back to the same screen with the original default values? Wierd.
I got the bright idea to install system-config-display (something like that), which installed fine. I then changed my default resolution to 800x640 just to try it (really want 1600x1200). Well, I decided to reboot. Not the laptop doesn't start, it stops right after loading anaconda, and just won't go any further.
So two questions:
1. What do I need to change to get the laptop to actually boot?
2. How to get the external monitor to display in 1600x1200.

I'm writing this post from the BT5 Live CD. However, after install and reaching a CLI (on the HDD), when I run startx, my monitor simply displays 'invalid format' (obviously this works fine via the LiveCD)... I've installed Ubuntu and Fedora a few times on a few machines, and have never had any issues with the display... not sure where to start troubleshooting.

I bought a new laptop 2 months ago, with a GeForce GT 335M VGA and win 7 preinstalled. I installed in parallel Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit but face the following problem When I activate nvidia driver from the "hardware drivers" tab ( it gives me only one choice ,to install :version current" driver ), I get after restarting, my screed divided in 4 quadrants with something like a corridor in the middle ,each quadrant showing a tiny ubuntu log screen Only after uninstalling it or booting in graphics fail safe mode I get a normal screen again but then, google earth e.g runs slowly and complains that it works in open gl mode or something like that.
May be its only that the VGA card is new and there is not yet a proper driver for it? Or should I try some changes in some configuration file? I have tried the advices from [URL] but it didnt help . In win7, the card works fine but ....

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with an Nvidia 8200M graphics card. When I try to enable visual effects I am asked to install the Nvidia restricted driver. When I do this and reboot, I get 6 copies of the Ubuntu screen on my display. Does anyone know what is causing this? I'm not sure which version it installed, I assume either 173 or 185. I have downloaded version 190 from the Nvidia web site. Should I install that version? If so, it is a .run file, how do I install it?Also, how do I reinstall the old driver. I fixed the problem this time by reinstalling Ubuntu, but that will get old if I have to do it too often.

I've been installing Debian Stable on a IBM Thinkpad R60 with SXGA display. Running the system works for around 10-30 min, after which period of time there begin screen distortions, which last for always few seconds only. Working can be continued in the time between these distortions.
Running Ubuntu 11.04 for testing has brought up none of these problems. I have enabled "nomodeset" as a kernel parameter, but without success.

I wanted to installed Skype on Mandriva 2009 x64, but qt4 was a pre requisite so I installed it first (from the control panel). I still got an error when trying to install Skype (downloaded rpm), so I tried to reboot. However, now I just get a black screen instead of a login prompt. I have had a lot of issues with X11, but I usually get at least a prompt, I don't even get that now. Just a black screen... If I hit ctrl+alt+F2 I can log in as root, and I tried to start x, but I get a message saying there is a problem with D-sub.

The Dell Touchpad also couldn't start (Code 10). I have reinstalled an older version of the Touchpad driver from Alps and it didn't work. I also tried system restore but that didn't work either.

Using squeeze with a GeForce4 MX 440 video card (NVIDIA) I have a monitor (4/3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 usually), and a TV connected via S-video After installing the NVIDIA driver using the NVIDIA binaries I managed to have a cloned twin screen configuration working.
However, the monitor is (wrongly) detected as having size 1824x768 (aspect ratio is widescreen) Using system monitor, I can set the correct size, but only for one session; besides, the login screen too is messed up the xorg.conf file seems right: proper resolution modes are set; xorg.0.log too

I'm trying to install Atheros AR9485 wireless card driver on debian, and I had no luck.
I followed this [URL] .... to install backports kernel version. The wireless card worked, however, intel display driver displayed the color in the wrong way.
Red pixels are green, and green are yellow. It was displayed like when someone try to connect a PAL system to a TV that supports only NTSC.
This is my lspci output:
Code: Select all00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device 0a0c (rev 09)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Lynx Point-LP USB xHCI HC (rev 04)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Lynx Point-LP HECI #0 (rev 04)
[Code] ....
Is there is a way to compile only AR9485 module from the kernel?
Add the following
Code: Select alli915.i915_enable_fbc=0 to your GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in /etc/default/grub so you would have something like that
Code: Select allGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 nomodeset quiet splash"

I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers with click-install and everything perfect, I have desktop effects working but the problem is that when you open the config. screen settings to make sure everything was really good, I get to screen unknown April.
The maximum resolution is the correct 1440 * 900 for 19 "but the refresh rate by not recognizing the monitor down to 50hz me and gives me the option to 60hz as it was before installing the nvidia drivers.
How can I fix the display settings?

I'm new to Fedora and just installed F10 yesterday. Everything was perfect, no snags at all, until I used the software tool to install the ATI drivers. Now my computer boots but instead of going back to the GUI all I get is a gray screen. I've tried everything I know to get to the command line so I can go back to my old X11 settings but there's no response -just the gray screen.
I'd prefer not to have to reinstall if I could avoid it. Is there a know bug with either a Toshiba Satellite A210 series laptop or the ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card? Since I'm not able to get to the command line, I don't know of a way to diagnose what's failing.

I purchased a lenovo G550 recently and immediately dumped the Windows OS for Ubuntu 9.10. The display is currently defaulting to 1366x768. From reading it looks as though this display can support both 16:9 and 16:10 aspects. I have ran through the xrandr commands attempting to set my resolution to something...anything bigger than 1366x7768 (I'm used to 1600x1200 from my old T61, so this is painfully small). As a test I am trying to get 1920 1200, from my xrandr results it looks like it should be within the lcd's range. xrandr commands failed on me as I have seen on a couple other intel based resolution problems. I don't fully understand the root of the problem and have not had any luck in my searches. So I have also attempted to manually create the xorg.conf file, not luck yet.
Code:
user@Home:~$ sudo ddcprobe
vbe: VESA 3.0 detected.
oem: Intel(r)Cantiga Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS
vendor: Intel Corporation
product: Intel(r)Cantiga Graphics Controller Hardware Version 0.0

I upgraded ubuntu 9.10 from the update manager- it had a couple of problems, and now when I boot there's no display- I'm pretty sure it's just the graphics driver since it loads up and plays the login sound.I'm currently running off a CD version of 9.10 and when I chroot the drive with 10 and sudo apt-get upgrade it says there's some stuff that depend on fglrx, and that it's not there. There were proprietary drivers installed before the upgrade- Is there an easy way to just run with non-proprietary drivers? Or to install non-proprietary drivers to another drive?
(I don't really know what I'm doing, if I need to boot to recovery mode and do stuff could someone please tell me how to do that? The only info I can find is maybe possibly press Esc during the os boot and that doesn't seem to work for me)

I require the use of two apps that appear to have similar problems and am wondering if they stem from the same problem. Both have been installed from .deb files and are not part of the official repos. The first is OpenCPN which, when installed, creates a menu entry. The the initial splash screen displays but after clicking OK, nothing appears at all.The second is Inform 7, which was working fine for a couple of days. Now the Game tab is empty. This is the tab that renders a version of the final game whilst working on it.Without knowing the two apps I realise it is difficult to get an understanding of what is wrong with them but it seems to be my machine that's at fault, not the apps as apparently they run fine on other people's machines. What checks can I do to get to the bottom of these problems?
