I have installed Fedora 12 on a brand new pc, quad core, 4 GB RAM. Within 1-2 minutes after I log in, the computer stops responding. I can move the mouse and click on, but it is too slow, and the cursor drags.
Running Top shows that Xorg takes 80% of the CPU.
i had previously installed Ubuntu 9.10 (dual booting with Windows XP) whichgave me errors of "Hard Disk Bad Sectors" and then would freeze my PC leaving me with no other option than Re-Booting..[ignoring the error as a BUG) so on advice of other ubuntu users.i tried Ubuntu10.04.
On installing Ubuntu 10.04 it showing the same problem as that before.(freezing few minutes after the login page) and again dual booted with Windows XP.
i don't suspect a hard ware problem because my Windows XP works perfectly fine with the Same hard ware.

I am having this problem with F 10. First I get the infamous message: Could not detect stabilization, waiting 10 seconds. at the beginning of the booting process. then after I initiate startx, I use gnome, all works fine and only for few minutes and the system freezes. At first the mouse freezes, then after 30 seconds or so, the mouse's cursor can move but clicks are ineffective, not even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, or Ctrl+Alt+Del. I have to do hard reset.

A hard reboot is done and the same thing happens after logging in. The system use to work fine up until a few weeks ago. I suspect it may be an yum update.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my Dell latitude E6400 running fedora 12 (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE) is usually connected to a big screen (1920x1200).
Now each time I boot, X becomes unresponsive shortly before or after login for a couple of minutes, and then goes back to normal. This happens both with and without connection to the big screen.
The error messages associated to this seem to be like this, my /var/log/Xorg.0.log is cluttered with them :

I normally start my computer in the morning, walk off for some tea, and come back when X is functioning, but when I'm in a hurry it's pretty, or very, annoying ... drinking tea / coffee to wait for a computer to start is something people did in the 90s, it shouldn't be default behaviour in 2010 ...
I have a troubling issue. I log into Linux Mint 9 (fully up-to-date) on my Samsung Q320 laptop with power connected and after a few minutes it seems like the entire X session dies, I am logged out, all processes are killed and I am presented with the normal GDM login screen. When I first installed Linux Mint, this never happened. I have the NVidia closed-source driver installed and when the system logs me out, it immediately restarts X loading the NVidia driver which flashes the logo on screen. This all happens instantaneously, so it is not a reboot of the machine, just a restart of the display manager it seems.
There does not seem to be any cause for this. I have disabled all screen saver and power management settings that may lead my system to auto-logout of Gnome. The system log doesn't indicate anything unusual happening. Confused about where to to take it from here bar and fresh install of the OS. Perhaps there are some X11 logs I should be checking.
Update: Moved to Ubuntu 10.10 and its recommended NVidia driver and have not experienced this problem since.
I have just installed ubuntu on my second laptop. However, this one is giving me some grief. After several minutes, it completely locks up. No mouse, keyboard, anything. Just frozen solid. I had some issues installing it, and got around them by checking something like "nolacpi" and "noacpi" with the live cd, but now I don't know how to re enable those options. I'm quite computer savvy, but am still learning how linux works. For refrence, this is the system specs:

I am on ubuntu 11.04 and have had it since 10.10. For some reason when I am working on something whether it be on internet or listening to music after about 45 minutes of working ubuntu completely freezes and I cant do anything. Can someone please help me I really love ubuntu I just dont no any code so I tried researching the subject but dont understand the lingo and code.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen my wife tries to login to her computer, Gnome usually freezes. Nothing in Gnome responds to the mouse or keyboard and all I can do is go to a console and restart gdm. I can always log into Gnome under my username. I am not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. Presumably it is something in the startup apps or a config file. The quick and dirty method would be to create another user and move her data but this would be a lot of work and the problem might come back.
I have a suspicion that it is related to gnome-keyring. This is because (against my advice) she insisted on an automatic login without entering a password. This was a waste of time as gnome-keyring promptly complained and demanded a password. Many times I changed her settings to ask for a login password but it does not always change the behaviour. When it tries to log in automatically without a password Gnome locks up around the time that gnome-keyring asks for its password. The default language for her is Portuguese and mine is English if that makes any difference.
I've been unable to resolve this problem for the past weeks and have come as far as I can trying to fix it on my own. I have a fresh install of 11.04 on a Shuttle ST20G5 with a Radeon Xpress 200g chipset. After 5-10 minutes of usage in X, it freezes solid (no response to alt-sysreq) and displays a white screen (sometimes with a pattern). I believe it's a kernel issue.
Things I've tried but still resulted in crashes:
- Switching to VESA graphics
- Running failsafe / Recovery Console X
- Downgrading X server to 2.09
- Running latest X server via ppa (at least, I think I did this. Maybe I didn't)
- Upgrading kernel to 2.6.39-0 via ppa
- Running the live cd
I get no warnings or errors of note in xsession-errors or kern.log
I have not been able to catch the error or obtain any troubleshooting info. When it crashes, it just crashes.
my trackball mouse just freezes for no apparent reason about every 15 minutes

