Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Freeze After Couple Of Minutes

Aug 26, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a AMD processor with a nvidia graphic card in dual boot with windows xp. First the live-cd was already freezing after a couple of minutes so I had to install Ubuntu with the alternate cd. Now it freezes whatever I do after 2 or 3 minutes. I had exactly the same problem with the 6.04 version but I had only to remove powernowd from /etc/init.d/ to make it perfectly working. But unfortunately this file seems not to be there in this version.

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Freeze After 10 Minutes In 10.10?

Oct 14, 2010

I am a Ubuntu user since a few years (Breezy Badger was my first) now but I still don't know much about computers or commands so please bear with me. I used 10.04 on my HP pavillion PC of two years old without any problems. Now I upgraded to 10.10 with update manager. And it boots fine, but whatever I do, after aprox. 10 minutes everything just freezes. And I don't remember the magic phrase for soft reset, so I hit the power button.

I have searched the forums and could not find a satisfactory answer to my problem. I found this thread [URL] but have no idea how to do what's requested. Could anyone please tell me what to do?I know how to open a terminal, and type a command or two but that's basically it.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Shutdowns After Idle For A Couple Of Minutes?

Oct 12, 2010

I've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing.

Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my servers (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online!

I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell 1545 - Wireless Connection Drops After A Couple Of Minutes?

Apr 10, 2010

I have a Dell 1545 laptop with ubuntu 9.1 32-bit installed (the 64-bit had a bug with the wireless drivers which is why I have not used it). Initially, the laptop worked well with the wireless (a sky router with WPA security) but now, the wireless signal drops after a couple of minutes of usage. I have to reboot the laptop or sometimes reboot the router as well to regain the wireless signal. I am using the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver.

I have an older dell inspiron 6400 as well with the same OS and driver and it works perfectly without any problems for hours / days.

Fedora :: X Freezes After Boot - Unresponsive Shortly Before Or After Login For A Couple Of Minutes

Apr 15, 2010

So my Dell latitude E6400 running fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE) is usually connected to a big screen (1920x1200).

Now each time I boot, X becomes unresponsive shortly before or after login for a couple of minutes, and then goes back to normal. This happens both with and without connection to the big screen.

The error messages associated to this seem to be like this, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is cluttered with them :

Code:

I normally start my computer in the morning, walk off for some tea, and come back when X is functioning, but when I'm in a hurry it's pretty, or very, annoying ... drinking tea / coffee to wait for a computer to start is something people did in the 90s, it shouldn't be default behaviour in 2010 ...

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - With Streaming Media - Video Or Firefox Itself Seems To Freeze Up Every 10 Minutes

Mar 25, 2010

Linux and ubuntu. second my computer is single os with ubuntu 9.10. the problem i have is trying to watch any thing streaming media. Movies, music, like from ....., divx, or even megavideo which seems to work best right now.

What happens is that the video or firefox it self seems to freeze up every 10 minutes or so.

It may be that i need to increase the buffer memory size but i do not know how to.

I have updated my computer and firefox and installed and updated any possible add-ons that would fix the problem.

What im asking for is either a patch or add-on that will help this problem or how to run windows inside of ubuntu. (Im am tired of windows and ubunu has made my computer work so much faster, when i am sure that i know how to make this computer stable with what i need for internet use i will apply it to my other computer.)

General :: Ssh Sessions In Xterms Freeze For Many Minutes Whenever They Disconnect?

Jun 2, 2010

If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so.
There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.

Ubuntu :: Installed Kubuntu With Wubi For Windows 7 On My Hp Pavilion Dv6 - System Continued To Freeze After Some Minutes Due To Overheating ?

Jul 22, 2011

today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85 C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90 and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).

General :: `mencoder` Captures 10 Minutes Of Audio In Less Than 10 Minutes?

Mar 15, 2011

I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.

I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

$ time mencoder -really-quiet -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:audiorate=32000:alsa:adevice=hw.1:input=0:amode=1:normid=11 -endpos 00:10:00 -ovc copy -oac pcm -of rawaudio -o test-32000.wav tv://69
real 9m54.886s
user 0m5.536s
sys 0m1.740s
$ ls -l test-32000.wav
-rw-r--r--@ 1 martin martin 76800000 Mar 15 17:20 test-32000.wav

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?

Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:

CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec

Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10, Takes 30-45 Minutes For Installation/Live Environment To Load. Install Slow?

Apr 27, 2011

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.

