Ubuntu :: Cannot Install New Browsers - Other Apps Running?

Feb 16, 2011

After downloading a Chrome (for Linux of course) installation package via FireFox. Opening it from Downloads, entering the Administrator password. Then clicking on the " Install Package " button in the " Package Installer " window, I get a message:
"Only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time, please close the other application 'synaptic', 'aptitude', or 'update manager' first."
I see no evidence of these apps or any others running & I got rid of the Firefox. Are these " Other Apps " hidden somewhere, how do I determine this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Let Non-root Users Install Apps?

Apr 7, 2011

I'm going to set up an Ubuntu computer for my family. They asked for it, I didn't push them. But I know that they don't like passwords.

So my plan is to make an admin account which is in the sudoers group and then make induvidual accounts for the users. But I also want them to be able to install apps.

So I wonder if it is possible to set the computer so that they can use the software center. What is the best method to do this? The apps mustn't be installed system-wide.

Ubuntu :: Programing Errors When Trying To Install / Remove Apps

Aug 10, 2011

I was messing around trying to be able to download minecraft to my computer (it's very confusing for Linux, and I know nothing about this system!) Now when I try to install apps in the Software Center I get this error:
There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks.

I've seen a solution that seemed to work for someone else but when I go into the Terminal and type in the commands it asks for my sudo password and I have no idea what that means/is because I never set any kind of password like that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update New Install With Apps From A Dying Drive?

Dec 17, 2010

I had an old laptop (POS) with Lucid installed. I was updating to Maverick via Update manager. Well, I had a feeling my HDD was failing but it finally bit the dust on me, and the laptop never booted up properly after the update... I then put together a new laptop with a new drive, I can connect my old drive via USB to the new Lappy, and pull any essential data over to the new system, my question is. How do I import the list of apps I used to run into the new lappy, to have Aptitude or apt pull down and reload everything I "was" using? I figure there is a simple way, just not sure how to do it from a non-running distro via usb connection..

Ubuntu :: Install A Minimal Gnome Setup Without Any Of The Usually Installed Apps

May 25, 2011

I'm trying to install a minimal Gnome setup without any of the usually installed apps. Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -y full upgrade
sudo aptitude -y install xorg gdm gnome-core plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo ubuntu-artwork jockey-gtk network-manager synaptic

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?

Can I then install the famouse oracle database server and java and eclipse once like it was a harddrive?

Apparently I have to use the "JauntePE Make Portable Apps" to modify existing applications. Is there an easier way?

Are there alternatives to pendrive linux? Do you like them?

OpenSUSE :: Zypper Error While Attempting To Install Apps

Jan 5, 2011

OpenSUSE 11.3
Zypper 1.4.8-0.2.4 (i586)

When attempting to run commands of zypper:

Code:
$ sudo zypper install <XXX>
$ sudo zypper help
$ sudo zypper services

[Code]....

I looked through my command history to verify I hadn't done anything stupid. The only thing I had done since my last zypper command was to install ngspice....WITH zypper.

Looks to me like libreadline.so.6 is corrupt.

Is there a way I can "update" or reinstall libreadline.so.6 with an uncorrupted version without bricking my OS? I looked into uninstalling libreadline.so.6 from Yast Software Manager (GUI) but it throws all kinds of warnings about how it can't complete operations and it will break links and such....so I'd like to avoid it unless a guru says otherwise.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Recently Used Apps Area Empty After Reboot

Not earth-shattering, I don't suppose, but have noticed that since installing 11.3 (Fresh install, x64, DVD), the "Recently Used" list in the "Start(? Kicker??)" Menu, doesn't save applications through a reboot... ie, if I start Thunderbird, Open Office, whatever while logged in, these will then appear in the "Recently used" section of the menu, but then do a reboot, and the applications area in the recently used menu, will be empty. The "documents" area is fine, and shows stuff after a reboot, but not "applications"....

Software :: Query On Creating An Installer That Helps Install All Apps

Jul 15, 2009

Just to give you a brief overview of the setup that I have presently. The linux box has a series of softwares installed on it with its respective configurations. The softwares most important are python, php, mysql, mysql connectors to name a few. Everytime we need to setup a machine like this the process has to be repeated several times over and the whole nine yard steps need to carried on frequently. Alternately, we also approach it by taking a complete file system backup ['ghost' of the box, to be precise] of the system recently installed and restore it on the new system to make it less cumbersome.

What I was looking for was something like an installer that helps me to select the packages that I need to install. The packages selected gets installed and resides in the directories that I want it to, configure the default settings or help me to change the configuration during or after the installation and so on and forth. Basically, its also an activity to assist newer recruits who would want to setup such nodes at a faster rate than currently.Am completely new to such a project. I may not have explained myself exhaustively here but am ready to give anyone as much details as reqd if there is somebody out there to assist and show direction.

OpenSUSE Install :: First Install Of OpenSUSE11.3 On External Hardrive Using USB Drive

Oct 19, 2010

I've pretty much installed Ubuntu Linux9.10, 10.04 and Debian 5 on external hard drives before, however, I just want to avoid certain pitfalls that may occur with openSUSE11.3. Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.
