Debian :: Install The Empathy Instant Messenger That's In Lenny-backports?

Apr 10, 2010

I'm new to Debian, but have used Ubuntu so I'm relatively familiar with APT. Ubuntu doesn't have backports, though, and I can't figure this out. I've checked the documentation for the answer, and I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something simple.

I'm running lenny, and I want to install the Empathy instant messenger that's in lenny-backports (v. 2.26.2-1). I already have the stable package installed, and here's what happens when I try to upgrade:

michael@archimedes:~$ sudo apt-get -t lenny-backports install empathy
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
empathy is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 118 not upgraded.

Debian :: Firefox/Iceweasel Sharing Profiles Between Windows And Lenny?

Oct 30, 2010

I'm trying to shift from Windows to Linux I tried Ubuntu, but I was happy with it, so now I'm trying Debian. I installed the version i386 on an amd64. Since I still have to use XP I would like to share my Mozilla profiles. I followed the instruction I found on the web which worked well for Ubuntu/XP, but now I'm not able to get a working configuration on Debian Every time I launch Firefox/Iceweasel I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." I've tried to fix the problem following the instruction found in [URL] and other websites, but I failed. Firstly I tried with Iceweasel then I installed Firefox, but it didn't make any difference!

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4

Dec 14, 2009

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.

I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.

i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Debian :: Install Adblockplus In Iceweasel?

Jun 22, 2010

I realise this ought to be trivial, but for some reason this installation is not working for me.

1. Install adblock 0.7.5.5-3 from Debian Lenny Synaptic

2. Restart IceWeasel

I expected to see Adblock plus listed in Tools>Add-ons>Extensions, but that page is empty. Also Edit>Preferences>Main>Manage Add-ons shows the same thing.

Browsing the forums I see what looks like lists of Plugins, Add-ons and so on which have been added to iceweasel.

How do I get adblock working? How do I get a printed list of extensions and plugins?

Debian :: Xmarks Doesn't Install In Iceweasel

Dec 9, 2011

It's that simple. 1) through the toolbar, it's not one of the listed extensions.

2) going to xmark's website, and downloading it, it downloads a .xpi file. There is no where to place this file. there was no /usr/lib/mozilla/extensions folder, so i created it, and when adding the .xpi file, iceweasel didn't find it.

putting the stupid thing in /usr/bin/firefox/plugins also didn't work.

iceweasel is crap

Debian Multimedia :: Iceweasel Won't Install On Wheezy 7.8 Sparc

Jan 18, 2015

So the other day I installed Debian Wheezy on my Sun Blade 150. While the OS is installed fine, all the webkit based browsers continuously crash after a few pages. So, I tried to download IceWeasel since it wasn't installed when I tried installing Debain off the DVD. The only problem is, it won't install as the Xulrunner version it requests is xulrunner-24.0_24.5.0esr-1~deb7u1_sparc, however the only version available on the repositories is newer. Is there any way to get the older xulrunner version, or is there going to be a fix for IceWeasel soon on Sparc?

Debian Multimedia :: Iceweasel On Install Won't Follow Some Hyperlinks

May 26, 2011

I'm having some major issues with "Iceweasel" on Debian 6.0.1 (squeeze). I've done some extensive google searching but can't really find anything on this issue.

Basically, Iceweasel simply won't follow some links. It seems to spin for a second and then remain on the same page. I haven't been able to find any correlation between the type/style of links and whether or not the browser will work correctly or not when the link is clicked. Also, sometimes if I have multiple tabs open, I'll open gmail in a new tab and it will do nothing. If I exit the app and restart with one new tab, it will correctly bring up gmail (does this with other sites too gmail is just an example).

I actually use Chrome for most stuff now but need FF/Iceweasel for PHP debugging (a Zend Studio plugin not available in Chrome).

how to get more debug info form Iceweasel

I've thought about just installing Firefox but seems I have to do it manually and I'm not convinced that it would make a difference as supposedly the code is the same (?). I may just try it anyway as I'm out of ideas.

Here's the stats:

peter@sendai[vanilla]$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-31) (ben@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Mon Mar 7 21:35:22 UTC 2011
Iceweasel 3.5.16 (like Firefox 3.5.16)

Debian :: Experiences With Backports?

Nov 29, 2009

I'm running Debian Lenny. I'm not pleased with kde4 so I'm going to be staying with Lenny. But I'm really looking to upgrade the old Openoffice 2.4 to 3.x. I've got the backports entry in my apt sources.list file. And I have downloaded the packages list. I'm just wondering if anyone else has installed the OO.o from backports? Does it work good and does it futz up anything from the stable install?

On a side, does anyone know where to get an updated Kopete. The version in Lenny is old and won't connect to Yahoo chat anymore (I guess they changed the protocol again.

These are really the only two reasons I messed with KDE4 anyhow. Kopete isn't a big deal because i can always use Yahoo messenger online anyhow, but really want to see how OO.o 3.x works.

Debian :: Backports Service Becoming Official?

Sep 7, 2010

The Debian Project is proud to announce that the backports service, previously available at [URL].. is now an official Debian service and will be available from backports.debian.org Backports are packages from the testing distribution recompiled for the current stable (or even oldstable) to provide users of the stable distribution with new versions of some packages, like the Linux kernel, the Iceweasel browser or the OpenOffice.org suite, without sacrificing the general stability of the system.

The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution (how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to configure the backports repository by default without generating errors on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later date, after the release.

Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.

General :: Installing Flash Player 10 With IceWeasel?

Mar 10, 2010

I have barebones Debian Lenny, with bare bones Gnome Desktop. I'm using IceWeasel for a browser. I have downloaded the file install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz. from the Adobe website. I have unpacked (I guess) the file using the command
tar -zxvpf install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz

Now according to the instructions at Adobe - Flash Player 10: Installation instructions
It should be unpacked to a directory with an installer that can be run, but all I get is a single file called libflashplayer.so, and I haven't a clue what to do with it. .so is like a .dll file I guess. IceWeasel has a built in service that installs plugins, but this failed with flash.

I do not have a PDF plugin. Is the PDF Download extension forcing a download rather than display of the PDF in the browser?
