Ubuntu :: 9.10 - With Streaming Media - Video Or Firefox Itself Seems To Freeze Up Every 10 Minutes

Linux and ubuntu. second my computer is single os with ubuntu 9.10. the problem i have is trying to watch any thing streaming media. Movies, music, like from ....., divx, or even megavideo which seems to work best right now.
What happens is that the video or firefox it self seems to freeze up every 10 minutes or so.
It may be that i need to increase the buffer memory size but i do not know how to.
I have updated my computer and firefox and installed and updated any possible add-ons that would fix the problem.
What im asking for is either a patch or add-on that will help this problem or how to run windows inside of ubuntu. (Im am tired of windows and ubunu has made my computer work so much faster, when i am sure that i know how to make this computer stable with what i need for internet use i will apply it to my other computer.)
I was just wondering if there is a software package that will allow my linux server to process video files (mainly AVI and MKV) so that they can be streamed over the network or Internet. I obviously wouldn't be able to stream files between 600MB and 8GB over the Internet and have it play smoothly. What my plan is to setup something so that I can stream my videos over the Internet when I am not home. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Or maybe there's a software that can break the video file into "parts" and only send out blocks at specific intervals?
on almost every website i've tried with streaming media the media will not play. i don't know if this is something to do with the proxy server i have to use or a lack of plug-ins on firefox or something else entirely. i have firefox set with an 'automatic proxy configuration url' i've tried manual as well.
I am using ubuntu 8.04 with GNOME. I copied a video from cache folder of firefox.It is actually video from ...... I was wondering can I stream it to firefox to watch it once again instead of running it in media player ? If I try to drag that file into firefox it brings up window

running ubuntu 8.04 dual boot with windows- need windows for avery label program, ibm via voice and access data base .chose 8.04 because of long term support. firefox is now unstable and does not do streaming video ' audio.[ustream in particular and others] usually i get the video but not the audio. sometimes the fox just closes and i can open it on the second try- sometimes not. skype does work. there may be a fix for the audio using libflash support program. where to get this& what to do with it is a problem.
perhaps it would be prudent to upgrade to 10.04 but this seems to be a work in progress and might lead me into further problems. on the other hand i could work up to ubuntu 9.10 if it would be more likely to work better the get to 10.04 when it is further along. i am pretty useless with the command line.on the whole ubuntu has worked well until this problem came up.
I recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I was wondering if this can be done, or if these features have yet, if ever, to be implemented.
I successfully installed darwin streaming server .. I stream Audio through internet well but videos I can stream locally in my network only .. when I am connected to internet outside my network .. it doesn't stream I think their must be ports opened for that .. or any 1 have any ideas .. the audio is streamed on port 8000 .. video is streamed on port 7070 but locally only .. I opened those 2 ports in my router only the audio is working .. also I opened ports 554,7170 disabled the firewall of the router .. is it a problem of ports or something else .
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a AMD processor with a nvidia graphic card in dual boot with windows xp. First the live-cd was already freezing after a couple of minutes so I had to install Ubuntu with the alternate cd. Now it freezes whatever I do after 2 or 3 minutes. I had exactly the same problem with the 6.04 version but I had only to remove powernowd from /etc/init.d/ to make it perfectly working. But unfortunately this file seems not to be there in this version.
I am a Ubuntu user since a few years (Breezy Badger was my first) now but I still don't know much about computers or commands so please bear with me. I used 10.04 on my HP pavillion PC of two years old without any problems. Now I upgraded to 10.10 with update manager. And it boots fine, but whatever I do, after aprox. 10 minutes everything just freezes. And I don't remember the magic phrase for soft reset, so I hit the power button.

If I ssh to a remote machine and then lose internet connectivity, the session freezes. I can't control-c or otherwise abort and go back to my local xterm or terminal prompt but if I wait several minutes it will do so. There must be some way to force it to abort the remote ssh session when connectivity is lost. I'm on a Mac but I believe this happens on cygwin or linux as well.
I'm dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu Maverick on both a laptop and a desktop, of course using Ubuntu for as much as I can. Now, I've also got a new Sony Bravia TV that is connected to my home network. I've found it so incredibly easy to stream media from my computers to the TV under Win7 and it really bites me because I want it to be like that in Ubuntu too. It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue. After some searching around, I found a guide on setting up ffmpeg at [url] which I have followed. I am still getting the error.
Do I need to add any other codecs to make this work?
Just installed fedora 10. While using xp i used to stream my videos from windows media player to my ps3 is this possible using fedora or do i need different software.

I have managed to download the relevant M Player, but when I click on the streaming audio link it pulls up the player, then nothing happens. It says "stopped" and when I click on the play icon nothing happens.
When I cut and paste the relevant link into M Player directly it looks as it it will work, it seems to buffer for about a second, then nothing happens again.
I have installed "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" and the "Medibuntu" repo is enabled. If this remains a codec issue (which it feels like) how do I find what codec I'm missing?
today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85� C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60�C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90� and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).
I've tried on a couple of mailing lists to get a decent response, but it's been pretty shabby, so I thought I'd try the expertise of this fine community.I have a, relatively, ancient iMac G4 "Flowerpot" running Debian Testing and XFCE that I was using as a home music server. I write "was" because I could simply mount it using SSHFS from work, but now they have decided to become very restrictive with ports and for the life of me I can't get it working. I've already set-up GNUMP3D on it, but that also uses a port work won't allow.
So, in essence, I'm looking for suggestions on a Web-based application I could use to stream my music from home. Flash does not work on PPC, so anything Adobe-related is out of the question. Also, Java seems "iffy" at best... It's also worth note all of my music is in OGG format, so the program would have to be able to play said format.

