However, the monitor is (wrongly) detected as having size 1824x768 (aspect ratio is widescreen) Using system monitor, I can set the correct size, but only for one session; besides, the login screen too is messed up the xorg.conf file seems right: proper resolution modes are set; xorg.0.log too

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having problems installing the graphics driver (from the Nvidia website) for my Nvidia Vanta card on Ubuntu 10.04. I disabled X via terminal and then I ran a Virtual Console. With the virtual console I ran the chmod command and the went through the installation. It did bring up a message with something about my distro not having a pre-configured script (or something like that) and asked me if I would like to continue anyway. I choose Yes and the installation failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a computer with xubuntu 10.10 for my dad. It is mostly working, but flash animations/games run somewhat poorly. I think I might be able to fix this by using the non-free nvidia drivers, but I cannot seem to get them installed.
Sysinfo reports that the video card is an nvidia geforce mx200, so I downloaded the nvidia 96 driver package from the repositories, ran the configuration program, & rebooted. As you may guess, x did not load.
I have been working on this intermittently for a few weeks, & I do not remember everything I might have tried to fix it, but here is what I am sure of:
Sysinfo reports that the video card is an nvidia geforce mx200
when i try "sudo modprobe nvidia," I get the message "FATAL: Module nvidia not found." "sudo modprobe nvidia-96" gives no such error.
When I check the Xorg.0.log, I find:

I tried to install drivers for my GeForce GT 630M graphic card. At first, I just installed nvidia-detect and there was a suggestion to install nvidia-driver:

Very new to linux, just downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and installed it, dual boot, no problems with initial installation.
Trying to install graphics card driver for:

I selected the recommended driver and clicked activate. Download started then failed with error message:

Tried several times now and the download doesn't even seem to start any more.
My Internet connection is 3 mobile broadband, which may have something to do with it, bit it seems to be working well at the moment.
Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

Using the regular driver (whichever that is) the picture displays flawlessly, but when I'm using the NVIDIA driver it displays really weird. URL...As you can see the top and the right of the picture is missing, and there is a large black bar to the left of it.Since it only does this with the NVIDIA driver I guess the driver is at fault here. The graphics card is a 8400GS and I'm running Xubuntu 10.10. The HDTV has a native resolution of 1366x768, and I've connected to it using HDMI.
I have tried messing around with overscan compensation in nvidia-settings, but it didn't help much.What can I do to fix this?
I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

This morning, I authorized an update as almost every day. I saw that the nvidia driver was on the list but in recent years, I no longer fear these driver updates since everything usually works well...
Except that this time, no! I turn on my pc this afternoon and more 3d effects. I run "Nvidia X Server Settings" which tells me I do not use the nvidia driver and must run as root the command "nvidia-xconfig," what I do. I restart X and no display at all, only the prompt in text mode!
I have just upgraded to Fedora 13, and am trying to use the experimental Nvidia driver to enable Compiz desktop effects. The driver appears to be working correctly, but when I enable desktop effects, my text/icons/option menus are inverted (mirrored on both x and y axis's). Can anyone help me solve this issue? am i going to have to go to the proprietary Nvidia graphics driver?

When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
I got out my old Fuji Finepix s3100 and set it to web cam mode to see if anything had changed in the world of usb video drivers. Lo and behold it worked! I can watch myself on cheese web cam booth. kewl, but I wanted more. So, just recently hearing about chatroulette on the Daily Show, I click and wahla no go . After flash comes up and asks for and receives user permission to access my hardware, I click to find a random stranger, and my camera displays yellow and blue lines across its onscreen display box. I notice that movement is noticed by the camera. If I move I notice a change in background/lines. As far as I can tell, my camera is not a fault. I mean it works for local viewing. Is this a flash or possibly a chatroulette problem?

I would prefer to be able to use the rpmfusion nvidia driver instead of the closed driver but when I try it, KDE4 runs fine for a while but then the whole display starts blinking and the cpu % goes to 99% for XMy PC is Fedora 12 x86_64, the video card is a XFX 8800GT[URL]1) installed the kmod-nvidia-190.53-1.fc12.1.x86_64 and dependencies2) blocked nouveau with rdblacklist=nouveau in grub.conf, 3) Ran: setsebool -P allow_execstack on4) fixed the xorg.conf (I had to move my old xorg.conf out of the way and merged my DontZap option back in)
5) rebootedI did not yum remove the nouveau driver,.... didn't seem necessary.My desktop will run for a while but inevitably starts flashing uncontrollably. I can't even ssh to it to run init 3 to kill X (I can ssh to it but for some reason I can't su to root to kill X).