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 15 over a previous F14 installation. (My /home and /usr/local directories were installed as separate partitions, and the system dual-boots with Windows on another partition.) Setting up the users seemed to work normally. However, when I logged in, instead of starting normally, it went back to the login screen.I rebooted and made it go into terminal mode on startup (appending 3 to the kernel arguments). I was able to log in from the terminal. When I tried using startx, it failed. I tried to use "yum update" but I had no internet connection, so it did not work.
The next step was to try and get a connection to my router using iwconfig and wpa_supplicant, but that also failed. I tried reinstalling Fedora from the LiveCD, but the problem persisted.
I am setting up a fresh Fedora 10 install on an older computer for a roommate and have one odd little problem, everything else appears to be working just fine.
The network connection drops after about 2 minutes (somewhere between 90-120 seconds). This only happens in the installed Fedora 10; it does not happen at all when I boot a Kubuntu LiveCD.
Here's what I know:
The machine is a Dell Dimenision 4500, 2.0 GHz, 512Mb ram.
The ethernet card is 21x4x DEC-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet.
Unplugging the ethernet cord and plugging it back in allows the network interface to come back up, grabs the right IP, but only holds it for another two minutes.
ifconfig and route show all the right info while the connection is good, but inet disappears once it goes down.
'ifdown eth0' and 'ifup eth0' do not bring it back up.
Is this a driver issue perhaps?
I recently installed fedora 12. After installing I added software using the software manager.
Since shutting down when I log in I don't get any menu. It just shows the wall paper. I then tried to log in under other and for the username I put root but it wouldn't recognize the password.
I'm trying to perform an install of F14 (fresh install over F13), and it has been showing "running post-installation scripts" for 1 1/2 hours now. I am wondering if this is unusual and what the implications might be of power-cycling and rebooting. I'd note this is a fairly fast machine with 2 quad-core Xeons (I forget their model number).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Dell Vostro laptop with Core2 processor 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I want to install Fedora. I tried to install it with Fedora_14_ 32 bit and Fedora_14_ 64 bit. After booting by DVD or USB, I get initial blue screen in which I select Install and it starts for few seconds and freezes there, it does not move ahead. I got Fedora 32 bit DVD from Fedora so it should have come with checksum checked. So IMO DVD is ok, it is something else with regard to hardware detection, stopping installation to go ahead. I tried 3 times, but do not go ahead.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.
I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?
Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:
CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec
Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?
Every now and again Fedora 11 just freezes. At first I thought it was Firefox but a couple of times I just had a text document open.
I have two boxes on one KVM switch and "tap-tap" the scroll lock key to switch between computers. Sometimes when switched back to Fedora box it is frozen. Nothing works and I must push the power button to get it to reboot.
What causes Fedora to freeze and is there something I can do about it?
As I mentioned before, I has having freezes while installing F12 (x86_64) with a GeForce 8600 GT. I was able to complete the installation by doing it with the "basic" video driver. However, I was still getting frequent freezes. I installed the testing Nvidia drivers, and the freezes went away. When it froze, it was a hard freeze -- it wouldn't respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL or SysRq (I did enable SysRq first). I had to do a hard reset.

Whenever I try to install from my F10 DVD, I get to the part where it asks if I want English or some other language. After I pick English and click Next, everything goes black except for my mouse which is frozen.
Specs:
Primary boot drive is blank, secondary has Win7
Using F10 x86_64 DVD
e6850
8800GTX
6GB RAM
Multiple install problems.
1. Installation freezes while looking for repositories. Have left overnight hoping installation would continue with no luck.
2. When it does find all the repositories it crashes with fatal error installing package XYZ. This could indicate errors when reading the installation media. Installation cannot continue.
Solutions tried.
1. First I though the download ISO was bad. Tested the ISO download with sha256sum checksum utility. Perfect download according to the checksum.
2. I tried 3 different DVD drives on system that Fedora is being installed to in hopes that maybe the DVD drive was bad.
3. I tried burning the ISO with two different DVD burners. One with windows 7 ISO burning utility. The other on windows XP using Nero 7.
4. Tried burning the disks at low speed to get a better burned disk.
5. I have tried 2 different brands of DVD disks
6. I have officially gone through 8 different DVD disks.
We are having a cluster with couple of disk servers, compute nodes and a head node. Disk server is nfs mounted on all the compute and head nodes.
The problem is that if any of the disk servers hangs, it freezes rest of the cluster too which is dangerous. Ideally, cluster should not care about the hanged server and run without any problem except files from that server is not visible.
Is there any way I could avoid the problem of freezing cluster because of one hanged server?
I installed Fedora 10 on my HP Pavilion zv6130us and when the battery goes low, everything freezes over, just like that... At first I didn't know why it happened, but later I realized that it happens when it's not connected and the battery is low.

Next step was kmod for nvidia but when i rebooted i couldn't use fedora anymore cause loading freezes at some point. same thing happens to my desktop pc, where i solved the problem booting with an older kernel (this time i have an error saying "eth0 link not ready" or something like that). Everytime i try to boot with a more recent kernel loading freezes. The point is...i can go through with my desktop pc by choosing another kernel, but i can't even boot with my laptop.

Installing from a CD, and F13 constantly freezes at the same spot - "Checking dependencies in packages selected for installation" - gets stuck 1/3 to 1/2 thru.
Dell Dimension 2400, Celeron 2.4GHz, 768MB memory, 120GB drive.
I've used same CD set to install several other systems so CDs are good.
