Fedora :: Driver HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT20F ATA Fails Locate Disk After Asking For Install?
Nov 4, 2009
New Toshiba satellite model L505D-S5983 used for Fedora 11 install. Install dvd and computer responds with what do you want to do...I enter "install"begins uery.. English-->US---then "unable to locate driver"/select driver...."What driver do I need to select or obtain?
As I have no blank cds handy right now, I had to go the way descirbed here:URL...But when I seect my partition and / (no sub dirs, an empty ext3 formated 6.8GB partition, exclusivly for that usage) it tells me there ws no installation media found and the search path got automagically adjusted to /imges/image.img.And ideas howto fix that? Or how to install fedora from harddisk (without big fuss)?
Have burned a DVD of 11.4 64bit and am trying to install alongside Windows 7. The boot from the disk starts, I get a SUSE splash screen and initial menu. I check install source (F4) is set to CDROM. When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.
had 9.04 install on a dual proc home built system that was running fine until a recent update wiped out grub. Since I have all my data backed up, I decided just to install 10.04. I select Use Entire Disk but when Ubuntu tries to install, I get this error:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA nvidia_dacaecb (mirror) failed.
I've been struggling with suspend to disk (hibernate if you prefer) for a while, it works after a fresh boot and for several days' worth of overnight hibernation as I go about my work, but eventually it stops working - it gets to the splash screen but the bar only makes it a little way to the left before stopping, and then after a timeout the system just returns to the "session locked" screen - no real error messages.
I've done my best to try to find out what's causing it to break but I'm really struggling, the suspend process doesn't appear to write anything helpful to the dmesg log or the /var/log/pm-suspend.log - the only thing that I've seen at about the right point in time is cifsd, but I can't be sure that it's a problem with cifs as hibernate continues to work immediately after mounting windows shares with cifs.
i downloaded Ubuntu server from here, choosing 32-bit:[URL].. i burned the image to a CD. i booted it, and tried to install it. i went through a bunch of screens before it started to install. after a while i got an error message that reads: "Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100816.2)' in the drive /cdrom/ and press enter."
i don't understand this message. when i downloaded Server there was no message to save a second file for a second CD.
Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message error: out of disk grub rescue>
I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem?

I have just installed openSUSE 11.1 64 bit on my system. Subsequently registered to get an auto-update repo and auto-updated until no more updates were offered. Then I first tried YaST to install NVidia drivers from the NVidia repo (added their repo), but sax2 wouldn't recognize them. So I downloaded their 190. (beta) drivers, installed the kernel source code and gcc 4.3. Then I switched to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), closed the x server, ran the driver install as described (gcc 4.3 is installed). Installer said that all is fine (I checked the log to be sure). So I ran sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia, but the driver still isn't recognized.
I am attempting a Network installation of openSuse 11.3 on an old desktop which has IBM Boot Manager so that I can boot to one of three OSs, openSuse being the third. Sadly the installation of openSuse fails before the CD initial boot has finished. Looking at the text log of the starting process the problem appears to be a driver and the last line of text where it stalls refers to eata driver.
There are 4 hard drives in the machine, configured as two RAID 1 arrays driven by a DPT 2144W hardware raid card. (Very old but very good). If I Google eata I get a good deal on SCSI raid and DPT cards but I am out of my depth when they say a kernel module is needed.
Another concern is that the RAID arrays are configured using a bootable DOS configuration disk and once this is done they are recognized by other OSs such as eCS and OS/2. The arrays are just treated as single drives so these OS installations do not interfere with the card configuration. I am concerned because I cannot afford to lose the data on the drives but it appears the linux driver might want to rebuild the arrays.

