View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to version 2.6.31-20-generic, my desktop computer with an ATi HD4850 graphics card, using the fglrx driver, now won't boot to X. It goes through the boot process and displays the splash screen, but after that there is nothing on the screen. Choosing an older kernel version from GRUB doesn't make a difference. I don't even know how to diagnose the problem properly. I can boot into recovery mode and get to the command line, however, starting x from there only leaves me with a blank screen.
so the source of the problem is that I had installed the catalyst driver from amd.com, which needs to be reinstalled with every kernel update. I didn't know this in advance, so now I'd like a way to revert back to fglrx from the repos. Sadly, the community docs only seem to cover the graphical way of doing this, which is kind of useless to me at the moment. The ATi driver docs gave me a way to uninstall the catalyst driver using only the command line. So now I've booted back into Ubuntu and selected to install the fglrx driver from System → Hardware Drivers. However, now when I boot up, I get the message: "(EE) Unable to initialize PCS database
I am running a dual boot system. I have XP on one HD and Ubuntu 10.04 on the other. No problems. I boot back and forth all the time. Then came along Natty. Now I tried to boot over, and I get "Cannot display this video mode". I have it set up that when I restart, if im away from the computer, Ubuntu starts by default. So it eventually starts in ubuntu. But the screen where I used to be able to choose which operating system to boot into is now replaced with "Cannot display this video mode".
I am not wireless, and nothing has changed as far as hard wear. The monitor is some old Dell that worked perfectly fine with 10.04. I tried changing my resolution and settings to every different one, and restart, and still no dice.
To sum it up, after my update to Natty, when I reboot, my OS selection screen is no longer visible. Its now replaced by "Cannot display this video mode".
So now it seems, what ever setting this screen is running on, XP dont like it..... because of Natty?
I gotta get some work done in XP, so right now im screwed. My CRT is currently sitting outside in the rain. Or I would try it.
Just wondering is there a way to make the update manager display automatically in Ubuntu 10.10 after it check the repositories for updates. I keep having to manually put sudo apt-get upgrade all the time. Even set to daily it never pops up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a big issue that i can understand (and i didn't find any answers) When i boot, i only have the fullscreen console (tty1 to tty6), which ask me to login. If a try a gedit it says that there is no display. Startx doesn't work neither.
Before this, i tried to update from 10.04 to 10.10, but I had some issues with the update manager. On looked on google for solutions and I tried a couple of those: I updated my source list with maverick ppa, I removed the nvida driver
I performed the online update which included a kernel upgrade. After restart I no longer get a working display. Otherwise appears to boot, as I can see the drive from my laptop via samba. I cannot get a display in either normal boot nor in failsafe. I am also not able to get a terminal screen.Grub boot includes VGA=0x31aAre there any other boot options I can enter to at least get to a terminal?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis morning, I authorized an update as almost every day. I saw that the nvidia driver was on the list but in recent years, I no longer fear these driver updates since everything usually works well...
Except that this time, no! I turn on my pc this afternoon and more 3d effects. I run "Nvidia X Server Settings" which tells me I do not use the nvidia driver and must run as root the command "nvidia-xconfig," what I do. I restart X and no display at all, only the prompt in text mode!
Linux downloaded new updates and worked perfectly. Next time I started mint, just before the login screen appears display says No Signal and goes in sleep mode. I think that mint downloaded somekind of display driver update wich is not compatible with my driver card. I can't see desktop, I just hear the login sound and that's all. What should I do? I'm new with linux.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSince doing the update which included kernel "2.6.32.16-141 fc12-i686 PAE" I can no longer boot into my usual 1280x960 desktop. I can set it using NVidia settings but even though this offers to modify xorg.conf it fails to do so. I have tried running as root and it doesn't then give an error message but when I look at xorg. conf there is no section.showing any specific screen size. It worked ok before the update. In case it is relevant the video card is a Quadro FX1400 with KDE. Also the whole program seems rather unstable since the update.

I used the zypper dup tool to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and my display is now broken into columns and partially obscured. I can barely see anything on it. When I ran zypper it stopped about half way and locked up.I then ran it again to completion. At boot, GRUB gives me my startup options as before and is clearly readable with good resolution. When I select openSuse to start it, the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then comes back with the screen problems.
The problem continues all the way into KDE. I have approximately four columns displayed but I can barely see anything. Most of the lower half of what should be displayed is obscured so I cannot load any applications. If I right click, I can make out the dialog box and select the run command. From there I reran the zypper command using the 'zypper up rpm' option and it says "nothing to do" and the "highest update version is already installed."
The display problem also exists if I use the failsafe boot option. I remember having to download nVidia driver last year to get a better resolution, but 11.2 (64 bit) worked great until the repositories stopped working and I no longer was able to load software. Now I can't use the computer to download and burn a DVD version of 11.4. Again, I do seem to be able to use the terminal, so I could presumably fix something with it if I had the right commands and I do seem to have access to the repositories.
I am trying to update using Update Manager and I get this message: Failed to fetch "Failed to fetch [URL]..404 Not Found" My system is 64 days out of date now.
I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

View 7 Replies View RelatedI started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit installed. Update manager tells me there are updates available, but when i try to install them, downloading the updates fail and throws this error:
Code:
Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eglibc/libc6-i386_2.10.1-0ubuntu16_amd64.deb
Consequently, a similar error occurs when I try installing Sun Java 6 Runtime.
Code:
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/s/sun-java6/sun-java6-jre_6-15-1_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
Ubuntu Restricted Extras stalls when it's time to download the Java package I tried synaptic, update manager, aptitude, apt-get, and they all throw similar errors. Then I also tried connecting to different servers, to no avail. So to check if it's my connection to the net that has problems somehow, I tried downloading the file directly through my web browser, and it works. (But it's not recommended, and it won't let me!, install the updates manually, right?) I tried searching for the errors on the net and in the forums, and they're all somehow related to proxy servers. I then checked if I'm using some inappropriate proxy settings, and everywhere it's all set up to connect to the net directly, which is, well, my setup.
Take note though, that I am able to install other softwares normally, i.e, using synaptic, apt-get etc. The ones I tried include Pidgin and Mplayer. It's just these updates and Java:

When i do update from Terminal, i dont get all updates which are in Update manager. Why?
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... Why do I have different results ? Is something missing in my "sources.list" file ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedNormally Update Manager always finds the update to the next version of Ubuntu. It still hasn't given me any notion whatoever. I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.
