As I have no blank cds handy right now, I had to go the way descirbed here:URL...But when I seect my partition and / (no sub dirs, an empty ext3 formated 6.8GB partition, exclusivly for that usage) it tells me there ws no installation media found and the search path got automagically adjusted to /imges/image.img.And ideas howto fix that? Or how to install fedora from harddisk (without big fuss)?

The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.
I downloaded Fedora-13-i686-Live-KDE.iso. Is there any way to install it from hard disk?

Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes it may be necessary, or just convenient, to install Fedora from the DVD ISO file located on a local hard drive. The method I describe here does that, with two requirements. It uses GRUB4DOS, and the necessary files must be located on a FAT32 or EXT2/3/4 partition. Create the new partition and name it "FEDORA". It does not need to be a primary partition, and can be deleted later. An existing partition can also be used, but you will either need to change it's name as shown or put the correct name in the kernel line of the menu.lst file when that is created in step 5.
Use your favorite ISO program to open or mount the the DVD ISO image file and extract the /images directory to the root of the partition. Copy the DVD ISO image file to the root directory of the partition. Prepare a method to boot GRUB4DOS. See the following GRUB4DOS tutorial page for details about that task. [URL] Create a menu.lst file for GRUB4DOS with the following lines and place it in the appropriate location for your installation of GRUB4DOS.

For the GRUB4DOS direct-mapping to work, the ISO file cannot be fragmented. If the partition is fresh (newly created), that shouldn't be a problem. However, using an existing partition will likely fragment the file, and you'll need to defragment it with a Windows utility (FAT32) first. I've actually only done this on FAT32, but EXT should work too, theoretically... Translation - use FAT32 on a new partition.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting Ubuntu installed on my desktop, I'm trying to get a dual boot going with Windows 7.
The Windows 7 install was fine and the OS is working with no problems at all. But when I try and install Ubuntu, the installer can't see any hard disks on the system. The first screen is OK where it checks for available disk space, but on the following screen there are no disks listed.
I can boot into the Live CD with no problems, and I can see the disk and create partitions with GParted, but when I go back into the install it can't see them. fdisk -l can see them as well code...
I tried using the all_generic_ide option as well because I saw that in another post but it didn't help. I'm not really sure where to go from here, I've looked in the BIOS and there's very few options relating to the HDD, and none of them seem relevant. There's no RAID configuration or anything weird like that.
The machine is an AMD 64 with a Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI motherboard. The HDD is a 250GB SATA2. The disk seems fine, and I've verified the install DVD as well, it seems to be OK (I tried both the 32 and 64 bit installers).

I have installed fedora 14 xfce.
However, I want to totally format the hard disk so I have no operating systems left on there.
I have created a usb boot disk for installing windows.
So I want to re-format the whole hard disk. Then boot up with the usb and install windows. Once I have done that. Then use the rest of the hard disk to install Fedora 14 from my other usb.
However, I am not sure how to completely format the hard disk. I want to start from a clean disk.
Can I install fedora 14 and Cent OS5.4 on i3. ? I have fedora 14 and Cent OS 5.4 install on core 2 duo. Can I insert the same hard disk to i3 pc, will the previous os will boot ? or will I have to format and load the fresh one ?

After I installed Ubuntu 11.04 the disk had been wiped and a version of Ubuntu installed on it.I had forgotten to disconnect the external disk's usb cable before running the install in case something like this happened.I then just took whatever the installer said regarding partitions: I trusted it;and the installer's manual partition manager is a little too technical to be user-friendly. Mostly, I just trusted the automated partition manager to be making the right decisions for me.
The installer's auto-partition manager said it was erasing two partitions. I thought, oh that must include some sort of swap drive then.The auto-partition manager said it was using 500Gb of space. I thought, well there's more HD space on my desktop than I thought.I recently acquired the machine. The installer completely wiped my external usb backup drive. Not only that, but it installed another instance of Ubuntu on it. The install routine actually installed two instances of Ubuntu 11.04: one on my local HD and one on my now erased external HD.Just to rub salt in the wound, the update manager only updates the version that's running: the version on my internal HD. The version the installer copied over my backup data is redundant.I have fortunately a second backup of most essential data. But the external HD contained data that was not copied elsewhere. It has been permanently erased. It will probably possible to retrieve this data from original sources at a considerable inconvenience. I do not know at this time whether and how much of the data that was erased is now lost forever and what the consequences of the loss would mean.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a ssd cosair harddisk with both usb and sata connecters. If I connect it with sata anything is working fine, and I managed to install Fedora core 13.
But I also want to be able to use the harddisk when it is connected with usb and that causes problems.
When I boot the Fedora Core 13 dvd It can't detect my usb harddisk.
When booting in install mode it just don't detect the harddisk.
When booting the dvd in rescue mode it don't detect the harddisk, and it don't create any entries in /dev/ for the harddisk. It is like there is no disk at all.
I have tested this on 3 different computers, so it is not a problem with my specific motherboard. So either it is a problem between my harddisk and Fedora Core 13, or there is some problems with the usb drivers in the boot image used by the Fedora core 13 dvd.
The disk is working fine if I connect it via usb to an existing Windows install, so the usb connection is working.
I installed Fedora core 13 with the harddisk connected to sata and then re-connected the harddisk to usb. It then boot up, but complain about missing root filesystem. Most likely caused by missing usb driver in my kernel.
But anyway, what I really want is the ability to boot from both sata and usb, so I can take the harddisk with me and boot it on other computers with usb.
So is there a command which allows me to build an kernel image which can boot from usb or am I trying to do something which is not really supported?
I did update my fstab to use LABEL=myroot
There is 1 Windows partition(NTFS) and 1 linux partition on the disk. (No seperate /boot partition and no swap)

After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?
I would like to install Fedora 11 on an ASUS P5L-VM 1394 motherboard with a 3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. This is an LGA775 socket mobo with a Intel 945G chipset. Two SATA hard drives are plugged into SATA ports. An IDE DVD drive is plugged into the IDE/ATA port. Using the 32 bit Fedora 11 installation disk, I have seen two cases:
1) No hard drive recognized. When i get to the disk configuration screen, there are no options to choose from.
2) By monkeying around with the BIOS settings or switching the SATA ports the disks are connected to, I can get an alternative mode in which no drivers are found for the DVD drive either.
Currently, a version of Ubuntu is installed. UPDATE: The board was purchased in a P3-PH4C barebones, which for unknown reasons requires a different BIOS issue than the regular P5L-VM 1394. Updating to the most recent BIOS does not resolve the problem. One the installation procedure fails to recognize the hard drives, going into a shell and examining the boot up log shows that the kernel recognized both hard drives. So it's down to why the installation procedure is not recognizing them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am a novice in Linux but due to my academic requirement I had to install Linux (Fedora 8). I have 2 hard disk's (80GB & 20GB), on the first HD which is 80GB I have Windows XP and the other one I partitioned and installed Linux. Now the first problem is that, whenever I start my PC I get a error which says "GRUB hard disk error", however when I restart the machine it's fine and gives me the boot options.
Secondly, the HD containing windows was affected by virus so I had to format & reinstall XP. Strangely after that I am not getting any boot options and it's like windows is the only 1 OS running. But on windows the partition on which Linux is installed in intact. So I assume something is deleted maybe the Linux boot file.
I cannot install F11/12 into Sata hard disk with AMD SB700 neither full installation image or live image in USB drive. It cannot find the hard disk in my machine. But all the things are working fine with F10 installation. Does anyone have the same issue
