I just fresh installed openSuse 11.3. Am trying to install Hupervisor and Tools but during the install I get the message that xen itself can't be installed while it needs 20MB space.My boot partition is already maxed. At least that is what the partitioner is telling me that 70MB is the maximum setting.
View 2 Repliesere's my issue I've got an 80GB SATA drive and a 320GB IDE drive, I've already installed Windows 7 on the SATA drive. 80 is too small (in my opinion) to dual boot openSuse and Windows 7. Can someone explain me how to use a partition from the 320 IDE to install openSuse, and how to setup grub so I wouldn't have any problems booting to Windows?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.
Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

OpenSUSE11.2 x86_64
KDE 4.3.5
Linux 2.6.31.14-0.1-desktop

1. Leave only 1 kernel
2. tune2fs -r 0 /dev/xxx
3. remove /boot/efi and splash.xpm.gz
"preupgrade now requires at least 167MB" means more space could be needed, and I'm unclear if the above is sufficient.

1. Boot from a small live CD like partedmagic and delete Linux partition.
2. Free space into NTFS with the same small live CD.
3. Remove GRUB by booting from supergrub disk and choosing the option to remove GRUB.
I don't have my Windows Installation CD with me, so can I remove Linux Mint just by following these steps?
I was running openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell Studio with a mirrored disk. The upgrade to 11.3 went well it seemed until it got to the point of installing the new bootloader. Then it couldn't mount /boot. Otherwise it seemed to go OK though.It completed and rebooted. I see a very brief flash of the word GRUB on the reboot, but then the screen blanks and I get the BIOS messages again.How can I now install GRUB so that I can boot. I had a similar issue with 11.2 in the past, and was able to repair GRUB using 11.2's DVD's "Repair Installation" which had tools to reinstall GRUB.11.3's DVD is missing this option.I'd prefer not to do a fresh install as then I will have a lot of OS setup to repeat (Samba, Apache, Trac, etc.....)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to install Linux Mint 11 (just came out) to a USB drive. My USB drive is 34 gb. So I want to put a 1-2 gb partition on it and install mint just to that. Is that possible? I am a noob so I want to use [URL] but the screenshots don't show an option for a partition or state any extra steps that might be involved in doing this (there's a tutorial for doing this for one of the Ubuntus using fdisk, but I don't have any linux installs right now).