Is there anyway to boot in safe mode. I boot Fedora with GRUB2 and there isnt any failsafe entry for it. I have blacklisted nv driver already.
I just installed Ubuntu last night parallel to windows vista ultimate (no problems). My biggest problem is that when I tried to install the nvidia display drivers, I somehow downloaded a server based driver (and am having amazingly difficult problems). I use a dual monitor set up (both are plug and play LCD displays) and i'm not too worried about aesthetics but rather, performance. I downloaded the correct driver but now I don't know how to install it. Is there a way to uninstall this server driver?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had a look and can't find this particular problem on the boards (feel free to correct me if there is something useful already though). I've recently got a Sony HDTV, and have hooked it up via HDMI to an Nvidia GeForce graphics card. Surprisingly enough, I'd like to watch movies/TV this way. However I'm experiencing flickery horizontal white lines on the desktop, and horizontal lines through video. I generally use VLC to play stuff, and have the 805 Nvidia proprietary driver installed.
So far I've tried:
Changing the resolution and refresh rate (Including the native TV ones)
Using Twinview, Separate X Screen and unplugging my monitor altogether.
Uninstalling the Nvidia Drivers and using the standard ones
Re-Installing the Nvidia Drivers
Xine Player
Changing video output of VLC to X11
Using Force scaling (I think, it's a tv-specific setting to compensate for differences in native resolution)
Switching desktop effects on and off
In short, it doesn't seem to be an issue with drivers, resolution, refresh rate, video files, codecs or players. How to stop these flickery lines as I wouldn't like to have to give up on the OS over one problem.
I have a HP Compaq nx9010 laptop with 1 gig of memory and 128mb being dedicated to video memory. The graphics chip is ATI Radeon IGP 345M.
I can only set my resolution to 1024 X768. If I try to change it to any other size or try to play any games, the video has millions of jerky horizontal lines going through it. If I hookup an external monitor the video works just fine. Being new to linux and even newer to installing on it laptops, can anyone tell me what if any thing can be done to correct this. I am running Ubuntu 10.4 LTS.
Currently using Nvidia driver version 195.36.31, it's the version that works with Nvidia-kernel-dkms, would updating Nvidia driver to the current 275.09.07 driver version break my setup?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop with an Nvidia 8200M graphics card. When I try to enable visual effects I am asked to install the Nvidia restricted driver. When I do this and reboot, I get 6 copies of the Ubuntu screen on my display. Does anyone know what is causing this? I'm not sure which version it installed, I assume either 173 or 185. I have downloaded version 190 from the Nvidia web site. Should I install that version? If so, it is a .run file, how do I install it?Also, how do I reinstall the old driver. I fixed the problem this time by reinstalling Ubuntu, but that will get old if I have to do it too often.

I went back to Suse 11.2, it comes with the 'nv' driver for my NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (64 MB) and I'm getting some slow performance on browser display and sometimes video playing. Not always, I recently saw a 2 hr long movie on Blue Ray resolution, so the problem is not hardware, it's software. I saw several links here on how to install other drivers and a 1-click install link on this page but my question is, since this is an old card... which driver is the best for this card ?

I have install it using nomodeset and after entering the system I installed nvidia from System> Administration> Additional drivers. Driver version was current 260.19.06. After installation I was able to see the boot screen but was unable to see the logon screen. The computer froze with the background color of bootscreen which is purple. And I have to restart it and have to choose failsafe graphic mode. And after logging in in failsafe graphic mode. My NVidia driver says I am not using it. How to use nvidia driver properly. I have tried many Tutorials present on internet but none of them works.

The driver has got a .run extension and i don't know how to handle that, I've tried to extract like i did with .tar files but didn't work. I clicked the file while in X window and it opens a terminal and runs for a sec and said i have to exit X window and run as root. so i exit X window and login form CUI, navigate to the folder and type "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.08-pkg1.run" but nothing happens, so i add sudo and tried but All i get is "NVIDIA command not found". I guess this is not a problem but i just don't know how to handle the .run file. please help. I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx LTS. I' ve checked other threads and found some issues regarding Nvidia drivers but i wanna know how to handle the .run files.I've windows xp, 7, Puppy Linux and Lucid Lynx on my desktop and whenever i repair windows the GRUB got damaged.