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook A3130, and I have semi-recently installed Fedora 11. I am still a fairly new linux user, and would like to continue to use this great open source software, but it seems my DVD drive fails to play DVD's. The specs are here, but unfortunately they don't give much detail as to the model number of the drive in question. I insert the disk, and it pops up with the following dialogue:
You have just inserted a Video DVD. Choose what application to launch. Select how to open "disk name" and weather to perform this action in the future for other media of type "video DVD". It then suggests opening the disk in "Movie Player", and provides a check box for "Always perform this action". I hit OK, and it seems to try to open Movie Player, but then comes up with this error:
An error occurred Could not read from resource. Then it provides an "OK" button. When I click the button it goes back to Movie Player, and proceeds to not show any video.
I just tried to open the disk inside of Movie Player, via the "Movie" menu, then clicking "play disk 'disk name'", but once again I get an error: Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disk. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media. And again it provides an OK button, which diverts back to the main Movie Player window.
I had fedora 12 working nicely and tried to add Compiz. That has caused my laptop to hang with the cursor blinking. I can get to the virtual windows with Ctl-Alt-Fx keys. However I am not sure what to fix.I had run Dmesg and it is complaining that it can not locate the Nvidia driver. I believe it mentions Nvidia.ko but will need to verify that.My thought was that if I just did an "upgrade" maybe that wold restore the GUI and I could go forward from that. I am trying to get awaay from the MS world.
I had no problems up to the newest kernel version. But for 2.6.40-4 akmods fails to build the kmod with the following error:

Trying to install 10.04 to an existing Win7 (64) system that uses a RocketRaid 2340 controller. Windows installs just fine; reads the external driver file every time. Linux never has installed on this machine.

I'm new to CnetOS5, I'm so new that I still adore the GUI process:)... I try to install the following NIC
"Realtek RTL8139 FamilyPCI Fast Ethernet NIC" on windows Vista control pane I told u that I'm still migrating from windows :)
Any way, my simple problem is that when I installed NIC it doesn't work although the kernel identifies the manufacturer, that is when I write "/sbin/lspci | grep -i ethernet " the output is " 02:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Hangzhou Silan Microelectronics Co., Ltd. Unknown device 2031 (rev01) "
I own a web server (centos 64bit with cpanel on it) and my datacenter add me a second hard disk and i want first to locate from ssh where is it (the path) and then to copy my mysql folder /var/lib/mysql to the new disk and have it like this /new/mysql on the second disk.
I've patched my kernel to enable my IDE-mode SATA drivers (ata_piix.c), and everything works fine. But when I attempt to create a Driver Update Disk with this structure, it doesn't work (though the same format works for SLES11):
I know there are many threads about recovering damaged superblocks. I've spent 3 evenings reading them and trying what they suggest. Invariably the commands do nothing except to report bad or missing superblocks. I've removed the physical disk from the machine and am working with a dd image file (/mnt/image). I can mount what used to be hdc1 and read its files with no problem. I'm trying to recover partions hdc6 and hdc7.$ mmls /mnt/image -b

I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....
I known the Driver Disk can be loaded by anaconda when specifying the 'dd=xx' parameter. But how should I do if I still want to use these drivers which are included in the Driver Disk in an up running Operating System?
I have not a real environment to test it, but looks like the driver modules in the Driver Disk won't be installed into the real installed system. Am I right? Are there some tools which can load Driver Disk in a up running Operating System?
I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?
i have been away from linux for a long while and decided to try it out again. i just received a fedora 10 dvd and went to install it.it wouldn't boot on either my laptop or pc?so i explored the disk and realised its a source disk?
1 = is the dvd disk any good to me? 2 = how can i install fedora from the disk or do i need to get another disk?
I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?
I am attempting to install Fedora 12 on an HP Pavillion 8766C (Pentium 3 900 mhz with 512 MB ram). I have tried installing from 4 different i386 DVD .iso and 2 Live CD .iso that I burned and the install hangs on each of the discs. I either get a "Anaconda 12.46 Install Exited Abnormally" from the Live CD's or "Boot has failed, sleep forever" from the DVD's. I have also tried the Fedora 12 respin DVD and Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD with similar results. I am about to give on the whole thing at this point! The only success I have had is with the Gparted Live CD.