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.4, trying to install to an iSCSI partition. I'm using gPXE to boot to my iSCSI volume. This works fine, and pulls up grub with my boot options. I think boot the openSUSE 11.4 entry, which kicks off the boot process. I see the steps for running DHCP on the interface, but when it gets to iscsiadm, there's an error logging in to the iSCSI target portal along the lines of "15 - already exists. After that things start to fall apart - I/O errors, mainly, and the system completely fails to boot. What's going on and what this already exists message means?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am attempting a Network installation of openSuse 11.3 on an old desktop which has IBM Boot Manager so that I can boot to one of three OSs, openSuse being the third. Sadly the installation of openSuse fails before the CD initial boot has finished. Looking at the text log of the starting process the problem appears to be a driver and the last line of text where it stalls refers to eata driver.
There are 4 hard drives in the machine, configured as two RAID 1 arrays driven by a DPT 2144W hardware raid card. (Very old but very good). If I Google eata I get a good deal on SCSI raid and DPT cards but I am out of my depth when they say a kernel module is needed.
Another concern is that the RAID arrays are configured using a bootable DOS configuration disk and once this is done they are recognized by other OSs such as eCS and OS/2. The arrays are just treated as single drives so these OS installations do not interfere with the card configuration. I am concerned because I cannot afford to lose the data on the drives but it appears the linux driver might want to rebuild the arrays.
I am building a 10.04.1LTS server. I am putting the /root filesystem into a Software RAID1 partition. I want to keeo my /boot partition outside of RAID.Is there a way to have a boot partition on both sda and sdb so if one drive fails the second boot partition will work away - or should this be kept in with RAID also.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB hard disk and divided to 3 partitions, 1 for windows, 1 for openSUSE and 1 for Ubuntu. i have installed and reinstalled linux on my laptop for many many times but it is like this, Grub 2 is installed to MBR and it workded fine but i want to add openSUSE and chose not to boot from MBR when installing it.i had to edit the menu.lst and got it to boot to Ubuntu partition. i also share file on partitions directly by booting to openSUSE and take data from Ubuntu and Windows partitions. so sometimes the pc boot i cannot scrool down the grub menu entry and it boot directly to openSUSE. BUT it returns to the start point ( i can see Dell booting, my laptop is Dell Inspiron N5010). and so i decided to reinstall Ubuntu(kubuntu) and set grub to install to its own partition not MBR.
Now i cannot boot to either openSUSE or Ubuntu. Only Windows is available by chance. new problems arise now that i cannot even boot the bootable CD. Did i loose the MBR or sth?
I've just recently decided to try Linux, but I want to keep Windows 7 on my computer as well. This is also the first time messing with things like partitions. Could anyone lead me to a good site where I can figure out how to partition my hd, dualboot openSUSE, and fix any problems that may occur?
View 9 Replies View RelatedP4 2.4gHZ 2.0GB Ram I have tried to do some reading on this by googling and such, but it is all a bit overwhelming and so many posts/articles want to deal with dual booting which I am not planning to do on this machine. I am trying to find some info on whether it is better to have a separate boot partition. As in, separate from root partition. I have read that a separate boot partition makes for a quicker start and better recovery if system crashes. I will shortly be installing openSuse 11.2(KDE) [currently on 11.0] and I want to optimise the partition scheme so that it is the most efficient. I have a 160GB HDD that will be housing this new installation, so space is not a problem. I am only user on this machine. Currently, it is just partitioned as such:
2.0GB - swap [because I read it should equal Ram]
32.0GB - /
40.0GB - /home
76.8GB - extra storage [Not really necessary as I have 2 other HDD on system 1 - 320GB and 1 - 200GB]
Also, is it recommended to have separate partitions for /tmp /var or any other /nnn ?
what's the difference (if any) between choosing to boot from the MBR, the root partition or enabling neither? Referring to: pic23-MBR switch.png - Windows Live Would one be better for dual boots for example? (Using Vista too)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux. I tried and failed. I need some help on Creating patitions (I think it is root, swap and home).I have HP laptop with WIndows 7 installed. I have shrink the volume to allow Linux installation. I have three partitions, first one is windows boot - about 100MB. Second one is about 110GB and it has windows 7. Third one is UNALLOCATED space of 110GB that I intended for Suse.
Now I am going to install the Suse. The unallocated spaces should be "primary" or "extended"? Also, should I divided this new partition in to three partition? If does, what are sizes for each? I want to learn Linux so I will able to look for better job. This is the first time I ever look into linux and confused.
A while back I ran into the situation of running out of space on /boot. When I last installed Suse I just went with the recommended LVM layout, which proposes a very small /boot partition. When you run out of space you are now faced with resizing the LVM, which Gparted unfortunately does not support.In Googling around I did not find a concise guide, so I collected the information I needed and and then wrote a guide on the steps I used to resolve this issue and it is available at Resizing Default LVM Partitions and Moving /boot - Mine the Harvest
I found using EVMS from a live CD to be quite simple and was able to create a new /boot partition and reconfigure grub to use it in very short order. I was quite impressed with how easy to use EVMS was and the options it provides. (I think that the default LVM layout the Suse installer proposes is overly conservative on the size of the /boot partition. Why not allocate a few hundred megs, especially considering the size of drives today? Perhaps Suse will soon move to using grub2 and eliminating /boot altogether, but for now the very small allocation of space can be a bit of a pitfall for users -- especially when they are not familiar with resizing LVMs and reconfiguring grub. Of course moving to grub2 also introduces its own complexities too.)
I was dual booting windows 7 with opensuse 11.3 and then realized I wasn't ever using Opensuse. I then deleted the partition it was in and now I cannot boot into windows. Grub immediately takes over upon booting but doesn't detect any partitions. I tried booting from an opensuse cd and changing the boot order priority, but grub still comes up. I don't have a windows 7 installation disc