I recently moved (~65mi). I have all my files on my Linux Server at home. I want to find a way to have 2 Ubuntu Workstations (at my office/apartment) and Laptop to all be able to stream my media from my home server. (The server get about 600kbps upstream).
Accessing the files I found OpenVPN and NFS to work great - however streaming my videos hasn't been so good - its extremely choppy and unwatchable. I realize there is no perfect solution, but is there anything that could be setup to buffer/prefetch/compress videos making them tolerable to watch?

Using NFS I have shared my videos from the desktop and have it automounted at start up on the netbook. I can navigate to the files but once I click play, the netbook locks up.
Is this a limitation on my hardware or is there a better way to "stream" these vids?
I don't know why, but I can't seem to just play video files (stream them) directly through the internet using MPC or any other media player. It is a bit weird, because I think I was able to just a month ago. I have made some changes to the general setup of the apache server, but nothing major, and I have no chance of reversing it all.
Instead, when I try opening the url using "Open file" it doesn't just open it an begin playing from the internet, but instead appears to be frozen. However, If I let it be "frozen" long enough, it will eventually play the file, indicating that it has downloaded the entire file to a temp location on the hard drive.
Is it something with the permissions? Actually, I went and made everything in /var/www/ 777, as it is not known by a domain name or registered anywhere. I am just connecting though my IP address as the server is located locally. Even this didn't help.

I would like to stream my HD Movie collection over a wireless network to my PS3 and/or Xbox 360.
All my movie files are MP4s and I wondering if it is possible to do this. If possible, I'd like to use the VLC player to do this but its not too important. I really really really do not want to sacrifice any video or sound quality while streaming.
My local priest has asked me if I can use my computer skills to stream church services live for people who can't make it to church.I said, sure thing! I thought it would be simple, but the deeper I look into it, the more lost I have become!Here's the tech requirements:
- A camera with good optical zoom and focused on the altar (the camera will be stationed at an unobtrusive point at the back of the church on the choir balcony) - Everything must be wireless (power is available on choir balcony to power the camera). - Sound should be synchronised perfectly with the video (have access to the church PA system - located behind altar) - the internet connection should be able to upload the stream to a virtual server (i.e. with root access) that's accessible to the web with ease. What upload speed would I need? Would 256k be enough? HD video is not required - ..... quality would be great. We can upgrade to HD at a later point in time! - What bandwidth requirement would my server need if say 1000 users were connected? Seeing as they would most likely be locals, would just one stream be sent to the local exchange and that exchange would send out the stream to the 1,000 users, or would each user have to have a dedicated connection to the server? - Say I bought a camcorder with HDMI output, what kind of processing power would I need to convert this to compressed video? (I've got an old Pentium 4 and an AMD64 2.0GHz lying idle in my bedroom and it would be great to make use of 'em instead of chucking 'em on the skip) - I'd like all this to be done so that HTML5 browsers can access the video, resorting to flash if necessary - I'd also like to be able to power down all the hardware with ease: i.e. set a timer. I'm sure ubuntu can do this with ease? What about configuring the camera to zoom in every time it is powered on? Can linux control the zoom on a camcorder? - Am I totally nuts?
I've got a NAS mounted on a linux machine, and here at another location, I have my Ubuntu laptop. I'm able to remotely, securely mount the directory my NAS is mounted on in the linux machine onto my laptop via sshfs, giving me remote access to my NAS via my laptop.The problem I'm having is.. even though I have a high downstream at the laptop end, and a hefty 1mb upstream at my home, I still can't quite stream the movies I have stored on it. I can stream them, but there is a lot of stuttering.I've tried messing around w/ various options w/ mplayer, but I can only improve it slightly at best. Am I missing something? Is it a size issue that it comes down to? The files are roughly 700mb for a 1 1/2 - 2 hr avi file.
When I play streaming video on hulu or other sites it is choppy. However, the sound is fine. Video files play fine when I download them.I experience this problem in both Firefox and Chrome. I have a 10MB connection on other Linux desktops the streaming video is fine.I imagine it is a flash issue, but I have the latest flash v10.1.The other solution would be a video downloader for streaming video. I have not found one that works on Linux.
I am elevating this thread up a level from [url] . Ubuntu 9.10 no longer streams without the screen pausing and going black every 2 minutes! Our product was just going into production and now we need to hopefully find a version of Ubuntu that streams video! We couldn't go with Unbuntu 10.04 because the video streaming was 30% slower than 9.10.
This is the only thing stopping me from totally coming to Ubuntu rather than dual booting with Windows 7....sharing my Videos and Music to the XBOX 360.... i love it so if i can get this resolved i would be a very happy Linux user.
