Red Hat / Fedora :: RPM Install Script Fails On Root Change / What To Solve It?
Mar 4, 2011I am working with Rhel 5.5. I am creating rpms and I have an issue. I want to bzip up the file before I make the rpm. Then I want to unzip it at install time. I add the zip up work to the %prep tag and added the unzip to the %prerun tag of the SPEC file. Everything works fine.
Then I install the rpm to a different folder with rpm -i --root /tmp for example and the scripts fail to run because the script can't find /bin/sh.
It makes sense because rpms are dependent on the absolute paths to the file, but I want to know how to still have the scripts run. I tried to put the /bin/sh in the /tmp folder (in the example above) but it still can't find it. And yes i do have /bin/sh on the system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can No Longer Install Windows On My Laptop / Solve This?
Jul 7, 2010Synopsis: I wiped my system and am using ubuntu 10.04 with no problems *except* that I now need IE 8 and MS Excel/Access/Powerpoint/Word for classwork. I kind of tried toying with WINE, but ultimately would rather just have a dual boot.
What occurs when I try a (any) Windows install (keep in mind I even swapped out a fresh Sata HD and the same problem occured:
Pop in a Windows ISO bootable CD>everything acts normal and I follow the prompts for a fresh install (not an upgrade)> It begins the install but the first part where it is "copying files" just goes to 100% in a split second>Then it moves down to the next prompt of "Expanding Files" at which point the laptop is spinning the disc/reading it but it just stays at 0%.
So, it's not a HD formating problem, right? I wiped the system, reformatted and got the okay from Windows that I could install so I assumed I reformatted it back to NTFS.
Ubuntu :: Editing Right Click Menu In 1104 Classic?
May 2, 2011As Unity have too much serious regressions to be usable desktop (I'll list some so maybe somebody could get an idea what to change for Ocelot 1110 edition):desktop switcher is obnoxious for somebody who is used to having 8-12 virtual desktops and to see in system tray what desktop is taken and what desktop is free. I do not see Pidgin icon in system tray anymore. And I hate (not dislike, but hate) Empathy, so I do not want to hear "Install Empathy". Have empathy for users who just want their apps in system tray! Launcher is bugged. I added Synaptic to it, place in launcher was taken, but there was no icon until restart. I added dconf-editor, there was no icon for it also after restart. weather applet is no more part of date/time tray indicator, but you can install it separately. Yes, you can install it separately, but you can not add your location, and that applet is not smart enough to read your old settings of weather and 1-5 locations for time zones should I go further? In short, 1104 is stable but default login (Unity) is not functional. It is better than M$ Vista which was not stable, but I expected that Ubuntu would adhere to higher standards than one shitty commercial company which wants only money of users and therefore rushed non-functional software to market.
My question (finally): In Ubuntu classic items I added to right click menu using nautilus-actions are not there anymore. They are still present in Nautilus, but not in desktop right-click menu. I googled a bit and found zilch, so I ask here. Please share how to do it (scripts folder is still there, but that would be regression to be unable to edit right click menu, FFS Ubuntu is not proprietary software so we would be helpless and could not tweak our favorite OS how we like it).

Jun 1, 2011I have been trying to get video import to work on Xubuntu 1104 for nearly 2 weeks without success. All I am trying to do is to drag video from my Sony Digital 8 Handycam via firewire onto my PC for safekeeping and editing.
- Installed Kino, then found it did not work because of a permissions error. Used gksudo to get around that then found it was giving me a firewire error..raw 1394 kernel not loaded or failure to. Did a load of research and de-blacklisted the ohci drivers. Also installed dvgrab to make sure this aspect worked ok
- Used the list command to determine that the PC could see the firewire card, all OK
- Went back, using gksudo, etc to drag the video files in, same error as before
- Went onto the Kino website [URL].. (seems not to be updated that much) and , again, de blacklisted the firewire drivers
- Went to the Ubuntu website and found this.[URL]...but none of that worked for me.
- Searched through the Ubuntu help forums, not yet found a solution that works for me. Installed Ubuntu studio to see if that worked, no joy. I am now at a complete dead end. I am simply trying to find a piece of software that plugs in, works first time without issues, and allows me to initiate video imports as outlined above. Is anyone able to help me resolve this problem please?
My only other option, if I can't solve this, would be to install a copy of Windows 7 on my machine and use e.g a Pinnacle product to solve the problem. That would be a major failure as I much prefer to do this using my current set-up.
Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen After Update To 1104 / Get GUI Back?
Jun 20, 2011.I am new to Ubuntu. Installed and got 10.10 working fine with wireless network. Tried to update to 11.04. Due to flakey wireless connection I only got a partial update downloaded. Tried to insatll what I had but that didn't finish either. On boot up I had a completely blank screen. Tried restore (multi boot system with WIN98SE Separate partitions) but don't know enough about command line tools to know what to do with what comes up. BTW, WIN98SE comes up fine. If I am understanding what the restore screen shows, it is coming up in TTY1. How do I get the GUI back?