Desired setup: entire system except /boot partition on hard disk, /boot partition on USB (pendrive). Aim -- making impossible to boot from hard disk, forcing boot from the USB (please, don't question my aim, I am just trivializing the issue here to shorten the description).
Setup: I set /home and / partitions on hard disk (/sda), /boot partition on USB (/sdb), I selected the options to Boot From Boot Partition as well as Boot From Master Boot Record. Finally I selected Boot Loader Options and selected Set active flag in Partition Table for Boot Partition. I installed the system.
What works:
a) without pendrive inserted I cannot start the system
b) with pendrive inserted GRUB menu shows up and system is ready to boot
The problem: after initial starting, there is long pause, and system switches to text mode with error:

drive "/dev/disk/by-id/id_of_my_pendrive" is not found Since the console worked, I logged in, and yes, actually there was not such disk found. But the disk (pendrive) was there -- the initial booting took place not from void, but from it. So why it is not present? Out of curiosity, I pulled it out, and plugged it in back, now it was visible in "dev/disk/. Question: what should I change/tweak for correct booting the system from pendrive? Or is a bug in 11.4 installer? I would like to setup everything as it should be done -- I mean within installer.
What I found so far: Booting encrypted system from USB stick - Gentoo Linux Wiki it is similar problem to mine, but only similar. I have other symptoms.
Ive been running crunchbang on my system, and yesterday decided to try opensuse so i can install the novell client. I ran the live gnome cd and during installation I shrank my main partition down and created a new partition for opensuse. Installation went well other than sometimes programs close and make the part of my desktop that they occupied useless.
Question 1) I can see my crunch bang files through opensuse but i cannot find or boot into crunch bang.
question 2) Why are these programs closing and then killing my desktop? Say i have a Firefox in the top left of my desktop and it errors and closes. I go open Firefox again, anywhere that the old Firefox window was in ( not click able). My cursor will turn to the text cursor as soon as it enters the x y position. I have to restart the laptop to be able to click file or insert a web address.
I mistakenly removed my /home of openSUSE while trying to install another distro. My root pertition is OK. openSUSE is shown in grub. but i cannot boot into it as there is no /home is there any way to fix this without removing my openSUSE?

I have setup my opensuse 11.3 machine w/ LVM support for everything but boot. I have the following disks:
/dev/sda1 - 70.57 MB /boot
/dev/sda2 - 5.81 GB back up for original windows
/dev/sda3 - 292.21 GB LVM group.
When I attempt to resize the 70.57 MB partition, it tells me that 70.57 mb is the max that this partition can be. This was true even during the install
Just did a clean install of 11.3. After first try, system couldn't boot for hard drive. When installing a second time, I noticed that booting from a boot partition and the MBR are disabled by default. I enabled both and proceeded with the install. System now boots fine. Since the automatic partitioning created a boot partition, I'm assuming that that is where the system is booting from and I didn't need to enable booting from MBR, but am not 100% sure. So make sure to at least enable booting from a boot partition
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently, I had to switch harddrives on one of my servers due to the need for hardware.
However, when I switched back to the original harddrive I got a surprise : Instead of booting normally in OpenSuse 11.3, it booted in the grub shell.
I did a root ( hd0,1) but when I attempted the setup cmd it failed. Thinking that I probably was a configuration error ( nothing was changed - the drive had spent some time in a nice anti static bag ) I booted using a USB key.
To my surprise I got a message stating that parted couldn't read the other partitions ( boot and swap ) and hence I would not be able to edit then. Fortunately, the data partition seemed OK so I can backup the data.
Preferbly, I would like to be able to restore my original system.
I've created a /tmp partition on a server that I would like to encrypt in a fashion that doesn't require a password to be entered on boot because this server is in a remote data center. Storing the password on the server so that it can automatically boot would obviously defeat the purpose of encrypting in the first place. Skipping automounting is another option but I'd really like to avoid that because there are a number of other services that would have to be suspended until the /tmp partition is online.
I found this article designed for centos (HowTos/EncryptTmpSwapHome - CentOS Wiki) which seems perfect since it generates a key randomly on boot and that key is destroyed and regenerated on each successive boot. However, the script doesn't seem to work on openSUSE - it throws errors saying . /etc/init.d/functions doesn't exist, restorecon command not found, action command not found, etc. Is there an openSUSE-ish way to achieve promptless partition encryption?