After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers. When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading. The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

General specs are:Intel Core i7 i7-720QM / 1.6 GHz 8GB DDR3 1333mhz ram2x 500gb hd'sBlu-ray/dvd/cd driveFull specs are at: the laptop is a g73jh-a1http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/asus...-33950895.htmlI'm downloading the iso again and i'm going to try and burn it to a cd-r at the slowest possible speed, I'm mainly curious if it could be fualt of the disc i burned or if it has something to do with my computer.

On installing Ubuntu 10.04 it showing the same problem as that before.(freezing few minutes after the login page) and again dual booted with Windows XP.

i don't suspect a hard ware problem because my Windows XP works perfectly fine with the Same hard ware.

Hard ware specifications

3 Ghz Processor

PS:its the 8th time i have installed Ubuntu ..so its really frustrating .

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Process Taking About 5 Minutes

I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time using a USB drive and everything went fine during installation. However now during the boot phase I see 10 or so lines of
[14.24024] ata5: COMRESET failed (error=-16)
The numbers prior to COMRESET change with each line but the rest remains the same. I am extremely new to Ubuntu or Linux for that matter as this boot process is also taking about 3-4 or even 5minutes as it slowly cycles through each error. Once 10 or so lines have popped up the computer finishes starting and I can log in fine and everything.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Amd64 Installation Freeze?

May 31, 2011

I have recently added a couple of HDDs to my system and wanted to try 11.04 on one, so installed on my smallest empty hard drive. The installation went fine, but upon booting to that drive the system froze at the 'Verifying DMI pool data' screen, and didn't boot. I thought it could have been that drive, so I tried installing on my 500gb drive which had 10.10 running on it. After backing up files etc., I tried a fresh install of 11.04 on this drive, but with the same result, same freeze at the same screen.

During this process I noticed that the Live USB I am using has been quite glitchy (eg. selecting a menu option and it hangs for about a minute before any action), which makes me suspect that it could be the image I'm using. I've downloaded it a couple of times just in case it was a bad image (has happened to me before), but that hasn't fixed it. Both times I used the image in the Internode mirror repository, [URL]...

Fedora Installation :: Eth0 Loses Connection After About 2 Minutes

Mar 1, 2009

I am setting up a fresh Fedora 10 install on an older computer for a roommate and have one odd little problem, everything else appears to be working just fine.

The network connection drops after about 2 minutes (somewhere between 90-120 seconds). This only happens in the installed Fedora 10; it does not happen at all when I boot a Kubuntu LiveCD.

Here's what I know:

The machine is a Dell Dimenision 4500, 2.0 GHz, 512Mb ram.

The ethernet card is 21x4x DEC-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet.

Unplugging the ethernet cord and plugging it back in allows the network interface to come back up, grabs the right IP, but only holds it for another two minutes.

ifconfig and route show all the right info while the connection is good, but inet disappears once it goes down.

'ifdown eth0' and 'ifup eth0' do not bring it back up.

Is this a driver issue perhaps?

I started the upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS last night and it seems to have frozen during the "Installing the upgrades" portion. My mouse works and so do my Application menus, etc. Just the upgrade process has frozen.

In the upgrade window, there is a drop down box showing the terminal. Below is the last install it shows and at what point it froze:

Setting up dbus (1.2.16-2ubuntu4)...
Installing new version of config file /etc/dbus-1/session.conf...
Installing new version of config file /etc/dbus-1/system.conf...
The system user 'messagebus' already exists. Exiting.

What should I do now? I left it overnight and nothing has changed. Should I reboot?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dualboot: Freeze After Grub

Feb 8, 2010

I just tried a dual installation. Win7 sits on my internal HDD, Ubuntu has a partition on my external HDD. The external Hdd is set up to have ~900GB of NTFS file storage and ~100GB for / (ext4) and a seperate swap partition. I partitioned it that way from the livecd installer. I have to say that I'm basically fresh out of ideas. I can boot Ubuntu 9.10 64bit just fine from a Usb stick. Installation also worked fine, I had the installer install Grub on the external Hdd. I am quite sure that it actually *is* on the external hdd, since unplugging it as well as changing the boot order to internal hdd first results in a straight boot to Win7.

Anyways, booting from the external device, I get as far as the grub OS selection prompt. Windows 7s loader can be started without any problem from here. However, choosing Ubuntu (recovery or not) results in... nothing. The system plain simply freezes up (I gave it some time) and can only be reactivated by resetting it. So far, I tried manually editing the boot entry by pressing "e". I changed the root entry from 2,2 to 2,0 to 2,1 to 2,3 and 2,5. Afterwards I tried booting by pressing ctrl+x. The result always stays the same. No boot, frozen system. Pc: C2D E6750, Gf8800GT,4GB Ram. Pastebin of grub.cfg: [URL]