Jun 23, 2011I have rented a server in a datawarehouse to host my mysql databases, subversion repositories, websites etc. I don't have physical access to this server (I don't even know the location of the data warehouse).
I connect over SSH (Putty) to this server.
When I login I get the message that new release "natty" is available (1104). Run "do-release-upgrade" to upgrade to it. I've never done an upgrade, so I'm afraid there has to be a reset during the upgrade process and a manual action on the machine itself to restart it.
Is it possible to do this upgrade without manual intervention, can somebody give me perhaps a pointer to a location of a good "howto"

Aug 18, 2010I have a gateway laptop that I have attempted to dual boot, but the computer only sees the Ubuntu OS and the Vista Windows Recovery Partition. (Actually, gnome reports 3 separate Ubuntu OSs... part of the problem?)

I want reinstall but PC is not reading CD, But the CD drive is working.
I install UBUNTU 11 in other 6 PCs, and work fine.

I never install Windows on this PC. The original OS was UBUNTU 9.04 and updates.

Jan 2, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine, all went well. It found an update straight away for my system and it was the Nvidia driver so I installed. However the bar at the top & bottom of my desktop is Grey and not Black like it should be, I've tried applying the "Ambience theme" again in Appearance Preferences but it just stays the same.

Jan 27, 2010I am really hoping this is an easy fix. Somehow, on my gnome desktop, my panels overlapped one another. I was dragging and dropping files into folders and unintentionally grabbed the smaller bar and dragged it over my larger application bar.Now, when I rebooted, all I see is my desktop. I don't use icons so I have none of those. The panels are completely gray. every once in a while I will see my trash bin flashing. I am unable to right click the desktop and I am unable to use Alt+F2 for my term.I can still use CTRL+ALT+ F1,F2,F3,F4... to get my non GUI terms. I have tried killall gnome-panelstill nothing.
This is a little... odd to me... a simple click renders an entire OS useless. I would really like to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling because that would just be something you would do with a microsoft product.Edit: Everyone in a while I can right click the desktop and I get the provided menu but that does nothing for me. Also, my hard drive is constantly 'thinking' I am assuming it is stuck trying to complete the gnome environment settings... I am not sure. Oh, I have also tried removing gnome-panel and ubuntu-desktop and reinstalling those.

Does anyone have a definite answer yet, as to why firefox randomly freezes up/turns gray and doesn't respond? It seems to be more like after I've had it open for a good length of time. And seemingly when I use the auto scroll.

In windows it is a program called Manycam that allows the user to play it in the background and makes the webcam gray-scale over all. Is there an equivalence to Manycam for Ubuntu?

There was a icon on the left hand bottom corner that I hit on the log in page that took me to a gray blueish screen where there is an "X" in the middle of screen that I can move with my mouse. no matter how many times I reboot I get this screen How do I get back to log-in page or do I start over and re- install?

Ubuntu :: Adobe Reader Invisible Menus - Unreadable Gray Drop Down
Aug 9, 2011I've just scrubbed Windows 7 starter edition and installed Ubuntu 10.10 (netbook?) on an Asus EEE PC 1008HA. When I installed Adobe Reader(9.4.1-1_i486), I do not see any of the menus. It seems to work fine apart from that, but the main reason I want to use it is the "read aloud" functionality. The menus are visible at the top of the screen, "File Edit View Document Window Help" but as soon as I click any of these I just get a grey drop down, with grey writing, so I obviously can't read any of the menus.
I'm happy to use something other than Adobe Reader, but I've tried xpdf (very old) and kpdf (not maintained) and ePDFViewer, but none of these seem to have the "read aloud" functionality. As it happens, currently the read aloud doesn't even work with Adobe Reader, because when I right click and choose Page Display Preferences, all the options for read aloud are greyed out... but I'll probably be able to figure that one out myself if I can get the menus to appear.

I am having an issue where pidgin will become greyed out, and I am unable to use the program after it greys out. This happens fairly fast after I start up pidgin, maybe 2 or 3 minutes. Nov 19, 2010I installed all the necessary packages for the networkmanager-openvpn function to function. The openvpn-connection-setting are successfully imported into the networkmanger via the conf file but the apply button is grayed out, so that actually saving and using the connection isn't possible? Does anyone know, where the problem is? It's a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 after the upgrade from 10.04 sent the networkmanger down the drain.

Jan 17, 2010I've just upgraded to 9.10 and found that the menus in Open Office are unintelligible gray blocks.
Many apps are fine, like Firefox, gimp and thunderbird, but OO is scrogged up. I also noticed that Quanta has unintelligible sub menus although the top level menus are readable. The lists of files in Quanta are gray blocks, but if you click on a folder, the file names appear, then chaneg back to gray blocks if you click the folder again. Tried reinstalling Quanta but no success.
Ubuntu :: Menu Bars Are A Basic Light Gray After Installing Graphics Card Driver
Feb 7, 2011I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.
It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far.
Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place?
