Debian :: Install The Empathy Instant Messenger That's In Lenny-backports?
Apr 10, 2010I'm new to Debian, but have used Ubuntu so I'm relatively familiar with APT. Ubuntu doesn't have backports, though, and I can't figure this out. I've checked the documentation for the answer, and I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something simple.
I'm running lenny, and I want to install the Empathy instant messenger that's in lenny-backports (v. 2.26.2-1). I already have the stable package installed, and here's what happens when I try to upgrade:

May 29, 2011i have been trying to install iceweasel 3.5.16 from lenny-backports , but when i run the commandapt-get -t lenny-backports install iceweaselit just installs iceweasel 3i also tried it with iceweasel=3.5.16 at the end and it just said it cant find 3.5.16, but i know the package is there cos iv seen it on the websiteI have this line at the bottom of my sources.list filedeb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports lenny-backports mainand if it makes any differnence im running lenny on a powerpc computer (well it's actually a wii)

And noticed that since today (or mayby yesterday not entirly shure) the documentation speaks about "squeeze" and not "lenny" I am not sure if any other info is changed as well but i find it confusing. Is this an error?

Apr 28, 2010I have been unlucky searching Google and this site concerning this and hope that someone on here has either done this before or could point me in the right direction. I have a computer on my network that I want to use as a local repository for apt. I've got the set of Debian Lenny 5.04 CD's and would like to know how to put all of the packages from those CD's onto this computer and then use it as a local source for my Debian computers to get packages from. The CD's appear to hold all of the packages in the folder /pool if that helps at all.

Aug 1, 2011I am trying to run "sudo pbuilder create" where it runs debootstrap. Then it says:

I: Checking component main on http://bg.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu. Problem is that this is the old repo I've used. After installing pbuilder and the other dpkg essential packages I've run "sudo pbuilder create", noticed the message of the repo and since I am no longer in Bulgaria, interrupted the script, went to synaptic and changed the repo from there (now is http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu/). Even rebooted. Double-checked in synaptic the repo is still changed, grepped the files in /etc/apt for "bg" and all results were commented. I ran again "sudo pbuilder create" and it still reports the old repo.
So where does debootstrap reads the repo setting from and how to fix it?

Apr 11, 2010I tried to use debdelta for an upgrade, but it only worked with the main debian and security repositories, and did not work with the backports repository (which is where the largest files, specifically openoffice.org, are for my system). Is there a way to set up debdelta to be used with backports? I tried editing the /etc/debdelta/sources.conf file to include it, but this did not work.

Nov 29, 2009I'm running Debian Lenny. I'm not pleased with kde4 so I'm going to be staying with Lenny. But I'm really looking to upgrade the old Openoffice 2.4 to 3.x. I've got the backports entry in my apt sources.list file. And I have downloaded the packages list. I'm just wondering if anyone else has installed the OO.o from backports? Does it work good and does it futz up anything from the stable install?
On a side, does anyone know where to get an updated Kopete. The version in Lenny is old and won't connect to Yahoo chat anymore (I guess they changed the protocol again.
These are really the only two reasons I messed with KDE4 anyhow. Kopete isn't a big deal because i can always use Yahoo messenger online anyhow, but really want to see how OO.o 3.x works.
Debian :: Backports.org 'SID' Style Breakage?
Mar 31, 2010For the 2nd time in a year. I really need v3.xx because 2.4 breaks formatting when opening v3 files. Why did i go back to 2.4 ? 3.1 was slower with calc. Now I'm stuck with 2.4 because of the ongoing stupidity in backports.org.

Sep 22, 2010If I install (say) Iceweasel from Lenny Backports, do I need to un-install the standard Lenny Iceweasel first, or will the new one overwrite/upgrade the old one? And- I understand pinning I think, but nobody explains what the * in the line:Package: * means. Does it mean all packages installed from the release specified in the line Pin: release a=lenny-backportsor do I need to specify each package in it's own entry (in /etc/apt/preferences)?

The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution (how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to configure the backports repository by default without generating errors on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later date, after the release.
Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.

Jul 28, 2011I've been trying to update Fedora 15 for weeks. I always end up with a transaction error and the update stalls. The error reads: GPG keys listed for RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide-free repository are installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key urls are configured for this repository.
This is far too involved for a linux newbie, I think my only option is to reformat and reinstall. This is so frustrating, there are 250 MB of updates available that I can't access.

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Update Everthing From Backports?
Apr 10, 2011While I've been using Debian for various years, I have never actually used Stable. No Stable means no Backports, and I have a doubt about the latter. After reading Backports's documentation and the APT Preferences's manual page, I understand that, as of Squeeze, a backport must be installed manually, and that already installed backports are automatically updated. Also, because Backports archives have a pin-priority of 1, one cannot update all installed packages to the versions available in Backports.
I guess that one could achieve it by giving the Backports archive a pin-priority of 991. However, using the whole Backports repository is discouraged everywhere, and I don't really know why. How serious are these warnings? Does it cause a dependency Hell or is it just a warning for novice users?

General :: Debian Lenny : How To Install Xfce 4.6 Instead Of Lenny's 4.4
Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Nov 4, 2010I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

May 3, 2010I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
