Ubuntu Installation :: Let Non-root Users Install Apps?

Apr 7, 2011

I'm going to set up an Ubuntu computer for my family. They asked for it, I didn't push them. But I know that they don't like passwords.

So my plan is to make an admin account which is in the sudoers group and then make induvidual accounts for the users. But I also want them to be able to install apps.

So I wonder if it is possible to set the computer so that they can use the software center. What is the best method to do this? The apps mustn't be installed system-wide.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update New Install With Apps From A Dying Drive?

Dec 17, 2010

I had an old laptop (POS) with Lucid installed. I was updating to Maverick via Update manager. Well, I had a feeling my HDD was failing but it finally bit the dust on me, and the laptop never booted up properly after the update... I then put together a new laptop with a new drive, I can connect my old drive via USB to the new Lappy, and pull any essential data over to the new system, my question is. How do I import the list of apps I used to run into the new lappy, to have Aptitude or apt pull down and reload everything I "was" using? I figure there is a simple way, just not sure how to do it from a non-running distro via usb connection..

Ubuntu :: Control What Apps Can And Cannot Connect To Internet?

Jul 2, 2011

Using lsof I noticed that everytime I open some apps (like Rhythmbox or Banshee) it connects to the internet over ports 80 and 443. All I'm doing though is surveying my music collection. Why is it connecting to the internet for this? I don't have podcasts or album covers or any of that stuff set. In fact I turned all that stuff off.

the problem is that I only get so much bandwidth on my mobile broadband plan. I don't want apps connecting when I don't need them to. I played around with the UFW but it appears to only allow port configuration. I can't see how to control the connections of applications. I can't block ports 80 and 443 because then I'd shut down the web browser. How do Linux users control the internet connections of installed applications?

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Packages With No Internet / Is It Possible?

Mar 27, 2010

I have a general question: can I install packages in my Ubuntu, just using the live-CD but no network connection?

I broke my Ubuntu(9.10) and now can not log in, so I want to reinstall gnome, unfortunately I could not connect to internet, so I wonder if there is a way to use the live-CD as a source for the new software.

I would be really happy if I don't have to preinstall the whole system.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 New Install No Internet Connectivity / Need That

Oct 5, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual boot with Win/XP, using the text based installer. Installation seems to have completed OK and Ubuntu boots as expected - but Firefox cannot find any web-page.

How do I start look for the problem cause?

I should say that I previously had installed Kubuntu 10.04 (64 -bit). It was installed for a few months up to May 2010, but then it suddenly lost all internet connectivity after I hibernated the system. Win/XP continued to work with no error. Despite some months of help and advice from the Kubuntu forum, I was unsable to solve the problem. Indeed one piece of advice resulted in the overwriting of my Win/XP installation. I have now re-installed Win/Xp and decided to install 32-Bit Ubuntu - but I am back into the 'no internet connection' problem again. Win/XP works fine.

Thus, after the basic installation I wasn't able to install any packages ( trying to install sudo as root prompted me to insert the media disc - the USB drive I used wasn't detected going in an infinite loop ). Judging by the fact that I don't have a window manager installed.

Fedora Installation :: Can't Retrieve Installer Metadata -- Internet Install CD?

Jun 13, 2009

I know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.

The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.

I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:

I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.

All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??

Fedora Installation :: Install Korn Shell Without Internet Access?

Jun 14, 2009

I work for AT&T and our Windows-centric workgroup is being tasked with supporting an app running on RedHat. To help my coworkers, I'm building a Fedora 11 VM that we can play with to familiarize ourselves with the UNIX environment.

Because of corporate network policies in place, my VM can't get access to the Internet.

Since we're AT&T employees, we're naturally using the korn shell on the production system. I'd like to install the korn shell on my VM. However, it doesn't appear to be part of the base fedora repository.

Is the korn shell available for Fedora? If so, how would I copy it to shiny media, mount it on my VM, and install it?
