What desktop environment should i install to develop Gnome apps? As i cna see ,the required tools are
Anjuta - 3.0
Devhelp - 3.0
Glade - 3.10
and most of these versions are not available for ubuntu. Tell me what DE to have in order to do that!
I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.

I have a question about switching between desktop environments like kde and gnome. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.x and with a really cool theme I found and mixed. I would like to check kde desktop because I kinda like the appearance of it. I have also cairo dock and compiz configured for my needs. my question is whether I can switch to kde desktop without losing my customized gnome environment if I decide to switch back to gnome? (I know that to switch session you need to log out but that's not the point) the next question is how can I install kde without losing the customized gnome theme I have ?( if the answer for the first question is negative)
the final question is whether I lose data when I switch desktop and if do than what specifically.
Is the new Ubuntu still running with Gnome as the desktop environment? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was something else - does that mean I could uninstall Gnome?

Its a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to use gnome desktop environment and connect to it with NX Client from my windows 7.
I have done the basics..
update
upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.
I got this mail back from them:
It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.
Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?
I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..

I could do this under Windows, I have an old copy of W2K server install I got from my networking class... but I'd rather do it via Ubuntu.I know there are automated install options but I can't figure out how to make use of them. After installing the desktop enviroment, I would like to install a VNC server on the VPS, after that I would like to be able to configure the VNC server remotely via SSH and then log in using VNC to connect to that VPS. Is that possible? The reason I wanted to do that is because I want to use their internet connection to browse the web, their speed is like 6 times faster than mine because they have backbone which I can't afford.

Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?

I have been tweaking it and learning the command line and all that, but I also have been reading and studying about different aspects of Debian that I was unaware of before I installed it. Because of my reading, I think that I would like to change my desktop environment. When I installed Debian, I consciously chose the Cinnamon desktop because I felt that the simplicity would suit my needs, but I have recently read about KDE and I think that it has some features that I would be interested in. Is it possible to change my desktop environment now, even though I have already installed Debian? If so, how difficult is it?
On a very closely related question, I do have an extra 60 GB partition just sitting there with nothing on it. As an alternative to the above scenario of changing desktop environments before I know exactly which one I will like better, I can make another installation of Debian on my free partition and run both Cinnamon and KDE side-by-side for a little while until I learn which one suits my needs the best.

I have openSUSE 11.2 installed with KDE4 and what is the proper way to install another desktop/window manager. Installing fluxbox is straight forward with zypper install fluxbox what about gnome and lxde? How will the default application be affected e.g. when I login into KDE, video is defaulted to smplayer If gnome/lxde is installed will the default app change with the desktop environment or will one app be defaulted to all desktop environment?

I will be installing a Ubuntu server in an office where the office manager will need to be able to do simple things like add/remove users, access filesystems, etc. She can handle these tasks in Ubuntu desktop/GUI, but it is impractical for her to have to learn how to use the CLI terminal to do this stuff.
Will I have to install desktop Ubuntu on the server to do this, or can I install Ubuntu server version and setup another computer Ubuntu desktop to remotely login graphically?
